Mom Sent To Jail For Smoking Around Kids
POSTED: 6:43 am EDT August 13, 2004
BOWLING GREEN, Va. -- A woman was sentenced Thursday to 10 days in jail for defying a court order not to smoke around her children.
Tamara Silvius was banned last year from smoking around the youths, now ages 8 and 10, as part of a custody arrangement with her ex-husband.

The hell comment had to do with her comment on not wanting anthing to do with "being on your knees", not her smoking. There is nothing arrogant about that. She declared her position against God in that statement.
I am not attacking any industry. All I said was she should have obeyed the court order...period. I received several attacks from smokers who would have disobeyed the order.
The lady could have smoked anywhere other than around her children, what is so hard about that?
Welcome to FR.
Nanny.
ROTFLMMolonLabeShirtOff.
Here only a couple of days and involved in a major flame and pinging the AM.
YOU HAVE GOT TO BE A RETREAD OR ELSE YOU DESERVE AN AWARD..lol
What is a retread?
I'm 100% sincere
Yeah, it's a Nanny State, anti-freedom issue. Why not just turn over all kids to the State, since it's obvious that we don't trust parents to parent anymore?
Conservatives who applaud decisions like this need more education about what it means to be a free human being, and more education about the evils of governmental paternalism.
Government is NOT the answer. I will wager that THIS INCIDENT will scar the kids and the mother far more than her smoking ever did. Involving the courts when it comes to smoking around your kids is paternalistic, do-gooder nonsense.
I'm sure she cares more about her kids than you care about her kids, so why not leave her the hell alone?
Sounds like a dick of a husband to me.
And yet more idiotic rulings based on moronic secondhand-smoke propaganda.
If and when her kids sneak their first smoke, sometime, somewhere, THAT amount of tobaccy will be more than Evil Mom exposed them to. Americans are becoming supreme wimps with no backbone, and to see that thread of wimpy humanity expressing itself on FR is a disappointment, where individual liberty is supposed to be a cherished value, not some throwaway concept.
Fat kids = Diabetes.
What should we do to those parents?
Since any rational human being realizes that diabetes is far worse than any consequence of secondhand smoke, are you ready to sanction 25% of all parents? If not, why not?
We're going to need a whole slew of Evil Parents Prisons.
Since when is this a conservative tenet? Sounds like a socialist tenet. Our Bill of Rights doesn't concern 'the rights of the many'. It clarifies the rights of the INDIVIDUAL. When 'conservatives' start echoing socialist dogma, I worry about how it is you came to think of yourself as a conservative.
I've heard many anti-gun arguments based on the 'rights of the many' versus the 'whims of the few'. I'll side with the whims of the few, since whims are acceptable in a free society. Something about liberty, and the pursuit of happiness...
Fine line between righteousness and self-righteousness.
Actually, Moses did get into trouble for arrogance. He proclaimed he was responsible for water coming out of the rock, when he should have given glory to God for that miracle. God clearly chastised him for it, and made mention of it when he denied Moses entry into the promised land.
Your arrogance shows very clearly, and I suggest you look to the log in your own eye.
You say you are consistent, in that you follow the word of God. Yet, you claim to know the mind of God, by proclaiming you will not wind up in Hell.
Now, please explain to me how that is consistent with the Word of God?
Jesus said "my sheep know me and hear my voice, and the voice of another they will NOT follow"...so if someone is not sure they are going to heaven, they probably aren't.
I know that I know where I am going and there is no doubt, that is consistent with God's word!
A re-entry...you don't act like someone who has only posted 2 days.
"Every single ex-smoker I know is insufferable about how awful smoking is for you and how it'll kill you deader than a carp."
Now you know of two who aren't.
I quit smoking, but the sanctimonious, tyrannical, blue-stockinged smugness of the tobacco nazis makes me wish I could keep smoking.
Can you imagine these people equating smoking with baby-killing? Where's their common sense?
This is not the only conservative/political site on the 'Net. I just learned about this from Hannity's show when it was mentioned with the SwiftVets interview. I visited and joined right in. I see no reason to wait weeks just to meet some people's artificial standard of what constitutes a troll. :)
I catch on quickly.
You've judged and found her wanting? I thought all judgement belonged to the Lord.
Question: how did you avoid becoming a sanctimonious, self-righteous busybody? Every single ex-smoker I know is insufferable about how awful smoking is for you and how it'll kill you deader than a carp.
*****
I didn't smoke until I was 25...smoked for 10 yrs. quit cold turkey and became the above.....why? Because I wanted to smoke and if I screamed loud enough against it, maybe the want to would go away. After 13 yr. of not smoking, I caved in........I'm much better now and very much enjoy the social life around smokers, I never did want to stay away from them anyway. Bottomline....alot of ex-smokers will ALWAYS want one and hate you because you have one!! :)
Well...being statist on smoking is not going to endear you to many around here but feel free.
That's fine. I see my position as conservative common sense.
Some actions judge themselves, simple as that.
Typical female response. Tell me, do you spend your child support money on cigarettes? Smoking seems to have clouded your faculties.
