Capitola drafting beach-smoking ban
By RAMONA TURNER
Sentinel staff writer
CAPITOLA The City Council has asked staff to draft a proposal that would lead to an ordinance prohibiting smoking at Capitola Main Beach and on the wharf.
At Thursday nights council meeting, members pointed out that cigarette butts are not biodegradable and pose a significant health and environmental hazard.
"I went down to the beach on Fathers Day and saw a toddler sitting in the sand and pick up a cigarette butt and put it in their mouth," Councilman Bruce Arthur said.
Part of the ordinance could include lining the Esplanade with ashtrays, and working with owners to provide ashtrays outside Village-area restaurants.
While some council members expressed concern on how the ordinance would be enforced, Arthur said nonsmokers would help enforce it because they know the dangers of second-hand smoke.
Of course, a "realistically absurd" fine could help, too, he said.
I knew there was a reason I liked you, Gabz....
We all have our redeeming qualities, don't we???????? (Except of course the antis)
Drinking on the beach in Capitola will get you in ever deeper caca. You must like wearing bracelets.
Ah, a real local. Did you know that the only beach in the city of LA is Venice? All the South Bay cities are LA County beaches (with the exception of Hermosa, which is owned by the city).
Toke on bro'. You're just as bad as your drug addled brethren. Bong hits for dopers, pre-rolled for smokers. Let's see, if you just a one-pack-a-day man, then it's probably about time to light-up that nicotine delivery system before your nerves start twitching.
LOL!!!!!!!!!
Thankfully I'm smart enough to not live in the Sheeple's Republic of KOOKIEfornicate.
Spoken like a true believer in the all powerful nanny state.....
And considering I'm a woman, and that has been well known around here for years......you have some really serious problems - you might want to consider a therapist.
What about Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro? Is that city or county territory?
Anyway, what does this have to do with you saying that "but for the exception of Malibu/SM/Venice, every SoCal beach city is Republican"?
The elected goofballs controlling these beaches are mostly Democrats, are they not?
Who/where are these mysterious Republicans that you speak of? I thought they had all died off.
Are you a congenital idiot or were you dropped on your head as a child?
It could be that you don't belong here.
ROFLMAO!!!!!!!!!
Thanks.
I must admit, I was once part of the problem. Left my butts in the sand at the beach. Just didn't really think about it, and it seemed like a small think compared to the used condoms, syringes and tampon applicators that would wash up on the beach due to the cities of Halifax and Dartmouth's habit of dumping raw sewage straight into the ocean. I wouldn't do it now, just as I no longer chuck my butts out the car window.
It really annoys me at work - a few smokers will stand 8 ft away from the provided ashtray full of sand and throw their butts on the grass or pavement when they're done. Us smokers aren't too popular with the yuppies I work with in the first place, and that doesn't help at all.
Holey Guacamoley!!!!!!!
And I didn't even call out the cavalry!!!! You folks are AWESOME!!
Thank you all very much.
I don't believe I've encountered this particular nannystater in the past, although he supposedly has been here a while. Anyone who has encountered me here knows bloody well that I am very far from being male.
Again my thanks to you all.
Everyone makes mistakes..........it is a rare person who admits them and makes changes. You are one of them.
I have no use for smokers who won't use the provided receptacles......and no one tosses a cigarette butt out the window if I am driving. If I catch anyone doing so they better be prepared for me to stop and make him/her walk back and pick it up. (I've done it more than once)
I don't litter, it's just the way I am. My husband is the same and we are raising our daughter that way as well.
We were out fishing this evening at the pier a few miles from home. In the cooler with our drinks and dinner I also had a trash bag......our empty cans, chicken bones, and cigarette butts came home with us and did not go into the Chesapeake Bay.
That's the right way to do it. Chesapeake Bay is polluted enough already.
There is a 100 year old old oyster boat that runs out of Talbot County which gives tours. It's worth a trip. If you ever go on, you will never abide anyone who tosses anything into the Bay (not that you do now -- it will just make you even more angry).
I can't think of the name at the moment, but I have it. It runs out of a small harbor on Tighlman Island.(sp?) It's really very good.
There is a Maritime Museum there which is also very good.
And, I know of a relatively cheap rental house there.
The only thing is, you have to drive over the Bay Bridge to get there. That scares me every time. I literally have to take out tissues and put them on my hands. I can't look down. A couple beers in Annapolis first doesn't do any harm to my cause.
But, to be fair, it is not the casual litterers who are the main problem. It's the big boys. A stop needs to be put to that. I know they are working on it, but they aren't working fast enough.
Also, I read something recently about new smoking regulations in Talbot County. I can't recall the details of that either, but I believe they are now quite restrictive. Something like no smoking in any public establishment.
Coming from Santa Cruz, as I do, I used to that. Still, it's worth being aware of.
Talbot County has long had the most restrictive smoking regulations on the Eastern Shore, particularly in Easton.
I know what you mean about the Bay Bridge, I long ago gave up driving it myself. if for some reason I need to go to the Western Shore - I get someone else to do the driving. The same for the Bridge Tunnel to Virginia Beach.
"That said, cigarette smokers are slobs."
Sorry...smokers don't have te corner on "THAT" market.
If they are worried about litter...enforce the litter laws!
Just because someone smokes, doesn't mean that they are littering!
yes, I'm a smoker, but I field strip my cigarette butts or take them with me. It's not that tough.
and yes... a lot of smokers ARE slobs.
You are correct and your efforts to dispose of one's own trash are laudable.
My point is simply that smokers would find many more allies among conservatives on smoking bans (government overreach) and taxation (conservative principals) if they weren't as a group such slobs.
