BOSTON - Democrat John Kerry (news - web sites) reminded his hometown supporters at a $3 million fund-raiser Saturday night that he's come from behind to win elections before.
"Let me tell you something, these folks have got me in fighting mood," Kerry said of rival President Bush (news - web sites)'s campaign. "When I get in a fighting mood towards the end of September and towards the beginning of October, I think you know what happens here in Massachusetts."
The crowd of donors, which included Democrats from the state's congressional delegation and other statewide elected officials, rose to its feet cheering, with several people pumping their fists in the air boxer-style.
Bush opened a lead over Kerry in polls taken after the Republican National Convention earlier this month, but some recent surveys show the race tightening again.
Kerry has had several close races before in his home state, dating back to his slim victory in the 1982 primary for lieutenant governor up to a come-from-behind win against Republican William Weld in 1996.
"I feel those October juices flowing," Kerry said. "And I've been at this for a while and when those juices get flowing, I feel good. Let me tell you, we feel it happening."
Bruce Percelay, a national vice chairman of Kerry's campaign, told the crowd they raised $3 million for the Democratic National Committee (news - web sites)'s presidential campaign fund. The campaign said the donations came from 1,200 people.
Also on Saturday, Kerry and his wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry, taped a 30-minute segment for the "Dr. Phil" show at Boston's Four Seasons hotel. The show, which also features Dr. Phil McGraw and his wife, Robin, was on parenting and is scheduled to air Oct. 6.
There was no studio audience and the taping was closed to the press. Kerry promoted the show at his fund-raiser.
"It was fun to be with a prominent Texan who tells the truth," he joked.
President Bush and his wife have also taped a segment, set to air Sept. 29, according to the Kerry campaign.

We've heard it all before.
"Bring IT ON!" "Bring IT ON!"
Then Kerry the crybaby had his lawyers suing TV and publishers of "Unfit for Command" to shut up the Swifties.
What a bag of wind this guy is.

No! not Kerry with his juices flowing!
His face looks more like Pokey!
Why aren't the Johns groping each other any more?
TRex Heinz won't let the two be together anymore. She wants to be the man in Kerry's life.
Maybe John Jr. didn't care to be with a man whose hips measured greater than his shoulders.
I swear that Kerry sounds more like Barney Fife every day except Barney didn't have the weak voice of a 90 year old. What will kerry sound like in October?
He's ready to fight. How many purple hearts will we need to give him this time to get him to go home?
I think Senator Kerry is finding out that the rest of the country isn't like Massachusetts, and liberals like him are not acceptable outside of New England.
Haven't we heard this before? "Bring it on!" followed a short while later by "Make it stop!"
He's certainly build like Barney Fife except a foot taller.
Same weight though. LOL
I'm just waiting for the final sign that it's over -- the liberal media will start discussing and analyzing the Dems' options in '08.
Hate to pick on people for their looks, but these two are truly scary looking! Is he running to be president of the Munsters House?
"I'm John Kerry, and I'm reporting for duty!"
WAH! I wanna go home now...!
Stunning, isn't it?
And now he's going to drive is own (already high and rising) negatives up by going (even more) negative on Bush. The sheer stupidity of this creature boggles the mind. Can't he see that anti-Bush attacks reached saturation level months ago? Anyone who will be moved by them already has been. It's not even a matter of diminishing returns; it's negative returns. He's hurting himself without putting a glove on Bush.
It's like watching a boxer stand in the middle of the ring and repeatedly punch himself in the face. It's funny at first, but quickly becomes bizarre and disturbing.
What does Kerry rely upon when his juices get flowing? Depends.
