I do not doubt the sincerity of James Rassman.
However, my own experience and review of such part of the record as is available for review convinces me that Mr. Rassman is right about then Lieutenant John Kerry pulling him out of the water but wrong about Kerry heroically saving his life.
I was an Operations Officer for 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment during the first Gulf War.
I was on active duty U.S. Marine Corps Officer for over a decade.
I have watched how men behave under fire.

Thanks for the link...what a terrific perspective and commentary!
*bump* Good article. The findings are well done. Also, giving Rassmann a greaceful "way out" of his story is fully appropriate.
I printed thid article and tucked it in my copy of "Unfit for Command."
I also printed out The Kerry Files: The Young Opportunists Handbook to keep with the book.
[FR got permission to post The Kerry Files: The Young Opportunists Handbook]
Both these good articles are from the same web site.
Yes it is.
I've already e-mailed both of those commentaries to my personal list and really do appreciate you searching them out.
Just realised that only Rassmann (and Kerry) are saying that there was hostile fire. What happened to the rest, 5 members, of the crew.
His service records will prove that he is a phony. That is why he still hasn't released them. Don't you think that if he was innocent, he would have released them immediately?
Saved this article for email and future reference.

Well, the obvious answer is, he's guilty as hell.
I'm grateful to the Internet and FR, where this information can get such a wide audience.
Bump!

This article draws some very plausible conclusions about the Rassman incident.
Since Rassman and Kerry are convinced they are telling the truth, they shouldn't object to a full investigation, as the author of this column suggests. (This will never happen.)
I figured this part out already Chieftain. I figure when the boat hit the mine to other boats started firing at the shore to give their brothers in arms cover. This is the firing Rassman heard. When the units realized they were taking no return fire they stopped firing and Kerry returned to pick up the last guy in the water.
If I were in one of the other boats I sure would have opened fire until I was sure those guys in the water were safe.
10 years in the Fire Department, you protect your brothers.
At that moment I knew the man was LYING about the whole story.
Personally, I am unwilling to give him the benefit of any doubt.
