To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger. "Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix." With the nation on high alert for al-Qaida terrorists, the Department of Homeland Security is putting its border officers through "etiquette" classes to soften their image and make them less threatening to arriving foreign immigrants, WorldNetDaily has learned. |

Putin, Chirac, Schroeder to meet at end-August (8/18/04)
www.chinaview.cn 2004-08-18 22:21:26 MOSCOW, Aug. 18 (Xinhuanet) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet French President Jacques Chirac and German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder at the end of the month, Russian presidential press-secretary Alexei Gromov said Wednesday.
The summit will be held on August 30-31 in Russia's Black Sea resort of Sochi and the three leaders will discuss "crucial international issues," Interfax quoted Gromov as saying.
Russia, France and Germany -- the main European countries whichopposed the US-led war against Iraq -- tried hard but failed to prevent the US-British coalition from staging military attacks on Iraq early last year.
During their summit meeting in April last year, held in St. Petersburg, Putin, Schroeder and Chirac called for a central role for the United Nations in the post-war reconstruction of Iraq.
Schroeder and Putin are close friends. The Russian president was the only national leader invited to the German chancellor's 60th birthday party in Hanover in April.
Russia and France have also enjoyed historic ties, with their relations growing stronger in recent years. Enditem

Putin Orders Major Defense Shake-Up (8/17/04)

I did see the amber alert and found that bizarre because it just listed the counties and had no information about the child or abductor?
Yes, that post was particularly scary.
Someone mentioned in the last few days (or I read it somewhere?) that terrorists set up their "temporary" websites used to relay messages and they often have a web address that consists of a string of numbers or random characters.
I have been getting spam email from a fradulent "SunTrust". There is a real Sun Trust that warns of the fraud spam on their web site. The spam is trying to get banking info. I just talked to someone from the real Sun Trust and they said this spam is coming from somewhere in Asia. They also knew nothing of the hidden code that follows.
The point is (sorry for rambling) when viewing the source code for the spam this is what I got:
area coords="0, 0, 646, 437" shape="rect" href="http://%36%39%2E%31%34%36%2E%35%34%2E%31%30%34:%38%37/%73%74/%69%6E%64%65%78%2E%68%74%6D">in 1861 in 1917 Just the contrary in 1853 and make them better? Michael Jordan when the Geena Davis Illinois man over there Paula Jones On behalf of... whats going on Valetine's Day
If you tweak with the email ifself (highlighing a certain portion and drap the mouse) the Michael Jordon, etc. sentence pops up at the bottom of the screen.
I know the M. Jordon sentence doesn't make sense, but, when do terrorists make sense. This jibberish is not viewed by just reading the email itself. The jibberish is hidden.
I just talked to someone from the real Sun Trust and they said this spam is coming from somewhere in Asia. They also knew nothing of the hidden code.
Weird. Thanks for letting me vent.
Putin, Chirac and Schroeder.
That they're meeting so close to the RNC convention makes me nervous.
Ambulances on Alert
(snip)Health-Care Professionals Warned
These cases prompted very serious concern, and in the state of New Jersey, Attorney General Peter Harvey issued a written alert to law enforcement agencies.
"Within the past week, the Office of Counter-Terrorism received three reports of suspicious activity concerning ambulances," New Jersey Infrastructure Advisory Bulletin No. 143 began. "The most recent incident involved an individual who attended an open-house at an ambulance squad in Middlesex County.
"The man, who claimed he was from Pakistan and a physician, asked a series of questions to the squad members that related exclusively to the operation of the emergency vehicles, including the speed at which the vehicles responded to calls and the use of the lights and sirens," it said."The individual appeared very nervous, did not ask about patient care, and left the premises when asked to complete a membership application." Chemical Spill Causes Brief Evacuation at ORNL (Tenn - Oak Ridge National Laboratory - 8/18/04)
August 18, 2004 OAK RIDGE, Tenn. (AP)-- Officials at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory allowed hundreds of workers to return to work shortly after 10:00 Wednesday morning.
The workers were evacuated from four buildings after what Energy Department officials say was a small chemical spill.
A lab technician dropped a beaker that held about 100 milliliters of a gas odorizer about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday. The noxious smell was spread by the air handling system. The Energy Department says no one was hurt.

"Manchester Airport Evacuated (UK - 8/18/04)
Wed 18 August, 2004 19:12 LONDON (Reuters) - Police have briefly evacuated a terminal at Manchester Airport while bomb experts verify a suspicious bag.
"Terminal Two was evacuated at 4:35 p.m. (1535 GMT) because a suspicious package was found and the bomb squad were called, but they've now left and things are returning to normal," a spokeswoman for Manchester Airport told Reuters on Wednesday.
Hmmmm. I mentioned something earlier about it being too quiet.
Can I take that back?
Michael Jordan = Chicago
Illinois = Chicago
Valentine's Day = Chicago (as in Valentine's Day massacre 1929 Al Calpone)
Wonder what they are discussing.....
Wonder if China is ramping up threats toward Taiwan?
Most of the sentence structure problem is the machine translation, even the best programs screw up the message pretty badly.
Only if it will make things quiet down again! These things do seem to come in waves...first nothing and than a spat of odd occurances.

2004-08-18 19:10 * RUSSIA * AIR DEFENCE * SOC * COMMANDER *
RUSSIA TO DEPLOY NEW ANTI-TERRORIST AIR DEFENCE SYSTEM AROUND MOSCOW
MOSCOW, August 18 (RIA Novosti)
We have to put into service an effective combat system with a 40-to-50-seconds response time and this system is available," Yury Solovyov being in charge of the special operations command (SOC), said at a press-conference when asked about measures to be taken to learn from the September 11 experience in the United States.
He noted that a definite legal basis is required for introducing of such system into the inventory.
The flight time from Vnukovo airport to the centre of Moscow is approximately one minute and therefore the prevention of attacks like 9/11 call above all for the work of airports' special services, said Mr. Solovyov.
He also reported that flying vehicles of adjacent states keep challenging Russia's air-defence capacity all the time. For instance, some time ago a Boeing, which took off from Frankfurt-am-Main ceased producing identification signals at the approaches to the Russian Federation air boundaries.
"I took the decision to prevent this Boeing from penetrating our space after it failed to get in touch with us and ordered fighters take off," said Mr. Solovyov. Boeing instantly resumed its communication.
Touching upon the SOC's fighting capacity, the commander said that the force would respond adequately to any action on the part of a provisional enemy. "We are in possession of adequate forces and means to repel initial aggression," said Mr. Solovyov.
The SOC incorporates the 16th air army stationed in the Moscow suburbs of Kubinka and two air-defence corps deployed in Rzhev, Tver Region, and Balashikha, the Moscow suburbs, with a total strength of 50,000 men, according to Mr. Solovyov. Up-to-date technology, including MIG-29, MIG-31, MIG-25, SU-24 and SU-27, are now operational at Russian aircraft units.
The electronic warfare forces organic to the SOC have got three-coordinate radar stations as well as the newest automatic control systems enabling supervision over troops and armaments.
Mr. Solovyov observed that NATO's expansion eastward and, in particular, the placement of F-16 fighter-jets on combat duty in the countries recently admitted to NATO do not necessitate any change in the SOC combat duty schedule.
"Besides, we are constantly in contact with the Air defence and Air Force of Belarus," said Mr. Solovyov.
The Special Operations Command was set up on the basis of the Moscow air defence and air force district in 2002
