Keyes Lags Behind Obama In CBS Poll (Osama 67% Keyes 28%)
CBS 2 Chicago ^ | August 9, 2004

CHICAGO (CBS 2) Illinois' senate race is heating up with both Democrat Barack Obama and new Republican candidate Alan Keyes in town pressing the flesh and warming up to voters.

The Republican candidate in this race may just be getting started, but according to an exclusive new CBS 2/Newsradio 780 poll, Keyes has a long way to go. 67 percent of Illinois voters prefer Democrat Obama; 28 percent would choose Keyes.

Keyes and his supporters were feeling the heat of the August sun as he announced for U.S. Senate at a crowded rally in Arlington Heights. Our exclusive voter opinion survey shows Obama generating another kind of heat.

Obama's lead in our CBS 2/Newsradio 780 Survey was most pronounced among women voters, 74 percent to 21percent for Keyes. Among men, it was 59 percent to 36 percent.

There was no surprise in strongly Democratic Chicago: 79 percent for Obama, 16 percent for Keyes.

But in the heavily Republican collar counties, it was Obama with 62 percent, Keyes with 34 percent. . Even downstate, 56 percent of those polled preferred Obama to 38 percent for Keyes. The results were almost the same in rural areas: 57 percent to 39 percent.

Virtually every Democrat we talked to favored Obama. Among independent voters, 64 percent chose Obama, 30 percent chose Keyes. Even among Republicans, 27 percent defected to Obama, 67 percent chose Keyes.

White voters went 62 percent to 32 percent for Obama; black voters by a margin of 89 percent to 10 percent.

The poll was conducted by Survey USA this past Friday and Saturday. It is accurate to within plus or minus four percentage points.

RWR, just like Bart Simpson, go to the blackboard and write "Osama is not Obama" 500 times.

Or do I have that backwards? The names are just sooo similar.

There's no official party registration in IL, so it gets pretty tricky.

"Keyes should find out whats's important to the people of the state he wants to represent - anything else is just being a whore."

God forbid that Keyes should get to the Senate and just represent Constitutional principles.

So what does Obama have to gain by agreeing to multiple debates?

Not a single thing, at this point. All he'd be doing is giving Keyes free publicity & recognition, and risking a screwup on his own part.

As I suspected, Keyes demonstrated he is not really serious about this campaign.

He just agreed to run yesterday for crying out loud. I think a lot of the negative posts are coming from the anti-christians on FR.

it's a fiasco for Obama, IMO.

I just seen Keyes on Hannity and Colms. Obama was invited but did not want to come on. Also Keyes said that at first Obama wanted 6 debates with the republican candidate. Now that Keyes has entered the race, that debate offer is down to 4 or 2.

I think once the residents of Illinois start learning more about Barrack Obama, the more the race will tighten up.

Actually, it will be very difficult for Keyes to beat O(s)bama at this late date given the overwhelming positive input from the socialist press and the commie rat party at the "Carrie" coronation.

However, I believe that Keyes is more than able to put Osama in his place and expose him for the twit that he is. Win or lose the election, there will be no "draw" when it comes to the debate and the issues. Nothing more than an empty suit espousing socialism in its dying throes.

Blessings, Bobo

Don't count Keyes out.

He is going to really liven things up in Illinois, and Mr. clean socialist/leftist Obama might just have one helluva fight on this hands.

This is set up with the blessing, I would hope, of the National GOP, to get Barack (I wouldn't want to misspell his last name) on record with his extreme left positions. Future Defocratic plans for Barack REQUIRE that the GOP start into him NOW! That and the fact he did nothing in the Illinois Senate until he decided to run.

Keyes will make it even more fun than Da Coach could have!

Barack and Eddie Haskell the two bolsheviks from Illinois. Lincoln must be furiously pulling at his beard!

Alan Keyes is only getting started so yes, his position now will be far behind. But face it, in this race, a black man has a better chance against Obama. That Alan Keyes, a man who is eloquent and has national credentials is an extreme bonus. Alan Keyes would win debates against many opponents, not just an upstart like Obama, who gives Keyes all kinds of socialist red-meat to work with.

Dane sez:

"So you are saying that tax cuts, abortion, school choice, are national issues and should not be discussed in a local or state election."

fom sez:

"No, I'm saying Dr Keyes should find out which of those issues resonate with the voters of Illinois & then campaign on them. Seems pretty basic to me. Maybe Illinois has more ag issues than Maryland - just might be."

I sez:

fom, Stop it. You are violating FR rules. It is expressly forbidden to do anything to cause Dane and I to agree. Cease and desist or shall have to report you.

Dane, I suggest that we both rethink our position. I don't think that we've ever agreed before. ;-)

I have no doubt that Illinois would gladly have elected Hillary over a Rick Lazio type.

Going to Arlington was brilliant, he went right into the heart of the beast, I'll bet Obamma is is shaking in his boots. Lots of black people are very religious, the difference between Keyes and Obamma is going to be like night and day.

I am simply disgusted with the State GOP leadership, which needs a major purge.

I'm not familiar with the IL GOP org as such. Can you describe it a little for me. Are the leadership elected, appointed or just how do they get the positions they have? Where in your opinion do they fit into the political spectrum.... far right, right, center, left, far left.....

Thanks for any input you may can share.
