All I heard from Teflon Dan (think Steely Dan in the book Naked Lunch) was arrogance at being challenged as a journalist, I saw no real sign of admission.
I couldn't find any reference to that in the version on CBS' web site. Can anyone confirm such a mention (which I think would prove senility more than malfeasance on Knox' part.) If so, the fact that Killian died in 1984, while Bush was elected Governor on November 8, 1994, would prove one or the other. (Were they really talking about Bush for Governor by 1984? Also, I think Knox retired in 1979.)
I'm really hoping that my wife was wrong; something that obviously wrong would have had to be edited out of the interview, to do otherwise would be just plain stupid.
Gary Killian said he had known Knox since he was 6 years old. He also said she was not his father's assistant, but she was a typist from the typing pool that all the officers used.
If find this exchange interesting:
Rather asks her if Bush got in on the basis of preference, her unchallenged response is "I am going to say that he did. I feel that he did." How in the world would she know the reasons he got into the Guard in Texas four years earlier? She was in Alabama at the end of his service.
John Connally's son, both of Lloyd Bensen's sons, H.L. Hunt's grandson, and Bobby Sakowitz are the names that keep popping up, but that's just W's unit.
This one's interesting because Killian died in 1984. Bush became governor of Texas in 1994, ten years later. Hmmmmm...
"DAN RATHER received preferential treatment to get into the National MEDIA and once accepted, failed to satisfy the requirements of his service."
Send it to Michael Dobbs of the Washington Post. I really believe he is being an investigative journalist on this issue. He has failed on the SWIFTboat vets issues, but he seems to be pushing this one. I'm not saying he is on our side, just that he seems to be hitting this one hard, regardless of his political leanings. I could be wrong, but that's what I see right now.
I would have preferred something more concrete and definitive...something more like, "Did you type documents like these with George W. Bush's name on them? And, if so, where do you think those documents are right now?"
I didn't see or hear that. And the fact that this woman has been all over the place-"I knew Bush." "I didn't know Bush". etc.-calls out for a "newsman" like Dan Rather to "nail it down" much like he did with the Coast Guard spokesman during John-John's plane crash that told him, "Howard Stern thinks you're a dick!"
How does a secretary, at battalion headquarters, know of the personal interactions between junior officers? The other pilots were resentful of LT Bush? How in the world would she know that? I was in the Army for 4.5 years, and from my experience, junior officers don't hang out at battalion headquarters for the clerks to even know who they are.
LOL! When this story first broke, Geraldine Ferarro was on some talking head show. Her argument was:
* The charges against Bush are absolutely true because when she was a Congressperson, she used to pull strings for wealthy people all the time.
* These charges are outrageous and prove that George W. Bush is Unfit To Command.
I'm suspicious too. I also wonder how much CBS may have paid Mrs. Knox to do Wednesday's interview. Her gossipy story seems to fit CBS's new focus, which is proving how "accurate" the documents are rather than if they are authentic.
However, only last week Mrs. Knox said she didn't pay much attention to Bush...now she has a definative impression that Bush's attitude reflected arrogance and that he refused Killian's order to take a flight physical. This just happens to coincide with the latest DNC attack ad that includes the song with the lyrics, ..."it aint me, it ain't me, I'm no Senator's son!"... It's another classic case of class warfare, which is a typical strategy of shallow minded liberals. That way they can shore up their main base, the gulible, the ignorant, and the poor.
