Definitely planned in a way to hurt GWB.
However, I don't see this hurting him. It certainly appears the experts are lining up on the side of forgery and not with CBS.

As long as the focus is off Kerry, he can't get his message out (whatever the hell that is).
Kerry has got to try to grab the agenda back, but he can't, as long as it's on the National Guard service.
The public has made up its mind about Bush's National Guard service, and they don't care about it.

Not gonna happen. They have to know that. We've got too much ammo that hasn't even hit the big media yet. Matthews got nowhere despite the calculation and the hit-job on exPOW Jim Warner last night.

The two "experts" who Dan Rather had on his show are Clintonistas.
One "verified" that Vince Foster's suicide note was real.
The other wrote a book "Growing Up Clinton" which was a glowing account.
I smell Hitlery all the way behind this. She knows the Kerry camp will be tied to this debacle and that forged military documents is a federal crime. Tie it to Kerry and he's finished. Which is just what she wants.

All it focuses on is the steps the Rats will do to lie and cheat their way to a victory. There's nothing about this story that hurts Bush in any way.

I suspect that's part of it, particularly after I heard that they've been working on this story for 4 years.

It is planned, but it will not help. I believe Bush will have 10 more poll points by this time next week.

If it wasnt planned as a red-herring diversion, it might turn out that way... we need to get attention back to SWIFTEES... load another torpedo tube and fire away you sailors, its time...

I've entertained this theory as well. Not convinced of it, but worth keeping in mind. This keeps the words "Bush", "national guard", and "questions" on the front pages. Details almost don't matter - that's probably not good for Bush. Also now CBS has an excuse to keep force feeding America "experts", "witnesses" etc who will tell us what they think of what Bush did 30 years ago. You know, because they have to defend themselves against charges - thus they have no choice but to parade people who will establish that the fake memos "fit the pattern" etc.
I'm not saying I totally embrace this theory, just that I can't discount it :-)

I don't think there's any question that any of this military discussion is Kerry's way of avoiding discussion of his Senate record. But it is a spider's web of his own making. He is in a no win situation. If he discusses his Senate record, he is clearly too liberal to be elected. If he deflects his discussion to military matters, he loses by virtue of being a phoney. Lose-lose.

I'm just wondering if CBS is just trying to help Kerry change the focus to Bush's records instead of Kerry's.With friends like that, he hardly needs enemies.

No.
This is damaging Kerry very badly.
Swift Vets came out with new ads today, and they are bumping up against these allegations. It is linking that Kerry is a flake and forged Bush's documents (no kidding).
