SOURCE: CBS GETTING DESPERATE
National Review Online ^ | 9/14/04 | Jim Geraghty

Posted on 09/14/2004 1:39:08 PM PDT by trentk

So. What is the most absolutely desperate move CBS could make in an attempt to defend its now widely-discredited memos?

How about accusing the forensic document examiners that doubt the veracity of the memos of being agents of the Republican Party?

Just heard from a very reliable source that CBS is looking into the political donations of document examiner Sandra Ramsey Lines, fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, who assessed the memos for CNN and for the Associated Press.

Did some digging myself, and found in a database maintained by the Center for Public Integrity, a campaign finance watchdog group, Lines has donated a little under $600 to the WISH List, a fundraising organization for Republican women candidates.

Ah. Well, she must be lying, then. (eye roll)

(Keep in mind that Ben Barnes, the central figure in Rather’s report, has raised more than a half million dollars for Kerry’s campaign.)

All of the document examiners consulted by the mainstream media who say the documents look like fakes are putting their partisan allegiance to the GOP over their professionalism? Every last one of them?

I had heard, from some folks claiming to be in the know, that some producers at CBS had gone... a little over the edge as a result of this story, quoting Michael Moore at length and putting tremendous faith in the most far-fetched of conspiracy theories. I had dismissed these reports as exaggerations. I mean, network news producers don't just go nuts.

In light of this... maybe they do.

If they had spent HALF as much effort into investigating the memos as they're spending looking into the experts from the other networks, then maybe CBS wouldn't BE in the mess it is, today.

Well, that's that.

Between that and misleading experts, and exaggerating
the conclusions of others, CBS is never going to be
able to hire another expert for anything ever again.

Suicide Journalism indeed.

CBS really is out of touch. WTF are they doing donating to Walter Mondale in 2002? Didn't they get the news yet?

So is CBS now getting into the "investigative journalism" business?

I wish they'd done all this research on the memos, their sources, etc. BEFORE they had to dig up dirt on the forensic exminers.

I'm starting to think there was no "source". The actions of a news department of a big time corporation(Viacom), can have devastating results for the over all company. This is going to get very interesting before it's over. Watch for signs of $$$$$ having influence about how to recover face.
As soon as Viacom share holders start moving shares...it will be the beginning of the end.

Congressman Billybob (freeper here) posted that most of the information that was wrong was a result of personal information that the Dukakis staffer kerry recently hired would have been most likely to get wrong. (excuse run on) IOW The errors are traceable back to Kamp Kerry.

Notice that Robin Rather appears on the above list as CEO of Mind Wave Research.

But, she doesn't appear listed on Mind Wave's corporate board...

MindWave Research's Company Bios

Jonathan Hilland is shown as the CEO.

I did notice that the Mind Wave listed that show Robin Rather as CEO has a space between "Mind" and "Wave". The name on the web site is all together. This company is located in Austin, TX with a ZIP code of "78701", not "78704". The other googled items don't show any thing similar in Texas to any close ZIP.

Looks like this would be Danny's daughter's place of business.

That is, of course, unless she is no longer working there (as it seems), but is working somewhere else. You know...maybe campaigning with someone running for office? Who knows?

Do note that I seemed to do more investigating in about 10 minutes than Danny's whole production team did in 6 weeks. I have even opened the possibility and included in my analysis that the Mind Wave Research referred to in his daughter's own political contributions might not be the same Mindwave Research I found...even though it is in Austin, TX at a very similar ZIP code.

Also, do you find it curious that Robin Rather works a a company that is almost exclusively devoted to "Public Opinion Polling"?

Note: Reported company revenues are from $1 to $2.5 million, so I don't think they are doing major, major jobs, but so you know...

Democrats will stop at nothing to steal an election.

That's the lesson everyone should be learning from this...

they "just have to win."

This is encouraging to see. As factions of the Democrats behave like this, it's a sign of disarray. It's clear Rather and CBS are forced to try to save their own hide at long odds, against the interests of the larger movement (like a stock market crash). The movement would rather they eat a little crow and cut the losses, but they can't enforce it.

This is a symptom of the decay and lack of leadership of the Dem movement. The Clintons may think they have control of the situation, but their vehicle is careening at the moment.

There's an interesting auction right now on eBay for an item which might solve some of CBS's problems in the future:

If they are going to check Lines' donations, we should check their man Matley's.
