France could defend EU in case of attack: minister

05 July 2004

France could use its nuclear capability to defend its neighbours, French Defence Minister Michele Alliot-Marie said in an interview Monday, while also urging European Union states to increase military spending.

She said that rogue states "could one day point their missiles toward France and its neighbours. We could say to those countries: 'Watch out, if you try to carry out your threats we will destroy you before you know what's hit you.'"

"If Germany asked us for help, it is probable that European solidarity would come into play," she told the Berliner Zeitung newspaper, and added: "For us, nuclear weapons are the ultimate protection against a threat from abroad."

She said ethnic conflict and terrorism were making the world increasingly more unstable and called on EU members to increase their military budgets to two percent of gross domestic product -- NATO's minimum recommended level.

"Today in Europe there are only three countries who spend more than 2.0 percent of GDP on defence. They are France, Britain and Greece. The others are not doing enough," Alliot-Marie said.

She said that France has a mobile, flexible and highly-motivated military and that it was the second or third best in the world.

Sure they can. The French are masters of impenetrable defenses.

They have such a brilliant record now, don't they.

"She said that France has a mobile, flexible and highly-motivated military and that it was the second or third best in the world."

I'm assuming she means the third world.

Nukes are no deterrent to terrorism, unfortunately. We have a ton, Russia has a ton and we have both been hit by terrorists.

I'm betting that if we used a few of them they would start to see the light though.

I'M SORRY - truly. No Offense was meant.

I was going to include Poland, but the darn French do happen to have Nuclear weapons. That was my ONLY reason for not including Poland.

That being said, I'd rather share (and gladly) my foxhole with a Polish Soldier than a frog ANY DAY!

(Naturally unless I wanted to surrender and I've never done that - ever, in my 55 years. I've taken some whippin's but I don't quit!)

The 45 Tongan Royal Marines who just joined us in Iraq would kick France's @$$...nukes or not. France just doesn't bother to show up.
Every time I hear France make some statement against America or the war on terror I think of my own late Grandfather who was mustard gassed in the trenches in France in WW1. He was one of the lucky ones who survived it. The arrogance and ingratitude of the French just gauls me no end! rant off/ maybe I need an attitude adjustment :o)

The worst thing in the world is to have a Frenchman protecting your back.

Now that you have apologized to Poland, how about the National Guard in about 25 states? I know the Texas Guard could whip the frogs, and I expect most of the rest of the State units could, too. With the experience the Guard is getting in Iraq, the frogs don't have a SQUAD with equal experience.

The Maginot Line, yeah that was 'brilliant' military planning on their part :-)

I think that this article has been misunderstood, France would be proud to lead the military surrender for the EU is what is obviously meant.

She said that France has a mobile, flexible and highly-motivated military and that it was the second or third best in the world.

What she really meant was that France has a military that is second best in the third world.
