FBI urges vigilance for July 4

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A constant stream of intelligence indicating that al Qaeda wants to strike the United States this summer or fall has led federal officials to urge increased vigilance during the Independence Day weekend, but there is no specific threat of an attack timed to the holiday.

It took 3 or 4 years of total immersion before I understood well enough to just read and understand, and that was reading VERY slowly. Once I got to that point, it was just practice. It took me about a year to understand spoken Arabic without having to translate - that went a lot faster. The fastest way for me to translate now is to read it into a tape recorder - if it has to go through my fingers it really slows down the translations. That's why lots of time I'll post summaries rather than word for word translations.

Obviously I had a lot more opportunities to chat than read in Arabic :)

Lookee here. Saudi AQ takes credit for Anthrax, i assume, not ricin. Or was there another attack wer haven't heard about?

There was ricin found in a U.S. Senate building in early February, in the mailroom of Sen. Frist's office. If you do a Google search for ricin and Senate, or for ricin and Frist, you'll find lots of articles on it.

As to whether this latest story can be believed, I have no idea. Was it really Abu Hafs Masri that issued the statement? If so, are they really al-Qaeda? And, even if they've claimed responsibility now, did they really send the ricin?

There were also two incidents of ricin in the mail in Fall, 2003. Search for ricin and "Fallen Angel" to find articles on these. As far as I'm aware, it is not known if the ricin in the Senate was related to those two incidents, but there are suspicions that it was related. The Fallen Angel ricin was accompanied by letters indicating anger at new trucking regulations -- which sounds like a bogus reason for sending ricin, but unlikely to be a cover story that al-Qaeda would use.

I used Alif Baa, too. I agree about it being a good place to start. I found a website, too, if someone wants it, where you can do these 'vocab' type things. You print it out and do it that way...I did that b/c I can read more than I know the vocab of (and since I like languages, I did some deal they had and printed out three of the language units b/c it was a special...and found them all helpful)...

Street/shop signs were what helped, me, also...

And just keep using it. My vocab has diminished so much since I got back here in the States and have a much harder time finding people around to practice Arabic with... Then when I go back, I find how quickly it comes back. I need to get back into 'forcing' myself to keep using it here so I don't waste what I've learned...

Any good tips you've found for acquiring more vocab? That's where I still struggle.
