BESLAN, Russia - A group of about 30 women and children broke out of a school in southern Russia where militants were holding hundreds of people captive Friday, a news agency reported, after two loud explosions were heard and Russian commandos opened fire near the building.

The Interfax news agency said that the school's roof had collapsed and militants were shelling and firing from the building. Interfax said the hostages who broke out of the school included women and children. It was impossible to immediately verify the reports.

Two helicopters hovered overhead. An ambulance rushed from the scene and CNN reported that at least two people were wounded. On Thursday, the militants inside the school had released some 26 of the hundreds of hostages held inside the building since Wednesday.

CNBC - 5 children dead, 310 injured - 180 of which are children

I was expecting casualties to be orders of magnitude greater. I am joyful to be wrong.

May Putin avenge the dead a thousand times over.

I am not speaking about your post just to others...who seem to think that Russian terrorists are different than the animals we face. Wahasbism does not explain this.

"It's reasonable to at least ask the U.N."

No it's not. The U.N. is part of the problem, not the solution...

what would you call Sadr?

I would call him a murderer. A lot of folk in the Mid East was totally confused by this war. They know better than us, that Saudi Arabia is the problem.

Remember, GW's with the party that says it doesn't need a permission slip. The other party might not even ask for permission. The Democrats might even consider waiting for the U.N. to tell them what to do

Of course. There was a story in the Chi. Tribune today about a woman who was released, but was forbidden to take both her children -- she had to CHOOSE ONE TO LEAVE BEHIND!!

I heard about SS officers doing the same thing to Jews sent to the death camps. Enough said.

Celebrating the mininal casualties may have been premature. Sh*t.

CNN reports that among the terrorists killed are ten from Arab countries...

Religion of peace! More like religion of hatred!

You are deluded if you think there was no connection between OBL and Saddam. Even the 9/11 Commission Report has to admit there were growing ties going back a decade.

Zaquari had set up his terror network in Iraq as early as 1999. We are fighting that network today as well as terrorists from Iran. Ansar al Islam was an al Queda camp in the north fighting the Kurds on behalf of Saddam. Al Queda terrorists were trained at Salman Pak by Saddam's secret police.

While Wahhabism is a problem it is not the only Islamic group that is confronting civilization nor is the US ignoring its contribution to the problem. Saudi Arabia has been killing and jailing these scumbags as has Pakistan but there are MANY Islamic killers who have nothing to do with the Saudis.

You and MOOer can attempt to make the enemy Saudi Arabia but that is a distortion and misleading simplification of a much more complicated situation.

if you think there was no connection between OBL and Saddam.

There is connection between everyone and everyone else. OBL was (or IS) a pure Wahhabi Saudi SOB. A high ranking one. You dance around the issue and play with the facts just like the Liberals. IS means IS.

Listen Sweetheart, I don't know where you came up with this Professor crap, but it is not needed here, and is not constructive.

Not needed here, Prof? Not constructive? Neither is some clueless keyboard critic pounding away, saying nobody's taking action against the terrorists. Meanwhile hundreds of great men and women have died doing just that.

Some weren't even in underwear. Were they stripped to strip them of their dignity, or for something even more sinister?

Two commonsense reasons: one, children were not allowed to go to the bathroom and therefore soiled their clothing. Two, it was extremely hot inside the building and kids took their clothes off to keep cool.

Sorry, but there's a difference between "collateral damage" and murder.

What people here are advocating is murder, plain and simple.

As soon as this happened, I think, we all knew a dreadful outcome;

" began running from the gym.

"The terrorists were shooting them in the backs and hitting them with rifles, and therefore a decision was made to protect the children," Aslakhanov said. " - http://www.interfax.ru/e/B/0/28.html?id_issue=10699563

That does it.

Until this morning, I was going to vote Peroutka.

No matter how principled I thought that vote would be, I cannot cast it that way now.

It is only a matter of time before these terrorists try something like that in an American school/movie theater/ grocery store.

The way I see it now is that the best thing I can do to protect my family on election day is to vote to re-elect the President.

But many hostages have died. Lord have mercy

Charles DeGaulle defeated terror in Algiers with terror of his Foreign Legionnaires. But he lost the war. Terror ceases when the price of terror becomes higher for the terrorirsts than the terrorized. But it doesn't mean you win the war.

What a tragic end!

I have no words to express my rage at these terrorists targeting children.

I wish I could do anything to help our Russian brothers and sisters going through such a traumatic experience. As a father, I can't fathom the pain and desperation that parents are feeling right now.

I will continue to pray and ask God's mercy on the wounded and the remaining hostages.
