Daschle concerned about 'sobering' terror briefing

SPEARFISH -- Sen. Tom Daschle, D-S.D., said Thursday that he was very concerned about homeland security issues in the face of what he called the most sobering terror report he had heard recently.

The United States is tightening security in the face of a steady stream of intelligence indicating an attack aimed at disrupting elections, the White House said Thursday.

The Department of Homeland Security is addressing the threat and has efforts underway to ''ramp up security,'' White House press secretary Scott McClellan said Thursday.

"It is absolutely essential for the U.S. Senate to turn its attention to what we can do to make America safe," Daschle said.

Of particular concern are the nation's borders and ports, Daschle said, and there are security issues unresolved as the homeland security appropriations are "hung up" in the Senate.

Asked if the timing of the terror concerns might be aimed at stealing political thunder from the announcement of John Edwards as the democratic vice presidential candidate, Daschle replied, "The report is so sobering and so serious that I cannot bring myself to believe anyone in this administration would use this for political purposes."

Daschle said the most recent terror briefing was the second this week and contained information that there is a higher threat than there has been at any time since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

I actually heard on the "objective" nightly news the reporters basically saying, "Government warns of attack before election, is it just an attempt to scare Americans for political reasons?"

There were some similiar comments in some of the news sites I was surfing during work.

How soon we forget and become complacent and cynical. Personally, I'm surprised there aren't more of these alerts.

If they do something,my bet is that they'll blow themselves up,as they do in Israel,in some HUGE mall, like MALL OF AMERICA,or whatever it's called. They also saw how well blowing up trains was in Spain;but, this is NOT Spain and there's NO reason to vote for Kerry, should something like that happen here.

Killing President Bush is nie unto impossible...they'd never get close enough, unless they tried to blow up Madison Square Garden and THAT won't happen either. The building is too low to fly a plane into,a truck bomb could NOT get anywhere near, and they'll NEVER get past security, should they attempt the Palis human bomb stuff.

Doing anything in Boston is also pretty much a nonstarter as well.THEY WANT KERRY TO WIN!

My bet is something on the left coast.

I reported one Arab posing as a South American drug dealer.

How typically racist, according to your 'logic'. It's alright for millions of illegal Mexicans to be here but you draw the line on Arabs. I wash my hands of you, keep on hiding your hypocriticl head in the sand. I want all illegals out of the country, no matter where the are from.

That message sound like one you'd hear from a bunch of kids sitting around a campfire trying to scare each other to death. Quite a chain there, too: brother of a friend of the mom of some random person posting on another board. Even the NYTimes would have trouble with that "source".

Daschole was just trying to get funding for some of his pet projects.

Let me guess, Clearly he is deeply concerned...well duh...wasn't it under his leadership and that of the president in his party that intelligence was severely cut?

if they nuked or dirty bombed Houston, there would be 2+million Houstonians with guns hunting muslims. Cops couldn't do a thing (or wouldn't).

Well, if I knew of a Mexican posing as an Arab terrorist I would report him also.

Ditto. If this terror report is correct, the seeds the administration has sown with this open border madnesss is about to blow up in their faces. And once it happens, I want heads to roll in the government.

True; however, it's still got the potential there of being more than a teen prank rumor.

I used to work in the Arco Towers in downtown LA, years ago. That area is in the heart of what one might call the financial district of LA.....tons of major banks.

"And it'd be very close to election day if they were trying to impact that."

OMG, maybe they're gonna hit Miami/Dade and West Palm Beach counties so the RATs can claim that their voters were disenfrancised, and it was Bush who engineered the attacks for his political advantage. < /sarcasm >

Well, most Houstonians would probably be dead or dying. I hope our fellow Texans would be out on the warpath for us because I don't trust the government to do it. Yes, they'll bring the fight to Afghanistan and Iraq, but when it comes to US soil, we have to be sensitive and not hurt anyone's feelings.
