A newbie here, not sure if this is the right place for this question - please feel free to advise.
I'm a minority (a conservative 8th grade US History teacher in CA)
My classroom is full of patriotic/government stuff like most US History classroom, and at last night's open house a board member voiced his displeasure w/ my administrator over a Bush/Cheney Farm and Ranch Team sign that hangs in my classroom (it is from the 2000 election). My administrator tells me I have to take it down because I refuse to put up a democrat sign. It's the same board member that refuses to salute the flag at Board Meetings. Thinking of replacing the sign with a life size cut out of George W. or at least a large poster if I can find one. I'm sure that it's still ok to pay tribute to our commander in chief in a US History classroom. Any ideas?
I have the perfect solution. Put up a picture of George Washington and underneath write GEORGE W. :-D
you could put up a more official presidential picture of Bush, one that is not from a campaign...then they really cant say anything
Your administrator is right about the campaign paraphenalia. You should not have more Bush than Kerry (or vice versa). It is not your place to encourage kids to become Republicans.
So many of us were taught propaganda instead of plain US history and political science. Keep up the good work
If you walk into a usda gov't office, you will see a picture of the commander in chief.........had to look at clinton's when it was there but more fun now with GW.
I don't know about this one...is this the battle you want to die at? Sounds like you're going to be up against a lot of crap for this Board. Save your energy for the big stuff.

I was lucky enough to have a US History teacher in 8th Grade who actually taught us what the US Constitution was - and how significant a document it was.
Keep up the good work. Put up President Bush's official White House portrait in your class in lieu of the campaign literature and there can be no argument from above.

Put up a picture of President Bush. Then to be more than fair and balanced, put up two pictures of democrats. Al Gore's and Howard Dean's finest shriek pics, with hate twisted contorted faces, bulging eyes and pulsating swollen veins near bursting point.
I've heard of a California teacher who has a huge Ronald Reagan poster in his classroom. No different from having a historical George Washington or Abraham Lincoln poster.
I'd get the Reagan poster for historical points, and then put the Bush/Cheney posters back up after the election. Looks like they are trying to intimidate you, and it isn't worth it. Your union probably won't back you.
Just add a sign next to it that says, "Gays for George Bush", that will even it out! They won't dare complain about that! :)
I do think you should be even, but if the sign is from a 2000 campaign then all you are required to match it with is a Gore sign. Anyway, the picture of the President is a good idea. I admire everything you stand for, and I can remember a very one-sided history teacher I had in the 7th grade. She made a bulletin board promoting the ERA Amendment. She was a big-time feminist. Nevertheless, it is good to be fair and balance becuase it teaches the kids to think for themselves. Of course, we are only talking about political signs. History is history, and truth is the only route to take on that. Part of history is the story of controversies and how they played out, but "fairness" to the left always means distorting the truth of history.

My advice, no political stuff just stick to history.

If you stick with the political signs, going with a Gore sign for balance, and you still get complaints, remind them that you are a HISTORY teacher, not a current events teacher. The 2000 election is history, the current 2004 election would fall under current events.

My old history teacher, who only lives down the street from me, flew a United Nations flag outside his house after we were attacked on 9/11. No American flag, just the UN flag. It's still there, although I think it's a new one. < \sigh >
