The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Muslim group takes responsibility for 9-11: 'We are so sorry'

This September 11 marks the third unforgettable anniversary of the worst mass murder in American history.

After September 11, many in the Muslim world chose denial and hallucination rather than face up to the sad fact that Muslims perpetrated the 9-11 terrorist acts and that we have an enormous problem with extremism and support for terrorism. Many Muslims, including religious leaders, and "intellectuals" blamed 9-11 on a Jewish conspiracy and went as far as fabricating a tale that 4000 Jews did not show up for work in the World Trade Center on 9-11. Yet others blamed 9-11 on an American right wing conspiracy or the U.S. Government which allegedly wanted an excuse to invade Iraq and "steal" Iraqi oil.

It must be pointed out that many mosques and Islamist institutions in the US openly solicit funds and recruit fighters for Jihad in Chechnya.

The Jihad in Chechyna logo below came from a URL which had been on the website of the Islamic Center of Boca Raton, Florida, before their website 'dissapeared' as a result of media scrutiny into the terrorist links on their website .

In 2000, Tayabb Yunus, the head of the Muslim Youth wing of
two of the largest Islamist organisations in North America -
The Islamic Circle of North America and the Muslim American
Society called for parents to send their children to train at madrassas (fundamentalist Islamic schools) and send their children to fight Jihad in Chechyna. For nore on the ICNA and MAS see: http://web.archive.org/web/20010801152634/http://web.archive.org/web/

"North Korea: Two signs of explosions, on the night of 09/08, and the early morning of 09/09"

As JP noted, what little we may know about the series of events indicates two separate explosions hours apart. That could be explained by an explosion at a possible missile facility (some reports indicate it was actually several km away from that specific site), a subsequent fire, then another explosion.

However, two separate incidents do not make it more likely that it was accidental. It makes it less likely (even though it can still be logically explained by the initial blast, fire, and subsequent blast). Also, we do not have enough details to determine whether the available evidence (if it is reliable) fits this scenario. There are discrepancies.

We may know more soon. This was not an isolated incident but should be seen in the context of escalatory moves by both North Korea and Iran, whose missile and nuclear programs are cooperative and interrelated. An accident could be related to heightened activity and operations at the site. An attack by one of several external powers (working jointly or separately) could be related to heightened activity. And a test, not of a nuclear device, but the ICBM capable of hitting all areas of the continental US (TD-3), could actually have been/be the reason behind the heightened activity.

I am leaving my mind open at this point as to not only the type of event (accident from increased North Korean operating tempo, preemptive attack by one of several nations who perceive an imminent threat from these missiles (ND2 and TD1, TD2, and TD3) - - and there are at least seven nations who each have very specific reasons to feel threatened by these missiles, or a test of some sort), but separate from the type, I am also keeping my mind open to the nature of the event (missile or nuclear).

To: MamaDearest
My opinion:

Actually, MamaDearest, those 2 (Traveller and eom, etc.) are not in the same category. I should have explained more about him and perhaps posted some more background when I posted that message from Traveller. Maybe a handful of posts from Traveller have been posted here on TM in the past, but not near enough to get the proper measure and substance of his posts which really offer a keyhole sometimes into the jihadi mindset -- and without the rancor of the true active jihadis. He himself has never ever claimed to be al qaeda or any other terrorist.

Because of the experiences we have had with eom/daleel, it is crucial to point out that Traveller is not one of "them" in my opinion.

Traveller's comments are always measured and they ring true. He never preaches death and destruction and doom and gloom. He does make it clear that al qaeda will attempt to hit its intended targets with all it can possibly muster and in new and different ways (hence the message I posted from him earlier). But we know that already.

*******It is important to see that his post gave his view that he has NOT seen alot of excitement chatter among the jihadis. I thought that was interesting. Even so, plans somewhere may well be underway. He actually was the first to say that al qaeda in his opinion would attempt a hit in relation to the elections BEFORE we ever started preparing for it and this was also BEFORE the Madrid bombings. And so here we are. He doesn't pretend to be connected, although he could be I suppose. But in the least he seems to be able to think like al qaeda (and that's why I like him).*******

I have been reading Traveller for a long time and his posts are usually fascinating and informative; they lay out what he sees is behind al qaeda's hatred of the West and its allies. And just as important -- they also offer his OPINIONS on what al qaeda's gameplan may be here and all over the world. He has never been a poster who posts threats and then disappears. Never. He never really posts threats; but he answers the threat-related questions of others with his OPINIONS when they inquire.

