Backup electrical systems failed to kick in

A mysterious power failure at Logan Airport that delayed dozens of flights for more than five hours has still not been explained – six days later.

Airport officials insist airline security was not compromised during the blackout Monday at Logan International's Terminal E, but backup electrical systems failed to kick in as they are programmed under such circumstances.

India Fire Kills at Least 80 Children

NEW DELHI (AP) -- A short circuit ignited a thatched roof and raged through a school in southern India on Friday, killing at least 80 children and injuring more than 100. The children were trapped inside a locked building, a witness said, and blackened bodies were piled two and three deep on the floor.

Police arrested the school principal, Pulavar Palanichamy, and said he would be charged with negligence leading to death, an officer said on condition of anonymity from the town of Kumbakonam in southern Tamil Nadu state, where the fire occurred.

(1010 WINS) (New York) -- A federal airport screener has been charged with stealing more than $55 thousand dollars in a ticketing scheme.

Prosecutors say 37-year-old Laura Chico-Moreira charged passengers adult fares but reporting them as lower infant prices and pocketing the difference.

Suspicious powder found aboard Delta flight at Bradley

(Windsor Locks-WTNH, July 15, 2004 Updated 9:30 PM) _ A Delta Airlines jet is the focus of an investigation after a mysterious white powder was found on board.

Delta Flight 822 from Cincinnati arrived at Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks just before 5:00.

According to airport officials, a member of the ground crew spotted a "substance" on the floor of the cargo hold and alerted authorities.

All the passengers were let off the plane and officials are now trying to determine what that powder is.

The Boeing 757 jet remains grounded until further notice.

State Police, the FBI, the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection and crews from the airport fire department responded to the situation.

Other flights and airport operations were not affected.

Just a thought. I recall the Liberty Plaza in Philly being one of the towers pictured on a jihadi forum (granny had posted it) The Plaze is surrounded by hotels and offices- downstairs are upscale shops

Well- they just put in a new food court- very large- on the second floor.One side of it is glassed in. There are TONS of people in there.

One day, I wanted to go into Liberty Plaza and use one of the phones on the second floor near GNC. Well, the plaza was not open yet, but there was a very easy way in.

The Westin Hotel backs up onto Liberty Plaza. You enter the Westin (always open early in the AM)--then you find the entrance to Liberty Plaza shopping. Once you enter- you are the only person in the entire place.

I am sure you are on camera somewhere- but I was up there alone for a good hour and no one approached me.

I wonder how many of our "establishments canteens" are like that.

If I had been a terrorist- it would have been incredibly easy to plant a timed bomb. Huge Plant containers. Huge trash collectors. Behind many of the fast food places. You could have even put it in the restroom, and hung the out-of-order sign on the door.

Washington-AP -- The American Red Cross is issuing an urgent call for blood donations, saying parts of the country have less than one day's supply.
Officials say some hospitals are postponing elective surgeries to avoid a critical shortage.

Blood shortfalls are common in summertime, when regular donors go on vacation. But the Red Cross says this year's shortage is especially bad -- and especially bad in the Northeast.

Donors with the universal blood type -- Type O-negative -- are particularly needed.

A spokeswoman says two-thirds of Red Cross regions report having less than one day's supply of O-negative blood.
