You personally do not need to feel guilty. Nobody is carrying your water. As far as guilt by association, well, I'm going to do my level best to dissuade you of that silly notion.
There is no reason not to hold out hope of change for the better. Try not to lose sight of the fact that conservatives have to battle the detrimental effects of thirty years, successive generations, of damage done by the policies of previous administrations in their bigoted pursuit of the so-called "Great Society". Change isn't going to happen overnight. The lie that conservatives are greedy racist monsters has been told so many, many times. I've heard it my whole life and I'm not a young man anymore.
Frankly, I thought it was a very powerful speech, and I'm glad the Urban League gave him the opportunity to say it. Some will get it; others won't. However, as more and more blacks become successful in their endeavors they'll lead by example, and the change will come.
the funny thing is that by skipping the NAACP, Bush creating more interest in this speech, thereby getting more attn, and giving to to the NAACP!
Good point. Great speech IMO!
The idea of taking the A_A vote for granted has already been planted....Remember when the church leaders and their congregations picketed Jesse's group last month in Chicago....Now it need to be repeated again and again....Are they taking YOUR vote for granted? WOuld make great signs for a convention freep.
I am not hopeless about all of this but the fact remains that blacks have had a phoenix like rise in affluence and middle class enrichment and enfranchisement yet their voting habits are virtually the same as since JFK and the new affluent black middle class is no more likely to reject pandering than Sugar Ditch dwellers.
I have hope but I don't think blacks need whites to fix them. They will have to change their culture and on their own.
And they will have to want that.
However, Bush's speech was of course much better than the Dem alternative is. He at least tries to talk off the plantation.
I think the black conservatives here would know why they chose the high road.....probably just because they know right when they see it.
You're welcome!
