Dan Rather's Main "Memogate" Source Admits He Has Been Certified As Mentally Ill and Hospitalized!
NY Times and others | 12 Feb 04

Exerpt: NYT article on Bill Burkett;

"In it, (a letter) Mr. Burkett complained of "severe retaliation" from General James for what he said was reporting "illegal acts" within the National Guard. He also complained about the government's failure to pay for his medical care after suffering from a tropical disease after a military assignment to Panama in 1997. Before finally winning medical benefits in July 1998, he said, he suffered a nervous breakdown and was hospitalized for depression."

But after helping managed the Camp Pendleton “transient platoon” for a few months after graduation, I think waiting there for many weeks in harsh conditions to process out is as bad as boot camp. Worse considering they’re reminded every minute that they’re washouts.

Putting 2 and 2 together, I now think I understand why Dan Rather Hates the Military and America his fixation on Clinton (the only President that I know of that loathed the Military)

Dan Ratherstupid opened Bush's file drawer and found a forgery to rival the Hitler Diaries. A bigger screwup than Geraldo opening Capone's vault on lie television.

What I think is unfair is that Burkett clearly has had mental health problems that are well known and the Democrats, CBS, and probably the Kerry Campaign had to also know this but they were still willing to exploit the man's illness to fuel their dirty agenda.

>I don't think your title is established by your evidence. A person can check in at such a hospital voluntarily without meeting that standard:

Actually, No.

To be hospitalized, one must have a disease. The criteria for hospitalization for mental disease is that one must have a significantly altered thought process and be a danger to oneself or others. Mental illness "nervous breakdown" hospitalization is not simply for a "rest," it is to treat a disease of mental, not physical illness. That requires physician's certification as described above, regardless if the hospitalization is voluntary of not.

In addition, admission to a mental hospital has long term ramifications. In some states, one must be "certified" as sane again before they can vote. If you have ever bought a firearm at a gun shop, you know about the "mental" question on the federal yellow form.

For those reasons, the findings of serious thought problems and danger need to be there, voluntary or forced hospitalization.

Re "hospitalization"....

You forgot the criterion that diagnosis of 72 hours is considered for all admissions.

If no serious disease is found then your rules apply no?

John "V" Kerry-Kohn has just as much mental stability as his father Richard Kerry-Kohn and his grandpa Fritz Kohn.

Mental illness is always an interesting discussion. I would remind you of a Fort Worth Star Telegram article dated today, Sept 18. According to the article .. .

Burkett said in the lawsuit that the disease and the delay in treating it "ravaged his body dreadfully," leaving him a "shadow of his former self."
The lawsuit also said Burkett had since "suffered a severe nervous breakdown, causing severe mental, emotional and neurological injury, from which plaintiff continues and will continue to suffer."

I will not argue with his assessment of his own condition. Here is the link.