Such a perspective can only come from someone like him. So far, he is unique in these ways. Yet he does not "hate" us. In fact, he says he has lived the Western lifestyle in his past and he much prefers his muslim/islamic/arab (I don't know which name he would prefer) lifestyle better; calling it more moral. He helps make it clear -- in the words of a non-Westerner -- why the West is disliked.

Traveller is valuable to me in understanding al qaeda in a certain way. For example, it is interesting to listen to Western experts talk about al qaeda, and it can be interesting listening to the rants of admitted terrorists and their supporters. But the first group approaches it impersonally largely in an academic way (as it must) and the latter almost always via angry threats although sometimes they also lay out their beefs/annoyances and their goals/objectives. Posters like Traveller help me fill in the gap.

He has a good insight it seems to me yet he does not rant and rave with threats (only answers questions about threats if they are posed to him) and he has never to my knowledge made such a threat or even said he wished for the destruction of any group of people. He always pokes fun at us but I find it amusing and that is nothing compared with the abuse HE gets whenever he posts!

As I was looking back in his archives last evening, I found some old posts by him in which he explained the significances behind al qaeda's usual favored attack date of Tuesday (although things are not limited to Tuesdays; sometimes opportunity just isn't knocking on a Tuesday so say the jihadis). I will post it as soon as I can. It is only one example of the view and information he offers. I think I posted awhile back about what Traveller or another poster said about Tuesday as an attack date, but the post from Traveller which I reread last night has better detail.

Well, now that I told you my view of Traveller, I am sure it is more than you ever cared to know! But, again, I wanted to point out that he is a somewhat likeable rogue (to me anyway; not all probably agree and that is ok) who provides good info. And there really is no way to know that without some background on him. Sorry I didn't offer it earlier.

I think Trav is pretty sharp. And everyone usually slaps down the CIA. From what I hear, the CIA needs some folks who can infiltrate al qaeda and talk to us at the same time. Who knows, they might have a place for Trav.

P.S. I know I certainly would love to attend a meeting with you, Traveller and the rest of the crew!

The Arab Muslims have an insidious technique of negotiating falsely that seems invisible to the Free West. Have you noticed that every time Arab Muslims have their backs to the wall in a losing position due to a conflict they initiated, they immediately proclaim they are willing to negotiate?

It is terrorists like Yasser Arafat, Osama Bin-Laden and other Al-Qaeda operatives, Saddam Hussein in his time and Moqtada Al-Sadr now (head of Shiite terrorists in Iraq), who rise up and kill. However, when hit hard, they plead for negotiations - only to start attacking again. Nations like Egypt, Libya, Syria, Iran, et al., in prior wars howled for international intervention as they started to lose battles they started. Perhaps it is not just their cleverness in following war and terror instructions from the Koran, but our anxiousness to avoid finishing the battle and our vain hope for an easy way out.

"This is not tied to your thoughts that the al Qaeda threat may be related to the blasts, but is it possible that we caused the N.K. blasts in a non-nuclear pre-emptive strike?"

It is a big stretch that the Zawahiri statements and the "event" were connected, but I thought I'd mention it anyway. There has been informed speculation about a potential sale to AQ. The Pakistani-American Fox commentator (forgot his name, it's Monday) and former Defense Secretary Perry have both written on this issue.

"but is it possible that we caused the N.K. blasts in a non-nuclear pre-emptive strike? Do we even have that capability?"

Those who know don't tell and those who tell don't know. I don't know, so I'll just say that the reason we keep developing larger conventional bombs (like MOAB) and mini- and micro-nukes is so we can have the option of digging out deeply buried facilities, bunkers, etc.

I am not sure that if there were attempts to use these new bombs designed to dig out bunkers, that they were unqualified successes in Iraq. Besides that, any theoretical operation against DPRK missile bases would be extremely high risk. The ICBMs are likely stationed far away from the DMZ on the Chinese border and it is not out of the question that if we were to directly attack these bases and not get them all, the "Dear Leader" could give the order to launch.

I doubt we would launch a direct attack against these sites.

"The whole event is so mysterious because it seems that we would know the nature of the blasts relatively quickly through our surveillance."

DPRK may want to prove its capability without provoking regional action against them. Any theoretical test would then have to be just public enough to convey the message that they have operational weapons, but might not be so blatant that it would spin up the South Koreans, Japanese, and U.S. It would be a "calibrated threat".

If, on the other hand, if the DPRK were to carry out a test, announce it, or publicize it in another way for all to see, that would be an extremely provocative and escalatory measure. Japan is the only nation with first-hand experience of being on the receiving end of nuclear weapons, and they have already declared they will not sit still if it looks like DPRK is about to cross the line.

