Eddy Merckx, a Belgian, matched the record in 1974 and failed to break it the next year when a French fan injured him with a punch in the liver. Bernard Hinault, a Frenchman, won his fifth in 1985 and was second in his final year, 1986. Miguel Indurain, the Spaniard who won five Tours consecutively, faltered in the rain and cold in 1996 and retired at the end of that season.

Speaking of male preferences, I saw a report on FOX today. An editor from Men's Health?, maybe Men's Fitness? Anyway the guy said...Armstrong is considered the world's most fit athlete. He has the largest lung capacity ever measured. A heart that is 1/3 larger than normal and a resting pulse rate of 32. Pretty amazing.

Maybe, poster #60 is jealous. What I don't UNDERSTAND is if you "DON'T" like someone, why in the hell are you reading a thread about him, let alone posting on it.

He has accomplished a remarkable feat. I doubt that there are many of us who could average their speed over even 3 miles without puking our guts out. As for myself, I usually sluff off with my bike riding in the winter, but since getting more serious this summer, I have dropped 13 pounds so far. I am only up to 17 miles max distance so far, but I can ride up to 30 mph for short distances - longer if it is downhill ;-).

One last comment. I only ask that we have ONE MORE TEXAN coming out the victor this year and I want to see that victory on November 2nd, 2004.

The perennial choice of the record setter. My sentiment is always for a champion to keep a streak going as long as he can, but that's assuming he still enjoys his sport. Does Lance have a life outside of cycling?
