Indeed. First off, this is the first time that we will see black candidate versus black candidate for a national level office. Secondly, this will attract big time national attention. Thirdly, a lot of folks who had written this race off will be forced to take a look. Finally, the question of whether or not Keyes is truly a sacraficial lamb will have to be addressed.

He looks like he might have been raised in a petri dish labeled "Black DNC Candidate."

BWAHAHAHA, I agree. I think some Kennedy genes got spread around Arkansas and Illinois. And Obama is half-black. I better get myself some tinfoil, I'm scaring myself.

But let's not get carried away with trying to depict it other than what it is -- opportunism.

That's absurd.

Opportunism: Main Entry: op·por·tun·ism
Pronunciation: -'tü-"ni-z&m, -'tyü-br> Function: nounbr> : the art, policy, or practice of taking advantage of opportunities or circumstances often with little regard for principles or consequences
Look, the GOP cannot lose this seat to a Democrat. The stakes are too high. Days ago, this seat was as good as dead for the GOP. Now, with Keyes, there's chance they could win. A slim chance, but better than what they would have had.

Knowing this, if Keyes had turned them down when they approached him, he would be hurting all that he has been fighting for--protecting marriage, fighting abortion rights, preserving religious liberty. The loss of a single Republican-held Senate seat at this point would set back the conservative agenda back quite a bit, particularly considering judicial appointments.

For Keyes to help out here is no less principled than Cheney getting around the residency snag to accept the VIP opportunity. Cheney did that for the good of the country, and I'm glad he did.

Sorry. I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but sometimes we have to face the truth.

Bullcr@p. Defeatism is your game. There's no way you would ever pull the lever for Keyes. He's too much of a 'true believer' and an anti-lavender.

ALL politics is SO corrupt in Illinois, that a lot of us will consider it a PLUS that Keyes has no political past in Illinois. Maybe he's the guy to start cleaning this bi-partisan PIG STY.

If he does then good and it may help President Bush which is my objective.

I think you're right; it will help Bush possibly take Illinois, which Kerry has probably to this point already counted in his column. Let's see where this goes, at the least, without sabotaging the campaign before it's started.

I wish Keyes well in the election, if he decides to accept the invitation.

Very gracious.

Thank you from this Keyes supporter.

The "rats" are not going to spend anything on this race. Look for the next poll. Keyes down 2-1, and it won't change much from that.

KEYES ON THE TICKET WILL BRING CONSERVATIVES WHO WERE CONSIDERING STAYING HOME TO THE POLLS IN *DROVES*

That's what it seems like is likely to happen --- if the people who aren't pro-abortion liberals, now they have someone to vote for. If it was going to be that other candidate why would they bother to vote?

A. "Is the Candidate who has lived here but agrees with me on nothing more likely to represent my views in the Senate than the one who agrees with me on everything but doesn't live here?"

B. "Is my hunger for pork more important than voting for a man who most closely reflects my views on the great issues of the day?"

Very well stated.

If Keyes is the candidate, he has my vote.

Do you think that Keyes will get to speak at the GOP convention? Prime-time would be ideal.

Totally reasonable, but that is not in the law of the state of Illinios.

No argument from this corner. Keyes is well within his rights according to Illinois law. If I were a resident of Illinois I would vote for Keyes over an acknowledged liberal(Obama).

I do have reservations about the manner in which his selection came about. I agree with many that Illinois should not have been in the position to seek help outside of the state.

Keyes enters this race not as first choice, nor as second. Ditka's flirtation with a Senate run sapped the brief Republican momentum that had been building at rumor he would enter. Obama was considered to have come off a successful speech on a national stage. Keyes is not a resident of Illinois and enters the race only a few months before the general election. He will have to contend with his own words about H. Clinton.

These are the realities he faces.

I'm in favor of Obama being defeated, though have my doubts given the above as to Keyes chances. It'll be interesting to observe the reaction of the residents of Illinois to this newest development in the race for the Senate.

I enjoyed watching Mr. Keyes debate in the Republican Primary the last go around... My choice was always Bush but Keyes would have been my second choice...
