Hurricane Ivan appears to be strengthening and heading towards the metro area, the 34th biggest city in the USA which now under curfew.
Police will track down stragglers and take them to jail.
Folks with special needs may go to the Louisiana Superdome.
There will be a mayoral press conference shortly.
I read a press report today that states there are NO SHELTERS anywhere in metro New Orleans that can withstand a direct hit from a Category 4 hurricane. There could be as many as 10,000 casualties as a result.
Given their location, vulnerability, likelihood of getting hit, etc...this is inexcusable incompetence of the highest order! Absolutely shocking! Local officials who have never prepared for such an event need to be hauled up the yardarm!
That's what decade after decade of one-party local Democrat rule will get you, I guess!
Hahahahaha.
Nah, I'm sure the gun shops are packed. NOLA is a tough town.
Mayor now busing folks from schools to the Lousiana Superdome.
Not to worry. The good folks of the Big Easy are well armed. My friend who is walking distance from me has a walk-in vault with enough weapons and ammo to defend our subdivision at the least. There won't be a any shenanigans around here. The police will spend most of there time protecting the poorer black sections of town, who are the ones most effected by the gun Nazis' laws. May the good Lord have mercy on them.
Check this out. Buoy data from near Ivan in the gulf shows 42 ft waves.

This is awful.
Are there any estimates on how much it will take to repair the damage from Ivan to New Orleans? 1 billion? 5 billion? More?
I hope everything comes out ok. Isn't the 9th Ward the ghetto in NOLA? That's the toughest place in a tough town.
I'm sure the Sheriff in Metarie is prepared to deal with any eventuality. I would be nervous right now if I lived in one of those big houses on St. Charles Street.</p>
Red Cross refusing to serve any location more than a 2 hurricane below sea level.
Don't worry about New Orleans ... with all the wannabe news reporters vying to get their picture taken with the hurricane they'll have a natural windbreak.
Shouldn't personal attacks be delivered in person rath th than behind someones back?
St. Charles street floods during the Spring showers. They are going to be in trouble no matter what. Plus they have all the oak trees that fall on property and obstruct the thruways.
I'm less than a mile from the location that they are showing on Fox. Although it looks bad, this subdivision never floods. But if the lake ever crested and the levee broke, 10-15' of water in the neighborhood would be probable.
Most of the people here know that and those in ground floor only dwellings leave. I'm in a brick two story house and always ride these things out. Mostly for the sake of some of the old folks in the neighborhood who can't or won't leave.
Sheriff Harry Lee of Metairie is a competent man with a reputation for doing the right thing and taking the flack from the liberal pansies later. :)
The 9th ward is a tough place. Wouldn't be caught dead there at night. But is is around the housing projects that one most be most careful. The drug dealers own those places.
Even though we have a soccer Mom for Gov, this is still a man's town.
I'm praying that this storm will turn as expected. Your prayers would be appreciated.
That said, I love New Orleans as much as any city in the World but Patton is right on Target.
The City is corrupt, it is dirty, racist, the poverty rate is high, the educational system horrible, the people lazy and the economy not unlike the darkest hole in Latin America.
But, yes I love the city for its beauty, food, culture and way of life. I miss living there but much prefer to live in Texas where at least the economy is good and the educational system better.
I was up all night last night watching this storm and speaking to family who are fleeing the city, I expect to be up all night tonight watching this storm and very likely will be on my way to NOLA on Friday.
A great deal of the Charm as well as dread of New Orleans is its Third World Mentality and I pray that it does not receive a direct hit.
I say this not because of my family and property there but because it is the only major city that can be wiped off the map by a Big Storm and this is a Big Storm.
Why don't you take the time to view my postings.
Great post Patton!
Good luck riding out that storm it looks like it is going east of you. Damn, I hope so.
But, it it hits there may your higher be with you out there in JP. I might consider riding out that storm in our house uptown but now way would I do it in many parts of JP.
Oh, I am praying for you. My sister used to live in Metarie. One day, her and my brother in law (they had a first floor apt.) were in bed sleeping, she was woken up by noise and saw a little thug at the window. By BIL, ran outside chasing the guy with a bat (good for them, the guy didn't have a gun.) And Harry Lee's boys got there in the speed of light.
The guy was never caught, my BIL now has a gun and my sister (who used to be a liberal) has nothing but nicew things to say about Harry Lee. Now my sis and BIL live in a big home on the West Coast of Fla (they still love NOLA and Metarie) and they have a baby and will be voting for GWB in November.
My sis voted for Gore in 2000. So when the lame a$$ Lefties say that no Gore voters are going to vote for GWB, they are full of crap.
Also we got my mom (a lifetime non-voter who also lives in Fla to register as a Republican, she voted for Martinez in the Primary) and she will be voting for GWB-- so that's two voters in FLA who didn't vote for GWB in 2000 who will be, and that's just in my family.
The two of you should have a good time together insulting New Orleanians on what could possibly be the verge of a catastrophe. Have you no shame?
I'll leave the two of you to your fun. I have good people to protect and property to secure and no more time here to waste with the likes of the two of you.
I hope that when the day comes that you are facing great peril, that you are shown more compassion than you have shown here.
What a cool link. I see the streets are already quite wet.
Maybe the word "cool" wasn't appropriate here. I'm just old enough to still be amazed at the technology.
Predictablty? Cowinkidink? Nah ;o) Prophetically!
