Daschle concerned about 'sobering' terror briefing

SPEARFISH -- Sen. Tom Daschle, D-S.D., said Thursday that he was very concerned about homeland security issues in the face of what he called the most sobering terror report he had heard recently.

The United States is tightening security in the face of a steady stream of intelligence indicating an attack aimed at disrupting elections, the White House said Thursday.

The Department of Homeland Security is addressing the threat and has efforts underway to ''ramp up security,'' White House press secretary Scott McClellan said Thursday.

"It is absolutely essential for the U.S. Senate to turn its attention to what we can do to make America safe," Daschle said.

Of particular concern are the nation's borders and ports, Daschle said, and there are security issues unresolved as the homeland security appropriations are "hung up" in the Senate.

Asked if the timing of the terror concerns might be aimed at stealing political thunder from the announcement of John Edwards as the democratic vice presidential candidate, Daschle replied, "The report is so sobering and so serious that I cannot bring myself to believe anyone in this administration would use this for political purposes."

Daschle said the most recent terror briefing was the second this week and contained information that there is a higher threat than there has been at any time since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Of particular concern are the nation's borders

Hahaha. Since when has anyone in the government been concerned about the borders? Millions stream across it and yet nothing is ever done. When a terrorist sneaks across the border and kills thousands with God knows what type of weapon, Bush and every other politician will have blood on their hands.

What does Daschle know and when did he learn it? For future referance I'd like to know, cause he very kind of pointing a finger when he's got his hand in the pot.

The actual terror report is highly classified.

There have been articles about some potential attacks and snippets.

But I haven't heard a peep about any details about the latest ones -- must be too terrible to even contemplate, much less release any of it to the public, an dcreate mass panic.

I don't know! That's what I'm trying to find out. I didn't watch TV today, just happened to be in the room when they were saying what I wrote and I was stunned.

There would be BIG threads here, I imagine if that was the terror report.

...in the face of what he called the most sobering terror report he had heard recently.

Well ,if that's the case you can bet Kennedy didn't attend either.

"On Fox today they said it involved possible nuclear [sp?] attacks on 7 to 10 U.S. cities!!"

This was an earlier attack possibility raised. They were either mentioning it that way, or the attack possibility is surfacing again, which is quite possible.

And those trains are being redirected, during the GOP convention.

It worked in Spain, but it won't work here.

Maybe they'll try something different...a shopping mall.

But I doubt that thwey'll do anything at all during either convention, becuase that's when we would experct it and have taken all kinds of precautions.

The Senators were briefed (well the ones that showed up for the briefing anyway).

Hope you don't mind (FairOpinion and Mossad) me posting Mossad's post from the Threat Matrix thread (http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1164434/posts?page=3608#3608).....seems appropriate here, as there seems to be great interest in this topic....:

***(TAKE IT FOR WHAT IT'S WORTH)***

I really hesitated to post this, because it cannot be confirmed or denied, but it sounded odd...

I was visiting my mom tonight and she said that a good friend of hers at work told her the following:
She has a brother who works at the pentagon. He came to his sister and told her he was put on alert (my mom didnt ask what he does there) and he told his sister that she should stock up on canned food and water. He was not supposed to tell anyone, and made his sister say she wouldnt tell anyone and of course she proceeds to tell my mom.

I know, please dont jump all over me for posting this, I figured even if it wasnt true it cant hurt to hear it.

All I know is that the woman must have seemed serious enough, because my mom never pays any attention to this sort of thing and she made a stop at the store on the way home and got about 2 weeks worth of canned food and water and filled out a mail order form for 3 more months worth of medicine for my grandmother.

except they may try for the Republican Convention, to kill President Bush (and Cheney) and throw the country into chaos and make it easy for Kerry to defeat whoever the next Republican nominee may be.

That certainly would lead to major chaos. In such a scenario, who would the Republicans nominate and would the elections be held in November or delayed? I pray to God nothing happens anywhere in the country but if they are going to strike, now is a good time.

What I heard was terrible too. I need to ask Gilliam about the 'book writing guy'. Thanks for the reply.

The threat is real.

Being prepared is never a bad idea.

As they say, "hope for the best, but prepare for the worst".

The Houston ship channel.

Yes, that's been discussed as a target on FR in the past. That's another scary scenario, doubly for me as I live in the Houston area.

There is something imminent.

Tom Ridge cancels Israel visit, warns of terror attack in U.S.

Otherwise Ridge wouldn't have canceled his trip.

Canned food and water won't help anyone,if they blow up power plants or trains.

The Iranian guys, who were supposed UN security ( hahahahaha) were talking pictures of the Brooklyn Bridge and tunnels and such. But those places are heavily watched and will be long after the convention.

I really doubt the terrorists have dirty bombs/nukes.If they had them, they'd have used them already.
