THE "New" CBS BUSH DOCUMENTS: Let's do some investigating
www.freerepublic.com | September 9, 2004

Posted on 09/08/2004 9:16:02 PM PDT by Howlin

These are the NEW documents "discovered" by CBS with conjunction with their Ben Barnes expose/confessional tonight regarding George Bush's National Guard service.

They've gotten some interesting comments on the Live Thread, so I thought I'd give them their own thread so you people out there with the knowledge can dissect them for their accuracy/truth/existence.

From the official USPS site:
Occasionally the US Postal Service® will add new or realign existing ZIP Code™ areas to accommodate population growth.

New ZIP Codes are released by the District Office approximately 30 days before the ZIP Code change goes into effect.
Most large mailers (i.e., credit card or utility companies) subscribe to US Postal Service products that will reflect the ZIP Code change within three to six months from the effective date.
Friends, family and smaller businesses will have to be notified individually.
Mail with the old ZIP Code will continue to be delivered for one year.
Well, so much for that great discovery. Can I get some of that crow over here? :(

I think I've found evidence of at least one of the memos being run through the same copier multiple times.

Here's a closeup of the Aug 1, 1972 memo:

(The rest of the dots look like random noise.)

For what it's worth we have a working IBM Personal Wheelwriter in our office. I know this isn't exactly the typewriter that's been referenced but for the heck of it I typed the first paragraph of the May 19, 1972 memo, first in word (Times New Roman 12) and then on the IBM (12P).

As has been confirmed here, the paragraph breaks in Word occur exactly as they do in the May 19 memo.On the typewriter, using the same left margin, I was only able to get this much of the first line before running off the paper (in other words, extending the right margin to the end of the paper and I could not fit drill in):

1. Phone Call from Bush. Discussed options of how Bush can get out of coming to

Yes, actually, the "th" was a single special key on some typewriters.

Still it looks like the forgery has been adequately demonstrated via other means so this is now irrelevant.

Excellent observation, jennyp. To summarize:

1. The forged memos can be exactly reproduced on MS word.

2. No one has come up with a reasonable explanation for the superscripts on 111th and 187th.

3. Memos were copied multiple times on the same machine.

4. Even a 4 year-old child can tell the signatures of Killian on the forgeries differ from his signatures on officially released documents (not even close, the order and types of pen strokes on the K differ in 3 ways alone)

5. The timing and content of the memos are best described as suspicious.

Conclusion: they are undeniably forgeries. The signature alone establishes that.

Well, Hewitt had Farrell Shiver on. Let me be as brief as I can: Shiver is exceptionally careful, but there is no doubt in Hugh Hewitt's mind - and Hugh is a a careful law professor - that these documents are forged. BTW Below is from Shiver's website and include his bona fides:

The Shiver & Nelson Document Investigation Laboratory is owned by Farrell C. Shiver. His qualifications in the field of forensic document examination include:

* Certified by the American Board of Forensic Document Examiners
* Member and Treasurer of the American Society of Questioned Document Examiners
* Member of the Questioned Documents Section of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences
* Member of the Southeastern Association of Forensic Document Examiners
* Former Chief Document Examiner - U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Laboratory
* Editor, Journal of the American Society of Questioned Document Examiners
* Graduate of, and former chief instructor for the U.S. Army's two-year resident training program in Forensic Document Examination
* Court qualified expert, including U.S. Federal District Court
* Experienced in criminal cases and civil cases
* Author of numerous papers and articles on the subject of Forensic Document Examination
* Retired Special Agent of the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command

As we have said ... CBS is BUSTED!

Per Brit - Killian's son says he thinks the documents are a mixture of fact and fiction. That keeping documents like that in a secret filecan only be bad for the officer keeping them.

I just fat fingered one of the documents into Word with the defaults. It is an EXACT match. Try it.

Not to throw a monkey wrench into this, the IBM Executive typewriter did have proportional fonts.

It would be nice to see the paper. Not only is the font proportional, it looks like there's some kerning going on. In the word 'failure', it looks like the top of the f overhangs the a. That required a typesetter in the 70s.

Unfortunately, I suppose that 16 generations of photocopying could mimic this. But, why in the world is somebody's private copy get photocopied 16 times?
