U.S. calls for diplomacy with Chechens(State Department)

WASHINGTON AP) - The Bush administration differed Tuesday with Russian President Vladimir Putin and said that only a political settlement could end the crisis between Russia and the breakaway region of Chechnya.

The administration also left open the possibility of U.S. meetings with Chechens who are not linked to terrorists.

Secretary of State Colin Powell and Deputy Secretary Richard Armitage signed a book of condolences at the Russian Embassy over the deaths of at least 330 people, most of them children, during a hostage-taking last week at a school in the southern city of Beslan.

"Do you think it so far-fetched that our President is in favor of diplomatic solutions to the Chechnya issue? I don't."

Everyone WOULD BE in favor of a diplomatic solution to all the worlds terrorist problems. The problem is you can't negotiate with terrorists. They have no power to enforce compliance on anyone. Chechnya is no different. You can negotiate with a provisional Chechen govt. till you are blue in the face and it won't stop Chechen terrorists.Diplomatic solutions are not practical in this situation.

"Um, Gentlemen, the AP article that triggered this post has, I'm pretty sure, be removed, was it false?"

Doubtful. Putin made reference to the State dept's position as well.

This is what really happened. Putin accused the US of being soft on Chechnyan terrorists...he said it was like asking us to negotiate with Bin Laden. State had met with Chechnyans, but denied meeting with terrorists (same thing) and said there had been no meetings since 2002. State was quite concilatory and pledged full support for Russian. I have posted thread below. I am so relieved-as usual the AP and others are out and out liars.

More and more I am thinking this is another AP blunder with them taking state department officials words out of context, or it could nothing but a hoax. You can see the firestorm it caused. I saw a few post who said they would not vote for Bush because of it. Heck I got angry myself and had forwarded the story to a few friends.

Story was by BARRY SCHWEID, AP Diplomatic Writer, printed in something called FresnoBee. The FresnoBee??????

Calm heads folks.

Check out the link above...you will see what really happened. Barry is a liar. He completely twisted the story. The point was America stood in solidarity with the Russian people.

"It must be completely discredited and wiped out as a condition for peace. "

We are in agreement, believe me. I'm just not sure that bombing them to the stone age is the answer, given what we've witnessed by the Chechens, who've been bombed to the stone age for 10 years. Also, most of the Islamic world lives pretty much in stone age conditions already.

I also, obviously, don't support appeasement either, as we all know that's a failed ideal. Honestly, I'm not sure what the answer is, unless Islam decides - like Christianity thru Martin Luther - to Reform itself.

And no, Christianity was NEVER the threat to existence and civilization that Islam is, but was still in dire need of Martin Luther's actions.

Christianity reformed itself by returning to and dissemination of the New Testament. What is Islam going to return to when the Koran itself is the source and authority for hate? "Reformation" is just another vain mantra of the left. 9/11 and Beslan ARE the Muslim Reformation.

[9.29] Fight those who do not believe in Allah, nor in the latter day, nor do they prohibit what Allah and His Apostle have prohibited, nor follow the religion of truth, out of those who have been given the Book, until they pay the tax in acknowledgment of superiority and they are in a state of subjection.
[9.30] And the Jews say: Uzair is the son of Allah; and the Christians say: The Messiah is the son of Allah; these are the words of their mouths; they imitate the saying of those who disbelieved before; may Allah destroy them; how they are turned away!

I would include these in my tag line if there were the space.

Are you saying that the entire population of the nation-State of Chechnya should now be considered terrorists?

Are you aware that nearly half of Chechnya's population has been killed or displaced by the Russian occupation?

I think this is some kind of bait-and-switch tactic.
It must be a trick of some kind.
