FBI urges vigilance for July 4

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A constant stream of intelligence indicating that al Qaeda wants to strike the United States this summer or fall has led federal officials to urge increased vigilance during the Independence Day weekend, but there is no specific threat of an attack timed to the holiday.

It seems that the potential for war is increasing as we speak.

Taiwan/China crisis update:

Taiwan Has Plan to Attack Mainland

After the "Ministry of National Defense" denied reports of US suggest to attack the Three Gorges dam, Taiwan military confirmed for the first time on July 2 that the island indeed had plan to attack the mainland in case of war.

Quoting related military officers from the "Defense Ministry", Taiwan-based China Times said that aimed at "stopping enemy at the opposite shore and countering enemy's attacks", the Taiwan military authorities had planned to use fighters, submarines and missiles to defend itself and attack enemy's transportation lines, ports and airports.

The "Defense Ministry" side that the number of CPC's conventional missiles had increased sharply from 500-odd last year to more than 600, and would reach 800 in two years. If a maximum of 150 missiles can be launched each time, then the PLA is capable of launching five waves of full-scale attacks lasting 10 hours.

While the "Red Bird" series missiles, which are under research, are also capable of striking the island precisely from 500 kilometers away.

The "Defense Ministry" reportedly invited the press on July 2 for a special briefing on military purchase budget. It pointed out that PLA had set up at least five missile brigades. Missiles deployed in Leping, Jiangxi Province pose a threat to the core area in north Taiwan, those located in Yong'an and Xianyou of Fujian Province could attack the island's central and southern areas while those in Meizhou, Guangdong Province are targeting the south of Taiwan.

The island's current defense can hardly cope with all these threats.

Regarding navy threats from PLA, local officers pointed out that the island is surrounded by international navigation routes with 600 to 900 ships, big or small, passing every day.

Since most PLA ships are equipped with satellite communication and navigation systems, they can hide themselves and move about in the Taiwan Straits.

The PLA could complete an under-water seal-off of the island as long as it could set up 12 to 16 sub patrol areas at the same time, Taiwan military decided. Meanwhile, PLA has been expanding its weaponry for all its ground, air and sea forces.

Facing the "threats from PLA", the "Defense Ministry" stressed that the most urgent task is to purchase subs, anti-sub aircraft and Patriot III.

After gaining eight submarines, the island navy will deploy them in important ports, navigation routs and key sea areas to carry out navigation blockade, sea attack, mine laying and combat of special personnel.

Iran asks Russia not to yield to US pressure over nuclear power plant deal

TEHRAN (AFX)

Iran has appealed to Russia, which is helping build its first nuclear power plant, not to yield to US pressure to abandon the multi-million dollar deal, the official news agency IRNA reported.

"In light of the good relations and expanding cooperation between Tehran and Moscow, Iran expects Russia not to yield to the US biased approach and constant political pressure," Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi said, as quoted by visiting Russian security chief Igor Ivanov.

Ivanov has held a string of meetings in Iran, which, according to Iranian press reports, have been focused on the nuclear issue -- the ongoing dispute over sharing Caspian Sea resources and the situation in the Caucasus.

Russia stands to earn 800 mln usd from building a nuclear power station at the southern Iranian city of Bushehr, but is facing a barrage of calls from Washington to abandon the lucrative deal.

The US sees Iran's atomic energy programme as a cover for the development of nuclear weapons, but Moscow has, so far, refused to ditch the contract -- credited by some as having saved its struggling atomic industry.

Instead, Russia has been pressing Iran to continue cooperation with inspectors from the UN's International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which last month criticised the Islamic republic for being less than forthcoming over its activities.

During his visit Ivanov also held two separate rounds of talks with Iranian national security chief and nuclear negotiator Hassan Rowhani, diplomatic sources said, without giving any details.

Unfreaking believable, isn't it? I hope we intend to walk softly and carry a big stick AND to trust but verify.

It truly aggravates me that we could be so STUPID. I am hoping that this headline was just for "PR"- and not an indication of what we were actually intending to do.

Incidently, I was just on homelandsecurityUS.com and they reported that Iraq has closed its border with Iran. It said "developing...."

