NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Since 2000, developer id Software has told the world the next installment of "Doom," the game that kicked off the action genre, would ship "when it's done."

Good news, gamers: It's done. In the lexicon of the industry, "Doom 3" has gone gold. That means with id Software's work done, publisher Activision is duplicating copies to ship to retail. What it all boils down to is you'll be able to pick up a copy at retail on Aug. 5, though some stores could start selling the game as early as Aug. 3.

Re: I remember with Doom 2 you could find all sorts of mods where people had replaced the heads of demons and other monsters with Clinton and other figures.

I played a Bevis and Buthead mod that replaced every sound in the game with audio clips from the show. Funniest damn thing.

I played the original DOOM a lot. I'm into World War II first persons now, but I'm waiting for Half-Life 2, the first was the best I've played with a story line.

Wolfenstein 3D brings back fond memories for me. Reminds me of days when home computers were still a new concept and I was one of the first on my block to have one. I played that game for hours. Then Doom came along and I was instantly hooked. After that came Quake, around 1995 I believe.

Then I got hooked on political forums like this one and I haven't played a game since.

Still got the original disks from all that stuff around somewhere.

I have a pretty fast system with a great video card. However, I own "Far Cry" and it humbles my system. Great game though, I even bought it legit, go figure!

Wow, I've got Far Cry, still in the box, and you're giving me all kinds of warm fuzzies that I can play it adequately on my home system...Athlon 2000 XP/ATI 9500 Pro...

Last I checked, NewEgg didn't have the X800 either, I've been looking for it too. Pricy though.

What company would that be, if I may inquire? Public or private party? I'm a DIY when it comes to pc's but that's about what I'd spend on a sweet system so if someone else can do it for the same price, have at it.

Oh, it's a little shop by a mall 15 miles from my house. I think it's called PC LAND, but I couldn't tell ya right now (I'm at work). I don't think it's a national chain, though.

There should be similar shops around you; I've seen them everywhere. If you go, make sure you have the specs you want and have the salesperson print you out a list of the system's specs. When I did, the guy told me that the price is set in stone once a printout is requested. Ask about warranties as well.

I can run it on full graphics, but when you enter enclosed environments, the texture and lighting crap out. I have an Athlon 2500 Barton, with a FX5700 card with 128 meg on it and 1 gig of memory and a Geforce based motherboard. (and a hell of a lot of fans in that box!)

Sometimes you just gotta be bad. My brother and I played Knights of the Old Republic. Once as a Light Jedi and once as a Dark Jedi. Light side was sugar coated. Playing as a big bad meany Dark Side Jedi was simply Evil.

The problem with playing darkside in KOTOR was that you ended up having to play an antisocial jerk who lived to be hated by everyone he/she encountered. As such, I didn't find playing darkside to be very palatable. I'd much rather have played darkside as a scheming, manipulative SOB who got everyone to just love him for his own selfish ends -- kind of like a Darth Bill Clinton. To me, that would be much more "realistic" for someone who is looking to become a powerful Sith leader.

That said, KOTOR is a remarkable game. It's not open ended, which some people think is a bad thing, but it's probably the best realization of the old idea of an "interactive novel" or "interactive movie" I have seen. It is very immersive, and although you always eventually get to the same point, lightside or dark (with minor ending variations), it's an oddly compelling game, with some of the best voice acting and NPC subplots I've seen. The redemption of Yuthura subquest for instance (if you manage to work things so that you meet her back on Dantooine) is very, very well written and in its own way quite moving. So is Jolee Bindo's story.

It's one of those games that, for what it is, got everything just about perfect. Some people want it to be something it's not, but that's a different problem. Unfortunately, LucasArts has made sure that Bioware made the thing almost impossible to mod, but there are some dedicated hackers who are working hard to crack that. I think all they have left to crack is the modelling, which is the hardest.

Morrowind rocks. You're right, its so much easier (and more fun) to go hacknslash. Though, it was fun to play BG2 as a spellcaster, THAT was fun at the final battle where chaos ensued.

Yea, my friend had that. We used to play summer/winter olympics, karateka, etc.. Those olympics games were so lame, I think he broke a joystick every week playing that.

I love Karateka, I haven't played it for a long time until I got one of those controllers with a lot of the old games in it. I think it is called "Power Joy" and it also has "Dig Dug," "Paper Boy," and "Joust" along with many others. It also has "Spy vs. Spy" too. BTW, if you get any irate people chasing you in Paper Boy, toss a paper at them, "use the paper as a weapon, Luke!" B-)

In other games, Doom 3D, you can bring up both feet to kick at the same time while remaining standing up. Try it, it's funny!

To the Diablo II gamers, I'm trying to figure out what combo to use in the Horadric Cube, any pointers? The Cube is also handy to store more things too.

Thanks. I'm surprised you can do it so cheap even from a chain store. I'm pricing out my soon to be new system now, looks like my flatscreen monitor will take up a huge chunk. That and the video card, like more than half the cost right there.

Splinter Cell was cool at first, but I just have no patience for stealth type games :(

I got through maybe the first quarter of it, then lost interest.  Mafia, OTH, I've played three times, Outcast six or seven and Omikron eight or ten.  Replay ability is real.

Excellent game. I played it the second time not too long ago. I managed to do all of the things right that I should have done the first time. I managed to complete many of the subquests, and that made for a much better story and a lot more action. Great game. I would have liked to be able to max out on force abilities on both light and dark, but that might take the fun out.

The Wolfenstein game you are referring to was probably "Wolfenstein 3-D"...it was really great in it's day. Last year they came out with "Return to Castle Wolfenstein"....anyone who loves these games and hasn't played that is really missing out. I was amazed at the realism and quality of "Return to Castle Wolfenstein".

Doom2 is almost endless, since zillions of new levels have been written by fans and posted on the internet. I still play Doom2 using the Doom 95 launcher. Doom 95 has better graphics!

Lots of levels have also been made for "Wolfenstein 3-D"...you can look them up. I tried it again about a year ago and it was still addicting.

Looks like the system requirements for Doom3 are going to be high. Got this off a site:

System Requirements for DOOM 3: A video card with at least 128MB RAM and Pixel Shader 1.1 support and a 2.5GHz CPU. Also DOOM 3 is expected to be on 4 cds and Multiplayer will include Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Tournament and Last Man Standing.
