Giving up the ghosts

Ghost-seekers find lively site Ashland spot opens its doors to probers of the paranormal

By Lisa Kocian, Globe Staff | September 5, 2004

Lisa Whiting says she has seen the little girl.

This was about seven years ago, when Whiting was standing behind Stone's Public House in Ashland, around the time she started working there. She happened to glance up and see a wee ghost looking down from a second-floor window.

"She's very clear -- crystal-clear," said Whiting, describing the apparition as having long dark hair and wearing a white dress. "It's not like she's hazy. She looks like she's real, like she's standing up there."

Apparently she's still around: Last month a customer sitting out on the patio asked who the little girl was in the window. The answer made her bolt from her seat and run inside.

A source of reported ghost sightings for decades, Stone's Public House, now a bar and restaurant, was recently the subject of an otherworldly investigation, the results of which will be revealed next month on a new Sci-Fi Channel series, "Ghost Hunters."

Aside from the ghosts themselves, the stars of the show are a group of diehard spirit-seekers from the Atlantic Paranormal Society, based in Rhode Island. The group's motto: "We scare them back."

They visited Stone's in July and set up an array of equipment straight out of the movie "Ghostbusters," including an electromagnetic field detector and an infrared camera.

The investigators won't talk about what they found, but they promise the episode featuring the old Ashland landmark will be worth watching.

"I'll just say it was a very good show," said Brian Harnois, head of the society's technical department. "It was one of our best investigations so far. It's a little freaky." Continued...

Yeah, that's what scares me more than anything. These lefties will do anything to steal this. They oppose any effort to make sure that only registered folks vote. Each year, I'm convinced that many many votes are cast by illegal aliens, convicted felons, dead people, people who are infirmed, dead people, people who have moved and just about any other form of voter fraud. I'm also convinced that 99.9% of these are votes for the Democrat regardless of the office.

Voter fraud is an issue that needs to be tackled after this election. The best solution would be a national system...but that will cause the folks opposed to a national id card to go nuts. Requiring an id at the state level is a start but it will not stop situations like the 68,000 people registered in both Florida and New York, who could easily vote absentee in one location and in person in the other.

When I was a girl, I had an interesting experience. My dad was away on a business trip. I was awakened out of a sound sleep by a menacing presence in the hall to my room. My parent's room was at the other end of that hallway. I could almost see the presence; I most certainly could feel it. I grabbed my sewing shears up and went into the hallway just in time to hear my mother gasping from her bedroom. I woke her. She was utterly terrified. Said there'd been a man there with his hands around her neck, choking her. Caveat: I have this big thing about being intimidated; even bigger about loved ones being bullied or intimidated. I don't like it; so I confront it. Always been this way. Muleheaded is another word for it, I suppose.

Anyway, my mom and I talked about the presence. We had near identical physical descriptions of the presence. Amazing? It was an Indian character, as in Native American. She and I were able to piece out "why" this "apparition". Did our research. No, we didn't do a "save the Miwok" ceremony. We hung up horsehoes. :) And I made a noose, hung it, in case the presence dared to return to hurt or bother us again. And, I was at the particular age of puberty when "presences" tend to appear in households with pubescent teens.

Great story. Was this the one & only time there was a presence in your home?

Actually, no. I had two events (prior to this one last incident of "visitation") of perceiving a menacing presence in my bedroom with me during the night; being awakened by these. I awakened, paralyzed with fear, or cognition. I could almost see this presence. Right close by to me.

In both events, once I mustered my furious outrage at being "intimidated" and moved to deal with the presence, it always vanished. That incident involving my mom was the last time I was bothered by a "presence."

There've been numerous analysis done by "experts" on the subject of pubescent(teen) girls experiencing such "visitations". Stories which underlay flicks like "The Crucible" (involving) young girls -- are more fodder for this specifically peculiar event. Usually having to do with major reproductive hormones being active in the girls' bodies. I've studied both medical and non-medical analyses of these "presences" in re teen girls. The reportings of "presences" and teen girls is not uncommon throughout history.

I've also studied numerous psychologic analyses on the subject: That psychologically, the subbrain is registering strong hormonal activity within the body and projecting a (new or menacing presence) to the sleeper.

So you are saying the presence is not a spirit? Then in your opinion what is it? If you were dreaming I can see waking up frightened but what had your mother by the throat?

What you are asking are both very good, solid questions. I can take the rational choice, and logically explain both questions. I can also simply assert there was a spirit. I get to decide. You do too. It's the nature of psi exploration -- to not only pay attention to the logical and rational; but to not deny the illogical. If it had happened again, more regularly, that's when it is worthwhile to get some heavy duty monitoring equipment into place -- to measure waves, temps, etc --which then begins the process of leaning the answer to one side or another, of which of course, other considerations must be evaluated.
