Self | 17 Sep 2004 | Commish

Posted on 09/17/2004 7:04:29 AM PDT by commish

Since we have had numerous FREEPERS in the area effected by Hurrican Ivan, I thought it would be good to start a thread for FREEPERS to check in.

Please place any damage reports, requests for assistance, etc here.

Cleaned up my yard this morning... got the baby Pine tree replanted, hopefully it will survive. Had to chop down the other tree though .. it was cracked about 6 inches above the ground ..not salvagable. So I spent a couple hours cutting it up. :-(

Other than that , put the wifes yard pretties back out, got the grill set back up, hoses out etc etc etc .... luckily my yard is ant free, no bites for me.

yes but unfortunately the cleaning may have taken my collection of depression glass, various antiques and the cedar chest given to my mom on her 16th birthday then past to me with it! But alas a man's life does not consist of his possessions :) ....(yet a man's memories sure are wrap around them)... a bit sad but very blessed!

My grandkids in Pensacola rode out the storm and came through unscathed, Thank God.

The boy stayed at the downtown Winn-Dixie with many other employees. The wind was terrifying. They could hear part of the roof go, and then huge airconditioning units hurtling to the ground. All were safe, but there was major damage to their vehicles in the parking lot. Today, he and the others are working on cleanup to try to get the place up and running. No electricity is a big problem.

Daughter stayed at a co-worker's home which was more substantial than her trailer home. It was scary. They could hear trees coming down all around. No one was injured, though. However, granddaughter's vehicle had all windows blown out.

We are all very grateful for the prayers of those on FR. My grandkids will tell their grandkids how they survived Hurricane Ivan.

Does anyone know how we can make a donation? I am hesitant to donate to the Red Cross...I'm looking for a local organization so I know my donation will get to the people who need it. Any ideas?

We're in New Orleans and we love the Gulf Shores/Pensacola area. It has been hard to look at the pictures of what happened there. We'd love to be able to do something to help.

Well, thank you very much!

We've been pleased to host our visitors, truly.

The local power co has done a splendid job keeping power on to Hotel Row.

Kudos to the cable company in keeping them connected for news reports on their areas.

It hasn't been easy, as we've had our own problems. This area is not set up to having inland hurricanes. :)

Keep us in mind in you are ever in need. Just remember to book early if you want a room. :)

Dauphin Island remains! YEA!

It's damaged. The reports of the homes on the West End of the Island remind me of after Hurricane Georges. The Parkway was damaged but is passable. The bridge is intact. Whew.

It could have been MUCH worse.

Oh, power is out, phones are out, cell phone use is almost non-existant. They got through to me by going to the Public Beach area.

I'm not sure about the Island airport. More on that later.

Living will be primative for some time, imo.

Heartbreaking video. MY heart goes out to the tens of thousands who have lost everything.

Amazingly enough, Ft. Walton Beach has telephone service. Nothing else, but the phones are working ;-)

I live in Hoover - same thing as Birmingham. I was lucky and never lost my power although my apartment did leak a little.

In my office this morning, 4 of 6 had power OUT at home. Since then, 3 have had their power come back on with only one customer (living in Mountain Brook) still without service.

Traffic lights out on parts of 280 which was NO FUN coming to work this morning. Northbound 31 is closed due to a mudslide on Shades Mountain near the exit to Brookwood Hospital. They are working on it today but no statement as to when it will re-open.

One apartment complex at the intersection of Green Springs and Lakeshore had to be evacuated yesterday afternoon due to flash flooding. Also at least one guy was rescued from his pick-up truck caught in a flash flood in North Birmingham. (The local ABC affiliate kept the cameras on this guy and we as the flood waters rose and the boat arrive to rescue him.

About 300 residences in Eastlake were evacuated last night in case the dam at East Lake overflowed, but it didn't and they all went home this morning. No fatalities. Praise God!

I heard one volunteer fireman in Adamsville died when a tree fell on his truck. Prayers to his family.

Just returned to Destin from evacuation to Tallahassee. Some damage at the beach, especially beach erosion, but minimal damage to buildings.

We had no property damage; some branches broken, trees OK.

We have power, water, telephone, electricity, cable and computer.

Some gas stations are open and people are on line, but line looked to be about 20 cars or less.

Called the water company and was told to boil water for drinking and cooking, just to be on the safe side, although they were unaware of any problems. It's OK to take showers and do laundry.

Haven't read the thread yet -- will do so now.

We're all fine in the Southack household.

Also, President Bush will be here in Alabama (and Florida) touring the damage and offering additional federal aid on Sunday. Some of you may want to extend church invitations to the White House and visiting group, hint, hint...

I think everything is ok down there for the most part...no lives lost... i am sure their power is still out. I think Shell Belt Road got hammered a bit....Mobile county lucked out....BTW...some of the shrimpers stayed on their boats in the Bayou...not sure if that is bravery or maybe just a screw loose ;)

This is just out of curiousity, as I just vacationed in Destin, FL, last week in August. Does anyone know if there was any significant damage there? I heard the the northeast quadrant (which would include FWB-Destin), received the brunt of the storm.

Please see post #74.

Did not sustain any damage where I live. I live in Louisiana near Lafayette. However, I work offshore on an oil platform that took a direct hit (eyewall). We have no word yet on the status of the platform. The company is conducting thorough inspections before restaffing facilities. We had several floating drilling rigs that broke anchor moorings and went adrift. Three production platforms are reported missing so far. Oil companies are assessing further damage today. Does anyonme know of any other platforms damaged besides the ones for Noble Energy?
