it's very hard to understand how they can justify it. They don't have to.

Apparently what CBS will say is "We have 2 other experts who say the memos are real. After what happened to our last set of experts, however, we are not going to tell you who these experts are."
To: babaloo
Well, they can try that line, but they aren't a court of law. That only works if they turn the investigation over to state or federal prosecutors.
My guess....they would turn it over to Eliot Spitzer, who would manage to delay it.
This is why it needs to go to a Congressional investigation.

All this is about is trumping up charges and putting the target under suspicion and on the defensive. Congressman Cox is calling for Congressional hearings on the matter. I'd say CBS got the defensive reaction it was looking for.

still funny though.......

If you ever believed CBS & Dan Rather on anything, why would you believe them now? And, they have no one to blame but themselves...their cred has been lacking for years.

There is only ONE thing that CBS could do right now to save it's reputation.
Replace Dan Rather in the CBS Evening News anchor chair...
...with Bernie Goldberg.

Yeah, I'd love it...thanks.

If that's their tack, then why make an announcement this morning? Maintaining status quo on their part would mean shutting up and waiting for Ivan to dominate the news cycle...

Nothing CBS can say will stop what others do but this buys them some time to get their ducks in a row before the litigation commences. They need to figure out the extent of the damage that has been done to their news division and the network as a whole. This can be done while the internal investigation runs its course--it gives them some cover. Meanwhile the sharks are smelling blood in the water.

My prediction: "We stand by the information on Bush's guard service, but in order to protect our source, CBS retyped the memos."Can't. USA Today got documents with the same typing.
Congressman Christopher Cox Requests Congressional Hearing on CBS Memogate
excerpt:
USA Today possesses the same documents, obtained independently from a person representing them to be authentic, and likewise is refusing to disclose his identity.

Oh, but Karl DID fax the documents. - I have proof:
FACS COVER SHEET
From
CARL ROVE
CBS News
Attn: Mary Mapes
New York City, NY.
Dear Mary,
Here is a copy of three memos that someone gave someone else after they got it from someone else.
You mite think it is neat-o and you could, like, maybe use it in a story about President Bushs service in the Texas National Air Guard Unit.
Thank you for letting me leak this to you.
Sincerely,
Carl Rove at the White House

Sounds like a conspiracy -- there may have been too many people involved to keep it quiet. Please, God.

I'd like CBS to hang on to him until the election. Seeing a live psychotic meltdown and televised suicide (figurative of course)would be real fun.
