'There are a number of serious questions that remain unanswered and they need to be answered,' says White House spokesman Scott McClellan.
'Bill Burkett, who CBS says now was their source, is not an unimpeachable source, as CBS has claimed.'
'There are news reports of Burkett having senior level contact with the Kerry campaign. That raises questions.'
'What were those contacts and what was discussed? Who is the original source of the documents?'
'Who is responsible for forging these documents?

I suppose he must have some good qualties since he's with Mary Matalin! He was such an amoral gunslinger for the Clintons, though...
I am just speculating, of course. But now that I think of it, Begala, like Rather and Burkett, is a Texan...
The pajamahadeen drives Drudge, WorldNetDaily, other News Blogs, & the talk-show lineup.
Drudge, etc. drives the cable news stations/web sites.
The cable news stations drive the johnny-come-lately news packagers (those who take 10-24 hrs. to deliver their filtered news).
And the daily broadcasts/newspapers drive the weekly TV "mag style" programs & monthly news rags.
It's bottoms-up bloggerism usurping the gatekeeper power held close to the chest by erudite Ratherites of the world.
All good points. The more they change, the more they stay the same. I mentioned something about John Dean being on Kerry's side in another post. What are the odds?
"Now that there's blood in the water, they'll probaby stay on it.
No, I agree with the earlier post. The Times doesn't want to get its prissy little hands dirty on this story. The Washington Post - especially Michael Dobbs is beating them by miles.
The Times keeps beating the Abu Ghraib story because they want desperately to get more Pulizers than last year. They aren't really doing it for the readers.
It would certainly be an ironic twist in this if they paid for the documents with counterfeit bills. :)
It's RatherNomics!
I have heard that Cleland is searching for his family tree.
He found out it was a stump.
Sorry for this tasteless cynicism. I just couldn't help it.
The first opportunity for that joke.
CBS had the docs long before Carville joined Kerry's campaign.
Nice summation. It's sure heading that way, and Dan's helped to speed things up.
Oh, sure the print investigator journalists will eventually kick in. Oh, I'd give 'em about 6 weeks to uncover the relative truth. We should see the mass expose' in the two coastal Times, the WA Post, & USA Today appear in the Nov. 3 edition.
What was the name of the organization who's chairman spoke out on Burkett's behalf? It was Progressive something. I think that organization is more than just posters at a yahoo loop, but I don't know. I think someone needs to look into the membership of that organization. For all we know, Dan could also be a member.
Bingo, it wouldn't surprise me if Bagman Bagala and the Junkyard Dog Carville hired inept ops to blow this thing.
I don't believe the source "burned him". I think he knew exactly what was going on.
I also think the person he is covering for is part of the Kerry campaign - because he desperately wants Kerry to win.
If the Whitehouse folks had any backbone, they could use the Justice department to prosecute the person who forged official government documents, impersonated an officer, and distributed forged documents. After all, Martha Stewart went to prison because one government individual said that she lied to him. This seems like a greater crime to me. But then, we do not want to offend the DemocRATs, do we?
I've got a question...been listening and reading all morning. Remember Hillery had all those files brought over to the WH from the FBI. I remember hearing that all top GOP were in the heist. What was the name of the guy who was in charge of security at that time? He has kind of disappeared since then. Could this be a connection?
If you ever get ahold of them, ask them about someone at national telling a concerned citizen "Bush got what he deserved".
It's definitely ratchet-this-up time now. I am at work, but there is a big screen on the wall with the msnbc feed. They have been on Rathergate related interviews and reporting continuously for the last 3 hours, with no signs of stopping.
Go to the affiliates website and contact someone remotely connected to the news, like the weather person or the business manager. Someone other than the station manager. They do not get that much mail and will reply to you.
And if you message is concise, to the point and polite, it will be printed and given to the GM. It is not only the employees at CBS News that are concerned over this issue. Ratings make a big difference in the lives of employees at the affiliates. Christmas bonuses are on the line.