>> Iraq has closed its border with Iran <<

Reports I've seen indicate this is being done at the request of the US gov't. I've also seen reports that Iraq might not oppose coalition strikes on Syria and Iran.

SHOW OF UNITY

Syria-Iran call for US troops to leave Iraq

TEHERAN - Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad yesterday ended a two-day surprise visit to Iran, after the two sides gave a show of unity against the presence of American troops in their common neighbour Iraq.

At the end of the trip, Iraqi officials announced the arrest of two Iranians trying to detonate a car bomb in a residential neighbourhood in eastern Baghdad, the authorities said.

Iraqi officials have blamed foreign fighters from Iran and Syria and religious extremists for a wave of vehicle bombings in recent months.

The two Iranian men had been captured in the town of Talbiyah about 19km east of Baghdad as they tried to set off a car bomb.

Officials did not elaborate on what their target was.

The arrests yesterday were the first time they actually captured any foreign fighters, according to Colonel Adnan Abdul-Rahman, an Interior Ministry spokesman.

President Assad, on his third visit to Iran since taking office in 2000, met a string of top regime officials, including supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

After a meeting with President Mohammad Khatami, the two called for the rapid departure of foreign troops from Iraq.

'This crisis was predictable, and its source was the aggression and occupation of Iraq by the United States,' Mr Khatami said.

'There is no ambiguity between us and Syria where Iraq is concerned.

'The solution is the quick end to the occupation, the installation of a government comprising all elements of the Iraqi people and the cooperation of the international community to bring stability and reconstruction,' he said.

For his part, Mr Assad said: 'Iraq is on the top of our list of preoccupations,' although he said his talks here would also cover 'Palestine and the halt in the peace process'.

'Regarding Iraq, we have always been in agreement with Iran on the need for Iraq's territorial integrity, a representative government and the departure of the occupying forces,' he added.

Both Syria and Iran have been accused by the US of supporting anti-coalition insurgents inside Iraq.

Mr Assad was accompanied by a high-level delegation, including Vice-President Abdel Halim Khaddam and Foreign Minister Faruq Al-Shara.

The Syrian President paid a short visit to Teheran in February last year on the eve of the US-led war against Iraq, after an earlier trip in January 2001.

Mr Khatami last visited Syria in May last year during a tour of Arab states. -- AP, AFP

THANKS for asking.

Pain meds still helping. Good thing. The backup dentist with mine on vacation . . . has 5 other patients from my dentist ahead of me and no openings today or tomorrow. Will see how it goes!

Thanks much.

I hope you and yours have had some fun this weekend!

My weaving is a good distraction. The loom attachment--actually bigger than the loom!--is working better than I expected. Allows me to change individual warp threads at any time and to put virtually unlimited warp length on.

Soooooo have woven 9+ yards of samples place mat size for Aunt who wants the curtains.

Have a blessed July--hot enough when swimming and cool enough when tea drinking!

Thanks for that tip, jerseygirl. I am heading over to homelandsecurityus.com next and to homelandsecurityus.net and a few other places to catch up.

So, first Iraq says that they may not oppose an attack on Syria (I think I heard that, but I can't recall where?) and now they close their border to Iran as a loud signal to Tehran to stay the heck away. Will they close the Syrian border as well? Both nations are backing insurgents. Or are we/Israel headed into Iran first?

More good things are happening in Iraq for the Iraqi people.

Any chance of a last-minute cancellation so you can get your tooth addressed sooner? I had to wait a bit for my appointment also. I asked the dental office at the time to call me if they received a cancellation and they immediately laughed and told me not to count on it! Oh well...

I had some great fun this weekend, all in all. I hope you did, too, despite your sore tooth. I know you attended your church picnic for awhile.

I don't know a thing about weaving, Quix, but what you are doing sounds real nice. What exactly is a warp thread or warp length?

