Kerry Tells Black Voters He Shares Their Dreams

Presidential candidate John Kerry on Sunday courted the black vote, a major Democratic constituency that polls show he has yet to excite, by assuring churchgoers he shared their "common future, hopes and dreams."

The Roman Catholic senator from Massachusetts visited the nondenominational First Church of God in Columbus where Bishop Timothy Clarke told an overwhelmingly black congregation of more than 2,500 that he would not endorse Kerry or President Bush, but urged his parishioners to get out and vote.

Kerry's introduction drew a protest from one member who stood and shouted, "Sit down ... you big phony," before he was hustled out clutching a Bible.

At the third stop on his trek to the Democratic convention in Boston where he will be formally nominated as Bush's opponent in the Nov. 2 election, Kerry quoted scripture, black poet Langston Hughes and President John Kennedy.

"It is written, what does it mean my brother if you have faith if there are no deeds? Faith without works is dead," he said, a subtle slap at Bush without mentioning the president's name.

Kerry described his own candidacy as a "brief fragile moment that God gave us on earth to make a difference."

"This is our journey, not my journey," he said. "I came here this morning to praise his name and share with you our common future, our humanity, our hopes and our dreams."

The Democratic candidate has won around 90 percent of the black vote in recent presidential elections, but at issue is how many members of that key constituency Kerry can turn out.

Opinion polls have shown that Kerry, a blueblood New Englander who attended private schools, graduated from Yale, volunteered for the Vietnam War and has served almost two decades in the Senate, has yet to excite his African-American base.

BIG LEAD BUT LITTLE ENTHUSIASM

A BET/CBS News poll of 986 black Americans released last week found that Kerry led Bush, the Republican incumbent, by eight to one, but a majority had yet to feel a great deal of enthusiasm about their candidate. Most said they were just "satisfied" having Kerry atop the ticket.

Democrats are hoping a higher minority turnout, coupled with support from working white families, will help land southern states such as Florida in the Democratic camp and tip northern industrial states such as Ohio, Michigan and Pennsylvania in their favor.

Most Democrats also believe their road to the White House passes through Ohio, a critical battleground state. No Republican has won the presidency without winning Ohio.

A poll published on Sunday in the Columbus Dispatch showed Bush and Kerry running neck and neck. The survey, with a margin of error of plus or minus two percentage points, put Bush at 47 percent, Kerry at 44 per cent and independent candidate Ralph Nader at 2 percent.

Despite millions of dollars spent on advertising by both camps, the poll's results mirrored those of a Dispatch survey published on April 2.

Later on Sunday, Kerry was holding a "front porch" discussion at home of Jessie and Janet Aikens where he planned to speak about the U.S. economy, creating jobs and cutting middle class taxes.

Despite the recent improvement in unemployment numbers and other economic indicators, Ohio has been hit particularly hard by the flight of work overseas, especially in the manufacturing industry.

"These jobs lost are not abstract numbers," Kerry said in remarks prepared for delivery. "They are our neighbors. They are our families and they are wondering how they're going to provide for their children, pay the bills and make ends meet."

Imagine someone "clutching" a Bible in Church??? At the Church of Socialism they don't have Bibles only Red Books. If the Blacks stay home it is a vote for W which will happen!

Pray for W and Our Troops

"It is written, what does it mean my brother if you have faith if there are no deeds? Faith without works is dead,"

I don’t this guy understands this quote… its as much a call to the individual to act in faith when the way may seem blocked that God will open up an provide the way….

Like time when you don’t eve want to get out of bed because all hope in lost so what the use….. get up and ACT in faith that God win open the doors and provide the way

Acting in Faith is not sitting on you butt waiting till God provides…

It not deliberating go out looking to other to provide… there not god…..

And it’s not you thinking your god and your works will provide to other replacing god….. Kerry is of the state is god camp…. That is not Faith with Works

Deeds is getting up and walking out when a "false prophet" steps into the pulpit.

If one was vocal and got up and left, wonder how many others were thinking the same thing?

Kerry Tells Black Voters He Shares Their Dreams

That's part of the problem that black America has with the Democratic Party. Instead of dreaming, black America should end their 70 year association and infatuation with Democrats and return to the GOP fold. The party of Lincoln offers the best chance for real change within black America. After investing 40 years and $7 trillion in liberal government policies, its quite obvious you can't force equality on a free and open society. Its time Americans reinvested in the individual and advanced traditional conservative values for all US citizens.

