Anyone who lives on the coast *ought to know* these projections are not an exact science

There were reports of some folks surfing earlier .. they needed to be rescued when they slammed into the piers

Not very bright if you ask me

I have a feeling the beautiful islands of Sanibel & Captiva might be pretty much destroyed. Direct hit at full strength. Hopefully they were completely evacuated.

I know Sanibel well, it's breaking my heart. And the Ding Darling Nature Preserve... oh man.

A radio reporter called in to the TV station and said he drove down there from Englewood. Much damage, but he said residents were walking around.

(TV station just ended local news coverage -- going to Leno now, but have update crawler on bottom of screen.)

Sorry to you also for the late reply. Your sister should have been fine. We were really spared the brunt of it. Unfortunately, our good luck is someone else's bad luck. I have a friend in North Port which is just to the north of Port Charlotte. She was scared to death. It got pretty ugly for them. Fortunately, her husband really prepared. They lost power, but they're OK.

"The NOAA 11PM prediction looks the same."

I just printed out the 5PM and 11PM, and did the old trick of putting the newer on top of the older, holding it up to a light, and aligning the lat/lon grids and state lines.

They are almost identical. If anything, it's shifted a very, very few miles to the east.

Expect that they will be changed. Perhaps a new pass was created.

Wow--watching a utility truck rolling around in donuts. No driver.

They always hit Florence.

It's a joke in our family....my sister is on the coast of Florida; I'm on the coast of Georgia. WE get the mandatory evacuations, but our relatives in Florence get the actual hurricanes!

That Ross Cavitt reproter stressed that port Charlotte wasn't expecting a category 4 hurricane and that it was supposed to be a Tampa Bay hurricane, and so people were not prepared.

I'm not going to question people's judgment, but it seems to me that if you lived on the west coast of Florida and if a hurricane was moving past your location -- even if you thought it was on the way to somewhere else -- since you would be on the LEFT side of the hurricane, you'd make some kind of preparations -- just in case.

I mean, I'm in North Carolina and I know what's going on.

I fear there is unthinkable devestation within the most affected region. I don't know if I want to go too much further into what may have happened right now.

Dear God! I have 2 sets of Great Aunts and Uncles that have mobile homes on a canal of the Peace River in Punta Gorda. My Grandparents wintered in the same place for years until their death so I'm very familiar with the area. My mom thinks her aunts and uncles were spending the summer north and don't stay in PG this time of year, I hope so.

OTOH, my mom's brother, wife and kids live in Port Charlotte and she's been unable to reach them all day.

I lived in Delray Beach FL when Andrew came through in Homestead in '92. I went through that area a couple of months later to get to Key West. It was completely leveled. It looked what I imagine a third world country would look like after a nuclear detonation.

For about the last hour reports of deaths, even substantial numbers of deaths, have been coming in. Just to be charitable, I'll assume you hadn't known that. And, now that you do, I'll also assume you will change your tone ASAP. Thanks.

What "tone" are you talking about?

You need to learn to actually read posts "ASAP" before you respond to them.

I lived in South FlA during Andrew..I also visited Sanibel Island more than once and know that storms wash incredible amount of shells up there.

What is your problem with me wanting to go there to collect shells after a storm? Is that some kind of disrespect of dead in your book?
Get a grip.

The major problem is, it sounds like a lot of people down there did not evacuate. If the core of winds hit an area with a lot of people milling around... a lot of those people are no more.

Lots of prayers going to that area of FL.
