WASHINGTON AP) - The Bush administration differed Tuesday with Russian President Vladimir Putin and said that only a political settlement could end the crisis between Russia and the breakaway region of Chechnya.

The administration also left open the possibility of U.S. meetings with Chechens who are not linked to terrorists.

Secretary of State Colin Powell and Deputy Secretary Richard Armitage signed a book of condolences at the Russian Embassy over the deaths of at least 330 people, most of them children, during a hostage-taking last week at a school in the southern city of Beslan.

For peace to exist there is going to require diplomacy.

Yep that is the way it worked when we left South Vietnam, negotiation works every time. </sarcasm>

Putin should tell Chechnya turn over the terrorists immediately

Chechnya ain't it, The attack was international. Mid East prepared and funded. Executed by their men too.

The entire staff of the State Dept. should be sacked and replaced with Bush appointees.

As of this moment, unless Bush admits a mistake was made and people are fired, I'm voting for Kerry.

I saw a captured terrorists...he was Chechnyan. There is no doubt Chechnyans were among those that murdered the children. By all reports, the killings were ordered by the leader of the Chechnyan rebels. There were Arabs among the Chechnyan terrorists (They were all Islamic). However, these people train in and are in Chechnnya as we speak.

LOL! I know the scene of which you speak. Those arrows are best saved for a better time and subject. The Liberal Media swarm hasn't even begun yet. Its going to be a long six weeks and there are a lot of Zulus heading Bush's way.

I sense a little frustration combined with instigation in the ranks of FR these days. This is one of many such postings of late. The trolls have allied with dark wizards it seems to whisper distress along the line.

My guess is that Putin will receive a private phone call from the President telling him to go after them.

I don't know about that. But Putin for sure ain't gonna wait for anybody to call him after this statement.

We'll have to watch and see what happens. One poster thought this was the Administration's way of saying "if you want us to support you, then you need to start supporting us". I guess that's a possibility, too. Also, this is the AP, so I hesitate to trust any of it. Going into a rage over something the AP says is often a waste of good rage.

When one watches news reports that show bloodied children who were shot in the back, starved, raped, bayoneted and tortured one tends to lose one's nuanced approach.

I certainly agree with that.

My intital reaction was the same: Outrage at the State Dept.

The State Dept is speaking the only language it knows

"Putin should tell Chechnya turn over the terrorists immediately as we did to the Taliban"

And how do you "tell" Chechnya something? It's a region, not a person. The problem here is that you're assuming that the Chechens as a whole can "turn over" anyone. They cannot. As usual, it's a small segment of the population that's doing the terrorism, in alignment with terrorists from outside the region. Telling "Chechnya" to do anything is like telling your car to start when you've forgotten your keys. It will have no effect.

The WOT is an extremely tough war to fight. There's no identifiable central leadership to destroy. There's no central location to attack. There are no bases, airfields, or any other such definable places in which to find the enemy.

Some here suggest that we just raze the entire region. But, the region is full of all sorts of people, most of whom just want to go about their business of getting their VERY modest living. So, what do you do? Blow up entire cities because there are terrorists there? I guess not.

We're facing the same problem in Iraq and Afghanistan. You cannot simply dismiss collateral damage and nuke the area. It's a difficult thing, fighting an essentially guerilla war. It always has been, and always will be. Such wars are seldom won. They just peter out.

I saw that about the Koreans, Ernest.

Old Media is just so darned tired they can't be counted on the report on these matters appropriately.

You didn't look well enough. 10 Arab Muslims vs 5 Chechens or so, the rest from all over the place. Paid by Saudi Arabia, trained in Pakistan or Afghanistan. A very international terrorist gang.

The State Department can't make a move like this without the President's knowledge and consent. He appointed the department heads. As for negotiating with terrorists what do you call what we did with Sadr? Hell he is running in their national elections when just last month we had an arrest warrant out on him for murder. WTF!

If the Mexicans infiltrating the Southwest US were to rise up with arms against American authorities, I'd expect no less.

Boy are you ever optimistic.<(•¿•)>

If our government is really serious about fighting terrorists, they will shut the hell up and support Putin.

After what those maggots did in Ossetia, I refuse to believe that MY Govt would do this.
