BESLAN, Russia - A group of about 30 women and children broke out of a school in southern Russia where militants were holding hundreds of people captive Friday, a news agency reported, after two loud explosions were heard and Russian commandos opened fire near the building.The Interfax news agency said that the school's roof had collapsed and militants were shelling and firing from the building. Interfax said the hostages who broke out of the school included women and children. It was impossible to immediately verify the reports.
Two helicopters hovered overhead. An ambulance rushed from the scene and CNN reported that at least two people were wounded. On Thursday, the militants inside the school had released some 26 of the hundreds of hostages held inside the building since Wednesday.

You know the only thing I ever worried about in this war was that Russia would use terrorism as a wedge against us. I still worry about the Chinese, but if we join together -- Russians and Americans -- there won't be anything left of this scourge within a few short months.
Something tells me the wedge issue isn't something we need to fear, at least not from the north.

I am deeply affected by this. I see my beautiful daugher's face when I look at the images of children fleeing from danger. There is so much I want to let out right now, but I won't share my thoughts in full on this subject. Suffice to say that I pray for the safety and well being the innocent and for a quick end to the evil __________ that prey on us all.
The terrorists are stupid in many respects, uniting the US and Russia in their fight against them is one.
However, terrorism exists because it is so easy. Anyone willing and stupid enough to die can do it, and can do it wherever and whenever there is a chance. I don't see it going away soon.

Beautiful response. And forgive me if I sound p.c., but think of the atrocities that the muslim terrorists are committing in Africa. Burning Christian children alive and using hatchets on them. Cutting off their limbs and killing their parents in front of them.

What do you mean, "be killed"? I'm talking about "moderates" in this country, who (with one or two tiny exceptions) were remarkably quiet after 9/11--that is, the ones who weren't celebrating.
Force is definitely the answer, but remember, we are not fighting a contained country, but terrorists from around the world with the same mindset.
We can't very well exterminate the entire Middle East to solve the problem, but we are going at it piece by piece, trying to establish normalcy in regions.
