We'll punish Bushes at the polls, immigrants promise
Immigrant voters will show their displeasure with the Bush brothers for not doing enough to help undocumented migrants become legal, advocates say.
Leaders of several immigrant and labor rights organizations in South Florida on Thursday accused President Bush and his brother, Gov. Jeb Bush, of failing to keep promises to help undocumented migrants legalize their presence.
At a Miami news conference, speakers for the groups said immigrants who have become American citizens will vote against candidates who have not helped advance proposals that would enable illegal migrants to achieve legal status. The proposals are two congressional bills that would put migrant farmworkers and children of undocumented migrants on a track to legal residency and a plan to grant temporary residency to undocumented migrants from Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
''Immigrants are paying attention and, come Election Day, they will cast their ballots for public officials who deliver on their promises, not for those who continue to make empty promises,'' said Eliseo Medina, executive vice president of Service Employees International Union.
Taylor Gross, a White House spokesman, said President Bush is working with Congress in shaping his guest-worker program. Jacob DiPietre, a Gov. Bush spokesman, said his boss was studying the proposal.
Activists at the news conference said President Bush had offered to grant temporary work permits to illegal migrant workers but had done little to advance the project, and had also not objected to Republican lawmakers in Congress blocking a separate bill giving residency to migrant farmworkers.
They also took Gov. Bush to task for not following up on his recent statement that he would be ''inclined'' to support temporary protected status for Haitians. Immigrant advocates said the offer should also be extended to Dominicans.
DiPietre said Gov. Bush realizes only the federal government can grant temporary status.
Because you are polish and trying to do it legally. Mexico thinks it has specialy rights and apparently some here in our govt. do as well.
Actually It's not so simple to do it legally. It's very HARD to get immigration VISA to USA.
I think immigration is pretty easy --- the USA takes in far more legal immigrants than any other nation does. We've doubled our population in less than 50 years --- through massive immigration. How much easier should we have to make it?

Excellent point that I think gets overlooked.
But you might be right --- it's very easy for Mexicans to immigrate here -- which is why they are the overwhelming portion of our legal immigrants --- but maybe not very easy for others who might have more education, work ability, and knowledge of our language.

No it isn't. I don't know current regulations, but some time ago I was a little interested and I heard that if some doesn't have close family in USA (parents or children) or doesn't have... at least 100.000 $, he has very little chance to get immigration VISA.
Sorry, but If I had 100.000 $, I would choose rather Bahama Islands.

I thought you had to be a citizen of US to vote??? So why aren't we showing drivers licenses, and if you don't have one...a birth certificate showing you were US born, and if you don't have that a green card. Othewise you don't vote!!
Absentee ballots must have those attached and certified by Courthouse. I have no problem with voting being a little more complicated....NO felon voting either. There should be a program of all voter names being run through the computer with SS numbers and if a felon conviction comes up when matched against felon lists in computer...OH well out goes the vote!
Family connections should be thrown out fast ---- and let immigrants come in on their ability to be useful to this country.
I don't believe that the article is saying that illegals are going to vote to punish Bush (although some illegals do vote), but rather it is saying that relatively recent immigrants who are now citizens and sympathize with the illegals will vote to punish Bush. That would generally include former illegal immigrants who have been amnestied and now have citizenship status as well as legal immigrants generally from the same countries as the illegals. For example, those represented by groups such as La Raza (and there are many more).
I am not specifically sure what you are addressing there. I do know that part of the FTAA is that the poorest countries in that agreement will have priority in our govt. contracted projects.
The United States has taken in thousands of South Africans over the years, even before 1994. The US isn't their only option and most are preferring to go to the UK and to Australia and New Zealand.
