This is just about the most republican area of the state. Overdeveloped for the last 25 years. Very expensive to live,and always getting beaten up in the storm season. I thankfully fled south Florida,but stayed away from the SW area because of the storm and flooding vulnerability. I live about 70 miles N.E. from Port Charlotte,but the cost of living is at least 1/3 less here,and there is no sprawl yet.
I think Tampa dodged a bullet this time.
I'm in Myrtle Beach and we've not received any evacuation notices yet......ugh!
the eye of hurricane Gloria passed right over us, we went down to the beach, the surf was amazing, clear sky, sunshine, for that period of time when the eye was over us.

I lived in Largo off of Belcher Road for about five years. the house was only 7 feet above sea level. We moved to California 14 years ago so that we would just have to deal with the earthquakes and fires.
Storm probably weakened as it transversed the Cuban interior - before it hit Havana. Increased when it got back over water.

well, the NHC is saying the highest percentage for Charley to exit Florida is now Daytona (63%).
I said to a friend last night it would come over us - when the NHC said it would go out the top of the State - that there's no way with that other front coming thru. It would push it more east. And so now it is down here.
Wind and rain with thunder although no visible lightning. But the cloud formation overhead to the west above I95 is amazing, much like the last time I saw a tornado come thru here several years ago.
So I am taking down the PC and putting it where it's gonna stay dry if the tides come up. Gotta go, so see ya'll in a few days - maybe!
The satellite real images show that it has already broken up..dispersing over central Florida...hope that it's true and the media hype is not.

Just be happy you never got "the eye" from my wife. You know there's a cold wind blowing then. Sends shivers down my spine everytime I think of it...
Because it will be 5 days at a minimum before they can start to restore power, clear trees and debris from the roads and begin to return to some semblence of normalcy.