>>Is it just me, or does his quoting scripture turn your stomach?<<

No, it's me too. Especially choosing the Scripture about faith without works. Now, why is it only clear to me that while comparing Bush and Kerry, it is Bush who honors that Scripture? Bush was the one who implemented 'faith-based initiatives' that allowed churches and religious organization to better perform their good samaritan programs with a little help from gov't funds.... as long as the program was for the full benefit of the peope. Now, what exactly has Kerry EVER done in the way of public service? Kiss ass to remain a senator?

Let me add

Jesus told the cripple man to believe and walk … he did not carry him the rest of his life and leave him cripple

Jesus feed the 5000 with bread and fishes once while they sat after that...they had to act in faith that God had and will always provide to those that believe in God (not the world) have faith in God’s word(not the worlds)and Act and Work in that faith in God’s word (not the worlds)for there lives

… That’s faith with works...

Extra warning: this is a high-volume ping list.

Why didn't Kerry quote us some of Hughes's other works.

"Listen, Christ,
You did alright in your day, I reckon —
But that day's gone now.
They ghosted you up a swell story, too,
Called it Bible —
But it's dead now."

Again

Everytime Kerry has spoken in a black church, he has consistently misspoken scripture, misspoken christian doctrine, and given dumb messages. His theological knowledge is glaringly lacking. Note his explanations or conflictions about abortion and conception...my point. The black churches are getting tired of listening to his crap. They are starting see that he has no real message for them beside.... Duh I'm here. He obviously went to the same place for his theological training as Rev Jesse Jackson (another great religious faker)...ask Jesse what church he preaches in? The church of Jesse Jackson. By the way let not forget Rev Al Sharpton. Some one has advised Kerry that the best way to the blacks vote is through the black church, but he missed the important part where you got to really really know your stuff before you open your mouth from the pulpit. His faking is sickening...Thank GOD one member got up said enough. I hope Kerry continues this, he will only chase away more black voters.

>>"It is written, what does it mean my brother if you have faith if there are no deeds? Faith without works is dead,"<<

Hey John..... you can demonstrate to the world the real meaning of that Scripture if you would simply tell your constituents: "I am proud to be a Catholic and am devout to my faith. I would love to be your representative in our federal government, but that would mean that I would insist on the repeal of Roe v Wade and let's finally put a stop to infanticide once and for all. I realize that this goes against my political party's platform, but my moral conviction and faith in God is more important."

Langston Hughes was a communist. No surprise to see Lurch quoting him.

You have to remember that President Bush hit a grand slam when he spoke to the NUL Friday. Bush ripped the heart out of leftists when he openly questioned blacks' committment to the Dems. The DemocRats and so-called black leaders are in full panic mode. Lots of blacks are dissatisfied with Kerry; though they won't vote for Bush en masse they'll likely stay home or a small percentage of them will vote for Bush, which will be helpful in battleground states.

"Faith without works is dead," he said

A beautiful and meaningful verse when used in the pure, Biblical context.

However, not surprisingly, I remember this as an oft used verse quoted by televangelist Robert Tilton when he's trying to solicit money from his viewing audience.

Not unlike how Kerry is using the pulpit of churches to solicit votes. The lowest of the low, in my opinion.

As long as I have lived in this country (71 and 2/3 years so far, Good times come and good times go and so do bad times. People get good jobs-people lose good jobs. People find new jobs, some better and some worse than those they lost. If the jobs are worse, they keep looking for better jobs while they support themselves at the so/so job.

THe whiners sit down on their asses and mutter things like: the guvment oughta! the guvment oughta! These are the lazy and useful idiots that the Dims cater to, and take for granted. They vote democrat over and over and are too absent minded to remember that the dems are making the same promises they have been making for 75 years.

Hey fools! If the Dems kept their promises, you would all be living in hog heaven and the democrats wouldn't have a damn thing to run on.

Republicans want everyone of you stupid sonovabitches to be as rich as John Kerry, Sorous, Donald TRump and John Edwards. THe democrats scheme to keep you chained to the anchor of poverty. Their existance depends upon you thinking that you need them, when in fact it is the other way around.

It's not clear to me who the church "hustled out" the door. For a minute I thought they ejected Kerry from the church. If not....a grave injustice was done to the man who could see clearly.
