Okay...so forget the type...that still doesn't account for Staudt's name being used when he retired a year before the memo was written.

In addition to all the points that point to the documents themselves being forgeries, isn't this relevant?

From:

UPDATE 12: In the August 18, 1973 memo "discovered" by 60 Minutes, Jerry Killian purportedly writes:

Staudt has obviously pressured Hodges more about Bush. I'm having trouble running interference and doing my job. But wait! Reader Amar Sarwal points out that General Staudt, who thought very highly of Lt. Bush, retired in 1972.

"Sure, I did that too. But the problem is, it's PERFECT! We're talking right down to the fraction of a space. It has to be within .020 or .030 of an inch for the letters to match up as perfectly as they do. No way can somebody be that perfect on three different lines."

Not on the IBM Executive. Remember, it has spaces that divide each space into three. That's how it does the proportional spacing. There are two spacebars on the machine. One moves the spacebar the width of the letter "i". The other moves it the width of the letter "n".

Backspacing works the same way. You'd be amazed at how small a movement you get with that typewriter.

How do I know? I used one to typeset a small magazine for about three years. You can do it just fine. I even had a whole set of alternative type bars with special characters, and used them all the time. Among them were the ordinal number endings as superscripts, like "th"

What I'm saying is that this document COULD have been prepared with an IBM Executive of the day. It WASN'T, because it would have taken even me an hour or so to do it, and I'd have done a much better job than the sloppy work done in this memo.

Nobody would do it. But...and I stress this...it COULD have been done, and CBS may be going to show you. You have no idea of the capabilities of that particular typewriter unless you have used it. And the military DID have them.

It's still a forgery, but it's not that simple.

I thought it was Deep Font.

Deep Typo? "Follow the spacing. Oh yea, don't forget about the superscripts, either".

"The source of the documents was not the DNC. The source of the documents was the Travis County Texas (Austin) Democrat Party."

Uh, if true, this isn't the best news to squash the "Rove did it to cast the Dems in a bad light" line of thinking, especially when considered in combination with this , which also took place in Austin.

There is NO WAY to conclusively prove these are forgeries.

There absolutely is.

The commander that supposedly was applying pressure to Killian retired the year before the memo was written, and Killian does not write in the past tense.

If the documents are genuine, then the source is covered by First Amendment privilege.

There is no such privelege in the 1st ammendment.

The Pentagon was asked about the P.O. Box on one of the documents.
The Pentgon confirmed that would not have been military protocol for documentation and confirmed it was "highly unusual".
That's pretty strong. They could have said, "I have not seen any of the documents and cannot confirm or deny"

The producer in Dallas received the forged documents from someone else in Texas. Talk is from operatives from the Travis County (Austin) Demonrat organization.

I say we call the FCC

A letter in every CBS broadcaster, to be considered when they come up for relicensing; CC the FCC at the same time as you make the deposit with the broadcaster.

Licenses are granted on the condition that teh broadcaster serve the public interest. THis activity is clearly AGAINST the public interest.

So it appears we've just about determined the origin of these documents...

There has been so much misinformation here about the technology of 1972, written mostly by people who weren't even alive then, or by people who never used the modern office equipment of the day.

Even the most experienced typist, with the most expensive proportional typewriter, and all of the wiz-bang replacement keys could not duplicate the kerning used in modern word processing software and laser printers. These documents clearly display this kerning.

Therefore, there is no way these documents could have been typed on the dates identified in the documents.
