One-Sided Security (Canada more worried about smokes and booze than terrorists)

Posted on 09/05/2004 11:36:02 AM PDT by quidnunc

The phone rings, and it is long-haul trucker Peter Fischer, calling from a rest stop near the village of Cridersville, Ohio — founded in 1856 by Ephriam and Polly Crider, owners of the first steam-powered gristmill in the area.

But he's not calling to talk history.

No, Peter Fischer, on his weekly run to Atlanta from his home base in London, Ont. — his 18-wheeler loaded down with auto parts, and his brain still in high gear from reading a small item in a now week-old Sun — is calling to expand on a letter he wrote to this newspaper about the federal government's plan for a sweeping examination of potential terrorist threats to politicians and judges.

At first he could not believe the item he had read, especially considering his first-hand experiences with a post-9/11 United States that has its border screwed down tight while Canada's remains virtually as porous as a sieve.

And Fischer ought to know. The 50-year-old trucker has been crossing the border on a regular basis for more than 15 years — both for business and for pleasure.

"I went to Kentucky with my family on a holiday and brought back ammunition boxes for M-16 rifles, which I planned to turn into flower pots," he says. "And I was never questioned about them when I returned to Canada, even though they were stacked four-high in my van.

"So never mind the politicians and the judges," he says. "How about protecting the rest of us?"

-snip-

Can't have the government losing that revenue from tobacco and alcohol taxes, eh.)

You're on a roll today, quid. This is your second hate-all-Canadians thread for today alone.

Sure, their liberals are as arrogant, obnoxious, and STUPID as ours, but it's never brought out in these articles that there's actually some [gasp!] good Canadians left. The Western Canadians can be just as conservative as you, they're just outnumbered by socialist Eastern Canadians.

Thank you for pointing this out. Quidnunc has a habit (as you know) of bringing any negative (liberal) press to the attention of FR. The one problem that we have here is the libs and their ability to repeatedly get voted in. For what its worth, I'm from the Maritimes.

Yes, and albertabound ran across quid's earlier 'Canadaphobic' thread today.

Quidnunc, I don't understand, did some Canadian ever run down your mother with a moose? Maybe you were stuck in a elevator once, and had to listen to Anne Murray songs for hours? Maybe it's Expo envy because you live in Cub's country? Or perhaps you were a Navy SEAL and they clubbed you over the head by mistake?:)

Whatever your problem is, not all Canadians act like their versions of Massachusetts, New Jersey, or Rhode Island Democrats. And decadence? They don't have anything to compare to the gays of San Francisco or New York.

Yeah, their stupid socialist government is letting in any Muslim that wants to immigrate, while the U.S. is really tough about checking drivers entering across our northern border. Meanwhile, millions of illegals Mexicans and anybody else that wants to can enter the U.S. on our southern border.

They have Muslim Pakis, and we have over 300,000 Muslim Iraqi legal immigrants in Detroit alone. And I wish they'd take our Clinton-era imported 20,000+ stone-age Muslim Somalians now living on welfare in Maine. We've both screwed up in the legal/illegal immigration disaster.

Here's the thing, all your articles read like every Canadian is a worthless America-hating parasite, and that's a wholesale libel of a whole country when there's millions of of conservative Canadians, really good decent people, and you know that's true. Why beat on ALL Canadians; the gross national character your articles portray is dishonest, and outright bigotry. Why? I'm not pinging a mod right now, I'd like to know what you think you're doing.

It's really quite simple.

For years the Canadians have been telling us to our face that they're really our best friends in the whole wide world while they mock and revile us behind our backs.

The last straw for me was their craven performancve at the Durban conference.

To my mind it is in Americans' interest to know who our friends really are.

To that end I post articles — most of which come from Canadian sources, by the way — which demonstrate that Canada can no longer be considered a staunch ally.

They have become a pacifist eurocentric country which has conspired with other countries to constrain America's power, and as such they are not entirely to be trusted.

I am repeating myself here with a post on another thread but FWIW:

After 9/11 Canadians donated 37,000 pints of blood. That's 1.2 pints per 1000 people. Even in the US we only managed to hit 1.6/1000.

I don't think this could be called "mocking" and "reviling". How many pints did we receive from our oh-so-loyal ally Great Britain?

There probably are more America-hating Brits than Canadians. I would surely hit a Canadian sports bar anytime over a British pub.

After 9/11 Americans started donating blood but it was soon evident that it wasn't needed and what had been already donated was going to go to waste.

Evidently Canada's media didn't get that message out.

That doesn't in any way negate the effort by the Canadian people. Each individual donated in an unselfish attempt to help any which way they could think of.

It goes further than the donation of blood and quidnunc knows this.

For the record, I have seen quidnunc post articles that were somewhat positive (on Free Dominion I believe). For the most part though, he posts articles that reflect poorly on us.

Quidnunc, you say you post articles from Canadian sources. Fine, look at these sources ... most of them are left leaning. They do not represnet the entire populace. Yet, the way you present them paints all of us with the same brush. This representation is inaccurate ... and you know it.

Let's see now, for how many years have Canadians kept the America-bashing Liberal Trudeaupeans in power in Ottawa?

If there wasn't a market for anti-Americanism in Canada the politicians and elites wouldn't be doing it.

So are you telling me that these Trudeaupeans are supported by 100% of us?

"If there wasn't a market for anti-Americanism in Canada the politicians and elites wouldn't be doing it."

Will it be open season on you should Kerry get in? Would that be indicative of the "market" in the US? The anti-Americanism you referred to is getting negative support here as well. Why don't you post those articles?
