the PAJAMAHIDIN will destroy the network news establishment
As Rather goes, so goes network news James P. Pinkerton
September 21, 2004
These are the final days for Dan Rather. But the story of the fake documents aired on "60 Minutes" is deeper than just one man's fall. It is the story of technology's transition-and that's a tale that will never end.
By any fair reckoning, Rather should resign. As a big shot at CBS News-in addition to being anchorman-in-chief, he has been the managing editor of the CBS Evening News since March 1981-he deserves to be held to the same standard as Howell Raines, the executive editor of The New York Times, who was forced to resign last year in the wake of a news-fabrication scandal.
Some might argue that Rather was just a duped news reader, that he was simply following orders. In which case, following the precedent established in the 1998 "Tailwind" scandal-in which CNN's Peter Arnett was forced to quit after he read phony copy about Americans using poison gas in Laos-Rather should still be forced to take his leave.
But even if he limps along at CBS till the expiration of his contract in 2006, Rather is done for. He will be remembered as a reporter-crusader who went chasing after the Big Story both courageously and recklessly. Whatever the subject - hurricanes, Watergate, Afghanistan, George W. Bush - he was always on a quest. And like Captain Ahab, the obsessive anti-hero of Moby-Dick, Rather had many successes, but then he went harpooning after one too many a whale.
But if whaling provided drama in the 19th century...

RE: the thread title:
Network news is going in the toilet?
I think Pajamarazzi is a much better term.
My thought as well.
One can only hope...
It may fester a while, but increasingly, and obviously, it does not influence people as much any more. It is a victim of changes in technology and blatant bias.
Rather is just one of the elitist media dinosaurs. They are headed for the tar-pits. Rather's arrogance, and CBS's outright refusal to fire him on the spot, just emboldens the arrogance and criminal behavior of the leftist media -- probably part and parcel to their strategy here.
Let us hope, for the sake of this country, and its freedoms, that the media gets CLEANED UP, and returns to its days when it could be respected for objective journalism and trustworthy news. Those days of old are not with us anymore, a not-so-profound statement, I know.
Bye Bye, won't miss ya, don't bother writing.
Imagine what this country & world would be without their lying influence all these years?????
What a shame.
Not by me. More like deceitfully and arrogantly.
At any rate, with technology the news cycle is much too fast for the networks news. By the time their program airs, the day's news has already been rehashed times over.
I couldn't agree more. Network news influence is on the way out having run into the new forces of instant global communcation available over the web. Finally, the "average Joe" no longer is powerless against the bias and outright lies that have been our pablum since the advent of TV network news. Between the growth of cable TV and and the web, the handwriting is on the wall for the networks.
Exactly so. The evening news broadcast belongs in the Smithsonian, right alongside the daily ice truck deliveries and the horse-drawn milk wagon.
What exactly is a 'network' station? Is that one of the channels that shows football/baseball games on Saturday & Sunday? IMO that's all they're good for. Cable & the internet is where I get my news. Gather the story from 10+ different sources, and form my own opinion.
BTW, just put a new bumper sticker on my truck:
"VOTE DEMOCRAT, IT'S EASIER THAN THINKING"
I like your bumper sticker.
I'm with you on the pajama-razzi.........
Rather didnt simply get caught with his pants down. Its far worse for the old boy, Im afraid.
Much like an outtake from Americas Funniest Home Videos, Rather actually tried to run down the street with his pants around his ankles while screaming Fire! Fire!
It ended badly for Dan, as he ended up falling face-first into the pavement, the ass fully exposed.
Someone should plant an American flag.
I like the term: Pajamanistas
Jim Pinkerton gets it.
"BTW, just put a new bumper sticker on my truck:
"VOTE DEMOCRAT, IT'S EASIER THAN THINKING" "
Do you have a pic of the bumper sticker?
Well done.
