"shotgun..." Not an assault rifle. Not so hasty now, if it had a pistol grip on the stock it might have been an "assault shotgun".
To: JennysCool
Fox just mentioned it on their broadcast as well.

I was just in the capitol building last week for a meeting. I stopped and chatted with the guard. I hope it isn't the same guy.

No, that was 'chains on his pants', not 'hand on his pants.'

Update
One shot fired inside captiol with shotgun, one victim, a security guard that was rushed to hospital. Very many police on scene, helmets and all. Suspect fled thru north entrance (there is only 2 entrances to capitol, north and south.) Suspect threw gun in trunk of vehicle and sped off. No indication that there was anyone else in vehicle.

It is purely coincidental that this happened immediatley after Gov. Blagoevitch & Mayor Daley announced that they will try to get a California style weapons ban thru during the veto session

Thank you so much for these updates - it is as though you are there. The photo above of the Capital Building is spectacular.

Yahoo is saying they have no metal detectors at the state capitol and the guards are unarmed. I think that's going to change in a hurry...

Update
Suspect entered in gun shop today WITH shotgun already; shot worker there in the arm. Suspect is white male, age 20, blond hair. Police DO NOT have suspect in custody, repeat DO NOT. Earlier traffic stop of a potential suspect was cleared up. Both shooting incidents MAY BE connected - unknown so far; police say that on Sept. 14th, a shotgun was stolen from the gun shop. Suspect in that crime was in a grey, Honda civic style four door car with a spoiler on back; so far police aren't saying that that is the car involved in today's shootings. Capitol and surrounding gov't buildings are on lockodwn, no one in or out. Condition of victim still unkown. Will update further.

"The shooter is probably a Democrat."
.....as will be the victim if he/she succumbs to their injuries.

See what happens when the Assault Weapons Ban expires? I'm surprised we haven't heard from Diane Feinswine yet.

Last time i was in the capitol office building they had metal detectors & Secretary of State police with the security guards
Anyone the guards knew were supposed to work there went around the detectors though
To: steamboat
It never ceases to amaze me why security guards would be unarmed...especially in these times. What is he supposed to do when facing down an armed intruder? SPITBALLS?
Ya think the suspect would have escaped had the guards been armed? Maybe the incident wouldn't have happened at all?
