BIN LADEN, ZAWAHIRI TAPE SOON?

The surprise announcement yesterday, by Pakistan interior minister Faisal Saleh Hayat that Jamaat-e-Islami, the country's largest religious party, is harboring al-Qaida members and President Musharraf's appearance on state television, where he urged his nation to fight al-Qaida, may have something to do with this:

[Homeland Threat; INP report: "Al-Qa'ida Announces Sheikh Usama Bin Ladin, Aiman al-Zawahiri To Make Public Appearance Soon"]

[FBIS Translated Text]

Al-Qa'ida has announced that Usama Bin Ladin and Ayman al-Zawahiri will soon make a public appearance so as to pronounce a fierce battle against the United States and Europe as well as the expiry of a deadline to pull out forces from Iraq. His appearance will belie all US claims regarding his arrest or death.

A statement released by an Al-Qa'ida group, posted on the Islamic website, "Mimber Ahl-i-Sunnat Wal-Jamaa" [name as transliterated], on Thursday [12 August] says their leader Usama Bin Ladin, or his deputy Ayman al-Zawahiri, will soon make an announcement on the expiry of a deadline given to Europe to be followed by massive attacks on the United States, Europe, and other allied countries. The statement said all Al-Qa'ida "cells" [preceding word within quotation marks in English] are fully prepared and as soon as Sheikh Usama gives an order, they will attack targeted places and personalities. Through these attacks, they will tell their enemies that they are not only capable of defending themselves, but also eliminating them.

The statement adds that all Muslims have been told that Sheikh Usama or al-Zawahiri will soon appear on some satellite TV channels and announce the expiry of a deadline and a war on the Untied States and European countries. It also said the people will soon see the Al-Qa'ida chief with their own eyes. The United States claims that Usama has been arrested, "martyred," or will be arrested soon.

That this announcement appeared in print for the first time in a Karachi paper is significant for a number of reasons.

Karachi has long been and continues to be jihad central.

Karachi is where Danny Pearl was kidnapped.

Mussab Aruchi, KSM's nephew, was arrested there in connection with the June assassination attempt, also in Karachi, of Lt. Gen. Ahsan Saleem Hayat.

It was Aruchi's arrest that led to the capture of Mohammed Naeem Noor Khan, Ahmed Khalifan Ghailani, Babar Ahmad, Abu Issa al Britani, Qari Saifullah Akhtar, Fazlur Rahman Khalil, Mohammed Junaid Babar and the discovery of the Qaida plot to strike financial targets in the United States before the election: The strikes that this reputed videotape is to trigger.

It was in Karachi where the head of Banuri Madrasa, the late Mufti Nizamuddin Shamzai, introduced Usama bin Ladin to Mullah Omar during the Afghan/Soviet war.

Bin Laden is sending Musharraf a message here. I may be on the ropes but it's a rope-a-dope.

Let's pray it's just more Qaida bluster.

One thing is certain though. What's got Musharraf on the warpath is the very thing he dreads the most and doesn't dare risk: A mega-attack on America which has been coordinated, if not planned, from within Pakistan by ultras sheltered by Jamaat-e-Islami.

The thread activity was almost nil. Barely 100 posts per day over the weekend. No reason to be tired or defensive. The activity is still very low. Personally, I'm spending a little time in the evening enjoying the gymnastics. The Olympics could very well explain the reduced activity on this thread. Hopefully, it doesn't mean we are any less vigilant.
