is it a good idea to cut off water, gas, power before one evacuates

Everyone who evacuates should turn off electric at the main breaker, water, etc. Take all of your insurance info, mortgage info, passport, check book, and any other documents you need, or that are not easily replaced.

I think there will be andrew level destruction, but in a much much smaller area.

And in addition to that a much larger area of lesser destruction than Andrew had....Orlando area is getting hammered; Andrew crossed the Everglades and then hit a fairly unpopulated area of Louisiana after the big time damage.

Please, please, please, when posting areas please put a point of reference, such as southwest of Orlando, northwest of miami, etc. It is hard to know what area you all are talking about. My daughter moved to Melbourne last week, and I have not idea if these reports are near her or not. Thank you!!!!

The storm is going right through downtown Orlando. It doesn't get more specific.

Florida definitely is taking a pounding. I wish this were the last of it, but it doesn't appear to be so.

Looking at the radar.....it looks like it is going to head off into the Atlantic below Daytona Beach. What do ya'll think? Of course, then it may start rolling up the FL/GA coast.

Again, I say, this is one strange storm.

It's passing a decent distance west of MLB; I'm ICQing with a friend there right now; no hurricane force winds, but power is likely to go soon..transformer flashes. Unfortunately some tornadoes out away from the storm, though...none in Melbourne so far.

Just got home and am trying to catch up.

Brother in Jacksonville...just called him on the way home and they are expecting it to hit in less than an hour but are calm and confident all will be well.

Prayers for our Florida Freepers.

She's getting the winds and rain, for sure.

Melbourne is just east of Orlando.

It's strange for the time of year, but not really strange in the way it ended up. The storm passed over some of the warmest watter in the Atlantic system during its life cycle.

It will have a lot more difficult of a time strengthening once it is out into the Atlantic unless it can get over the Gulf Stream. Even then, the forward speed will keep it below Major Hurricane status in all likelihood.

I wonder if any rides blew over at Disneyworld?

Daylight is going to reveal a whole lot of damage everywhere.

Hey you! Got home about 5:45pm. Everything is intact! We really were incredibly fortunate this time. I am sending all of my hurricane supplies to our neighbors to the south. It's the least I can do. As I am putting everything back together, I keep repeating, "thank you, God!"

There are those who think He knows everything and, therefore, has no blind spots, but is not culpable because "knowing" is not the same as "causing." (The Aware)

Closest to part of my beliefs.

Best example is the World Series game that was cancelled in a city where homosexuality was very common (San Francisco -- 1987, 1988, or 1989 -- the supposed Bay Series between Oakland and San Francisco that was marred by an earthquake).

But I consider it to be part of His Mercy. This happened before the game started, and allowed the game to be re-scheduled. However, it was not fortunate for those on parts of the Nimitz Freeway (where the upper section flatten the lower section).

But then there are the 4 German priests who were near the center of Hiroshima at the time of the bombing that 250 scientists interviewed and wondered why they were still alive -- they should have been dead.

So trying to paint God in a black and white situation just does not work.

The Germans in World War II might still be wondering whose side God was on on June 6, 1944, when one of the worst Channel storms was hitting Normandy, and Germans KNEW the Allies where not stupid enough to enough in such bad weather.

Finally, there is Samuel E. Morrison's account of the trip across the Atlantic that Christopher Columbus could not have had more favorable conditions.

He arrived in the middle of Hurricane season in calm waters...
