just got a slightly faster web connection and am looking to download come quality freebies ;)
What do you consier absolute "must-have" freeware programs?
All opinions greatly appreciated.
I second the nomination for spywareblaster. It doesn't clean out spyware, it keeps spyware from loading at all.
Hey, paisano, it's a new Italian dessert dish.
Spywar Blaster is essential if you have kids. It keeps them from seeing the offer to load spyware.

Ping...
What is a good cheap dialup ISP?
free is good bump.
Mozilla Firefox. For heaven's sake, get rid of IE.
Okay, this is not related to what you guys are chatting about but since all the smart guys are here, I have a question.
"Recently, for the past two or three times(I run the "maintenance wizard" on my pc weekly) I have tried to defrag my computer and it freezes up on the defrag and I have to disconnect the battery and power source and reconnect the power source and restart the computer. I run the "maintenance wizard" to scan the hard drive and correct errors and it continues to freeze up on the disk defrag...
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Kelly
Windows ME
i had the same prob.....i think you go to what's called a "mirror" site. i went to pcworld.com to get the version of spybot that updates (3.1)
Also DAEMON Tools to install and use virtual CD's, found at www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/portal/index.php
Finally, check out www.nonags.com and www.karenware.com/powertools for lots more
To shut-down your computer in a hard freeze (CTL-ALT-DEL does not work)press the off switch and hold it. It should shut down.
As far as your defrag problem, usually it is because another program starts during the defrag. You can shut down just about all your running programs by pressing CTL-ALT-DEL and END TASK (not shut down, since that shuts down the computer).
Close all open programs except explorer. If you are on an open internet line, shut down your modem so your computer is not on line and vulnerable.
If you can then defrag, I would look at all the open programs you shut down and ID the offending one. Also, use MSCONFIG to manage the programs that are opening at startup. Also, get rid of all programs in your systray except firewall, antivirus and sound.
Thanks, I'll try that. I suspect there's a damaged file somewhere in the sys...
ftp: old standby wsftp. Always have a copy of it onhand.
browser: Firefox - nuff said.
file sharing: WinMx.
game: Shisen-Sho
office pkg: Star office.
It would help to know more specifics on what one is looking for; but, those are the things that come right off the top of my head. If you're just breaking in, Go linux and save yourself some grief. lol
After 3 years, it's blocked like 75,000 intrusions, and I think it said 1500 were serious.
I just updated it yesterday, and the counter reset. Just since last night, its at 181 intrusions with 7 high rated.
Bump.
I agree with you Zone Alarm pick.
Browsers: Opera (fast) & Firefox. But some sites require IE so take a look at the MYIE2 add on to the IE engine.
WINUSCON: Turns your useless desktop into an unbelievably useful control center.
Pure Text: When copying text from net and you don't want the extra bits of html.
ScreenPrint 32: gives you the ability to print the current screen only.
Free RamXPpro: automatically recharges RAM by shoving memory into hard drive.
WordWeb:MS Word's dictionary and thesaurus is so bad you need this if you write much.
Mailwasher:edit out spam before you download to your email program.
Not free but maybe the best: ClipMate6 expands the clipboard feature to something really useful. Check it out.
I went to the site to check this out. It recommends that you back up your harddrive in case of problems. That seems a little too much work if you have 30 or so gigs on the hardgrive. I passed.
Hi, what site did you go to. Are you talking about the Cleanup program. http://cleanup.stevengould.org/
Forget backing up your hard drive. This program has nothing to do with that.
This programs gets rid of all your temporary files and cookies and totally cleans out all the junk in your computer.
Can you explain this backing up the hard drive.
What does that have to do with the cleanup program.
http://www.download.com has a lot of quality products...You can search through many reviews by users.
