FBI urges vigilance for July 4

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A constant stream of intelligence indicating that al Qaeda wants to strike the United States this summer or fall has led federal officials to urge increased vigilance during the Independence Day weekend, but there is no specific threat of an attack timed to the holiday.

I had a voter survey call a few days ago too. I couldn't get a feel for what the call's purpose was though. Mostly, the call wanted to know if I would be voting in the upcoming election. But no party line questions.

UNDERWATER explosives?

What kind of damage could UNDERWATER explosives possibly do if they are the "conventional" kind?

Wouldn't water act as a natural cushion to any potential explosion - dulling the effects of even the biggest bomb unless it was detonated right when a ship (hmmm..maybe carrying a large amount of import oil) was right over it? Even then - would an underwater bomb cause that much damage, or just make a heck of a splash at the surface?

Thinking about this just now, I had to wonder if maybe it is not a "conventional" bomb they are looking for at all - but a dirty bomb or worse?

Just speculating, but a conventional, underwater bomb doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me unless you're hunting subs - which is obviously not the case here..

Maybe all the threats of suitcase nukes has just got me thinking about that line of attack too much, but..what a statement to make to detonate a suitcase nuke around LIBERTY ISLAND - take out the statue of liberty and a big chunk of NYC and NJ while you're at it. Then again, maybe there's something more benign that isn't jumping out at me here..

The 11th. Now the sudden increase in government warnings and reports that Security has visably increased in NYC again.

If AQ's goal is kill as many people as possible, then July 11 is probaly not the date unless they plan on blowing up a stadium. Why? Because the 11th is a Sunday and weekends in NYC, particularly in the summertime, are relatively quiet and unconjested. The 15th, in contrast, is a work day, and so you can count both the locals and the millions of daily commuters as targets.

This is true, however if you wanted to maximise psychological impact, a weekend day when more people are at home and with access to a television may be preferable.

I think the fact that eom posted the message about "four days until you die" shows that he's probably reading this site and yanking our chain. It's hard to know whether any of the posts are from the original poster from pre 9/11 days.

if you were to take terrorists at their word, and accept that they are in possession of a functional nuclear device, then it wouldn't matter what day of the week it was. detonating such a device in a dense population center will kill thousands upon thousands whether it be monday, tuesday, friday, sunday or whatever.

also i agree with British chick, the psychological impact of an attack on sunday, a holy day to the nation's predominantly christian population, may be worth the reduced number of casualties. to the jihadists, this is a holy war. why not a symbolic attack upon our sabbath?

US Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge has canceled a visit to Israel that had been scheduled to take place early next week.

Extremely telling as to what may really be going on behind the scenes. Nice catch.

I've been trying to digest all posted and I think that a summary would be in order so that we can all be clear about what may occur.
1. If AQ threats bear out - Italy and England will get hit 1st, then US.
2. Three month truce period ends Jul 11-15 depending on the calendar system used.
3. The threat is for something big, devistating to hit US.
4. Gov't offical travel plans have been altered.
5. Security has been heightened in specific cities - NYC, Philly, Seattle - others?
6. The fleet and F117s are deployed.
7. Islamist chatter on the 'net warns of getting to safe areas, 30 day supplies of food/water.

I am missing details that you may have. Please fill in the blanks. Thanks.

CYPRUS POLICE ARREST 10 PAKISTAN STUDENTS

NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) — Police have arrested 10 Pakistani students suspected of belonging to an al-Qaida network on this Mediterranean island, police and media said Friday.

Cypriot Interior Minister Andreas Christou said on state-run radio that the students were awaiting deportation. He refused to comment on the al-Qaida suspicions, saying only "their arrests are connected to security considerations."

The arrests followed reports from foreign security organizations that the students were linked to Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida network, police officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The newspaper Politis reported the students had been arrested earlier this week on suspicion of belonging to an al-Qaida network.

No information was released on their identities, their length of stay in Cyprus or their alleged activities.

Sotiris Drakos, a lawyer for some of the students, told state-run radio that his clients "are innocent and have no links with terrorism."

Radio reports said one of the men already has been deported to Pakistan, while the others were being held pending deportation.

Cyprus, closely allied with the United States and Britain, has several thousand students from Asia and the Arab world.
