MOSCOW (AP) -- Armed men seized a school in the Russian region of North Ossetia Wednesday morning and were in a gun battle with police, news reports said. The region borders with warring Chechnya.

The seizure took place on the first day of the Russian school year, when it was likely that a large number of parents had accompanied their children to class.

The reports said the school was in the city of Beslan, which is about 10 miles north of Vladikavkaz, the capital of North Ossetia.

Vladimir Yakovlev, President Vladimir Putin's envoy for the southern region of Russia that includes North Ossetia, was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying it was unclear how many children, teachers and parents may be held in the school.

There were no immediate reports of whether the assailants were making demands or indications of who they were. Police could not immediately be reached for comment.

In 1995, Chechen rebels led by warlord Shamil Basayev seized a hospital in the southern Russian city of Budyonnovsk, taking some 2,000 people hostage. The six-day standoff ended with a fierce Russian police assault. Some 100 people died in the incident.

Kids with their parents. The school selected precisely because it was a school. Radical Islam may have gone berserk.

Seems to be a continuation of terrorist attacks on Russia going on the last few days according to BBC news at the moment. Prayers to the children, parents and teachers being held hostage. May God protect and watch over them, and help them through this ordeal.

Attackers, including some with suicide belts, seize school in Russia's North Ossetia region, officials and reports say

MOSCOW (AP) -- More than a dozen armed attackers, some wrapped in suicide-bomb belts, seized a school in the Russian region of North Ossetia early Wednesday and were in a gun battle with police, officials and news reports said.

The seizure took place on the first day of the Russian school year, when it was likely that a large number of parents had accompanied their children to class.

Sergei Vlasov, a spokesman for the Emergency Situations Ministry in Moscow, confirmed the assault and a spokesman for the Interior Ministry's southern region office said an undetermined number of hostages had been taken.

The Interfax news agency, citing Ismel Shaov, a regional spokesman for the Federal Security Service, said there were 17 attackers, both make and female, and the gang included some who were wearing suicide-bomb belts.

The attack took place in the city of Beslan, about 10 miles north of Vladikavkaz, the capital of North Ossetia, a republic that borders warring Chechnya.

There were no immediate reports of whether the assailants were making demands or indications of who they were.

However, Chechen rebels who raided a Moscow theater in 2002, seizing hundreds of hostages, included women who were heavily wrapped with explosives.

In 1995, Chechen rebels led by warlord Shamil Basayev seized a hospital in the southern Russian city of Budyonnovsk, taking some 2,000 people hostage. The six-day standoff ended with a fierce Russian police assault. Some 100 people died in the incident.

In an earlier story it was reported that Putin had been in top level discussions with Germany and France, and they were all wondering if the U.S. would join with their European allies.

What allies? They same ones who aligned with us when we were attacked?

Putin has two choices:

1) cave in and look like a massive puss

2) nuke Chechnya and say "ok, you can have you independence" and walk away from that mess

He can always go ask his French and German allies to help him invade. The French have already shown they're ready to go to war over the head scarf in school issue. Leave it to France to go to war over a fashion statement.

Yes, but remember Islam is a religon of peace. The insurgents must have gone to the school to teach the children about the value of peace. This will all end peacefully in a few hours with the Chechen insurgents linking hands in a circle and singing Kumbaya. /saracasm off.

Well anyway, it will all end in a few days.

And Putin is building an nuclear reactor in Iran.

Just wait when the rest of us get to pay the price for that gem.

"And Putin is building an nuclear reactor in Iran."

On the surface this looks very bad, but Putin also knows the GPS coordinates of all their key nuclear facilities. ;-)