Brinkmanship means going to the edge without crossing over that point of no return.

Unfortunately, the best laid plans of both mice and men at times go awry.

If you want a *really* wild idea, our government sends Kim the following note:

Your friend Iran is about to become part of a grave international crisis. You are engaged in the same behavior with the Iranians and have made yourself vulnerable to similar actions.

If you want to be left out of the coming crisis as we take the matter to the UN, you should follow up on the project you began last week with "excavations" at the following (pick a number) sites listed below. We know you have declared that you are moving boldly ahead in the attempt to generate more electrical generation capacity for your people (as your excavation last week for your "hydroelectric dam" demonstrates). We know this is the reason you initially stated that you started your "peaceful" nuclear program at Yongbyon. If you perform these excavations in the next (pick a number) days, we will understand the sincerity of your desire to build a new future for your country and you will receive written guarantees from the nations on the UN Security Council that you will be excluded from the Iranian action that is forthcoming.

Furthermore, we would be willing to ask the regional nations to help provide immediate assistance in your endeavor to provide short-term energy assistance for the coming winter and longer-term assistance in power generation and food aid.

If you accept this "deal", you can claim to your military that your nuclear program did deter an attack (the current Iranian regime will be taken down in the end - - the only question is how bad it might get - - but North Korea will be exempted) . You can claim that it did preserve the independence of the DPRK and opened up a new era of cooperation and assistance.

If you persist in your ever more dangerous brinkmanship, the situation could spin out of control, and perhaps at that point, others in North Korea would be prepared to accept this offer in order to spare the country further misery.

A UN flotilla of ships laden with fuel oil and food aid will be prepared and waiting for your response and public guarantees of further aid will be issued upon your agreement. At such time, a massive UN relief operation for your country can be organized upon your request.

International aid will be delivered to your country when your government, or its successor, agrees to excavate these "power generation" sites in a comprehensive, verifiable, and irreversible manner.

Libya or Iraq - - the easy way or the hard way.

Please think about it and get back to us.

Latest N. Korean excuse is that they were blasting rock as part of construction of a dam. I am suspecting that one of their underground fuel/ammo facilities had some dummy smoking in a non-smoking area and .......... It will be interesting if some of the sat photos get posted just like those at the railroad station a few months ago. That will tell us far more.

Quite maddening that Gorelick had any place on the 9/11 Commission. I can't think of a single sitting participant whose prejudices played any greater role and who had any more to lose if the Flight 800 fiasco were investigated and uncovered.

I loaned Jack Cashill's book "TWA Flight 800 & the Attack on America" to a friend in the airline industry. He thought it was a little too "conspiracy theory", but that it did raise enough questions that further investigation was warranted. He was most disturbed by the chain of command on the investigation coming so unhinged.

The hypothetical note to Kim sounds like the perfect solution that would allow NK to save face. It doesn't seem to be such a wild idea to me, but the fact that it makes so much sense would alienate the U.N. from any involvement. Impending action in Iran must happen sooner rather than later.

British Diplomat to Visit North Korea Explosion Scene

By Jamie Lyons, Political Correspondent, PA News, in Korea

A top British diplomat is to be taken to the scene of a massive blast in North Korea to verify the regime’s denial of nuclear tests.

The North Korean government has told Britain’s ambassador, David Slinn, he can visit the site as soon as tomorrow to check its claims that the explosion was caused deliberately as part of a major construction project.

A two-and-a-half mile wide mushroom cloud was seen close to the Chinese border on Thursday, sparking fears the ultra-secretive Communist regime may have carried out nuclear tests.

But the regime today dismissed those claims as “lies from hostile forces”.

Foreign Minister Paek Nam Sun told British Foreign Office Minister Bill Rammell – in Pyongyang for three days of talks on North Korea’s nuclear programme – the explosion was a controlled demolition of a mountain.

He said it was part of the construction of a hydro-electric power plant...

North Korea is threatening to pull out of the six-country talks on its nuclear capability in the face of perceived hostility from the USA. One of the main aims of Mr Rammell’s visit is to increase pressure on the regime to continue those talks. Australian and Chinese delegations have pushed the same message recently...

He has dangled the comparison of Libya in front of the North Koreans as an example of a state that renounced its nuclear ambitions and secured major benefits from doing so.

North Korea desperately needs help with energy and food supplies. The US said it could get aid with energy if it freezes its nuclear activities for three months and commits to dismantling them... (snipped)