CHINESE WOMAN BEATEN TO DEATH AFTER DISTRIBUTING BIBLES
Police brutality leads to public outcry, reports say

By: Stefan J. Bos
Special Correspondent, ASSIST News Service

BEIJING , CHINA  (ANS) -- A 34 year old woman has been beaten to death by police after she was arrested for handing out Bibles in southwest China’s Guizhou province, ASSIST News Service learned Monday, July 5.

The French News Agency (AFP) quoted China's state run Legal Daily newspaper as saying that police in Guizhou’s Tongzi county arrested Jiang Zongxiu, a farmer, on June 18 on suspicion of “spreading rumors and inciting to disturb social order."

They had planned to detain her for 15 days, the report said, alleging Jiang died in police custody the afternoon she was arrested.

Her mother-in-law, Tan Dewei, who was arrested with Jiang but later released, told reporters police kicked Jiang repeatedly during interrogation, AFP reported. Police later informed Jiang’s family she had died of a sudden illness and turned over her body to the family, but relatives saw she was covered with bruises and blood stains, the report alleged.

SECOND TIME

It is at least the second published killing of a Christian by Chinese police in as many months, although human rights watchdogs believe torture of Christians and dissidents is wide spread in the Communist nation.

In a letter received by ASSIST News Service (ANS) last month, Gu Xiangyan said her brother Gu Xianggao, 28, who was falsely accused of murder, had been tortured to death in April after police raided his 500-thousand strong house church movement known as "Three Grades Servants" in Heilongjiang Province, northeast China.

Like Gu, Jiang was apparently healthy before the police detention began. AFP quoted Jiang's husband and other villagers in neighboring Chongqing municipality where Jiang lived as saying that she was in good health before the arrests "and was responsible for doing most of the family's farm work."

PUBLIC OUTCRY

Chinese police officials have refused to comment on the case. An operator manning the phones at the Guizhou police station said she was "not aware of the incident", AFP reported. The unprecedented report on the attack by state media is seen as a sign of public disgust with police tactics and China's continuing crackdown on religious practitioners.

In recent weeks more than 100 evangelical leaders are known to have been detained, and recently the Vatican expressed concern over the whereabouts of several bishops. Besides church leaders even Bible owners are targeted and several of them have reportedly been send to labor camps for "re-education."

Bibles are banned from book stores and are not easy to obtain, AFP reported from China. Human rights organizations say the Communist authorities have recently given a "secret directive" to police forces to crackdown on the rapidly growing underground churches, also known as the house church movement, which the government sees as a threat to the Communist ideology and Atheism.

Only observing religion in state churches is allowed. Despite the difficulties, China is experiencing the largest church growth in the world, analysts say.

That is based on the Abu Hafs Masri Brigade Roadmap. I have just finished the full translation.

The portion that is relevant is here:

Excuses and a warning:

1. To the people of Europe: You only have a few more days to accept Bin Laden’s truce or you will only have yourselves to blame.

2. You (Muslims) in the West should depart to Muslim states if they can. Those who cannot should take precautions and live in Muslim areas, have enough food to last a month, find ways to protect themselves and their families, leave enough money in the house to last one month or longer and to pray a lot and put their fate in God’s hands.

3. To those who care about civilization: There are only a few days remaining to accept the truce offered by Sheikh Osama, and then the race now is between you, time and European governments which refused to stop their attacks against Muslims. So do not blame us for what will happen, and we apologise to you in advance if you are among those killed

Yeah, talked about cancellations. But doesn't sound promising--a waiting list already even for tomorrow--and that's with my Dentist's patients on top of the substitute's regulars! Whee.

The warp threads are the length-wise threads. Normally, when a loom is warped, setup, the length is limited by how much the warp beam can take wound around it. My attachment is a whole different strategy and allows, if wanted, even 100's of yards as well as the ability to change a warp thread at will at any time. Normally, one would have to just start over if one didn't like the warp thread arrangement, colors etc.

It's a good therapeutic hobby. Lets me see a product! Talking to people toward changing life long habits is not always a good way to see progress--especially with alcoholism or character disorders etc.

Hope your tooth is fixed or well on the way toward it! My mouth is mostly root canals at this point! LOL.

What were your feelings about us being attacked this holiday? Did they change at any point? What about the rest of July?

Do you think we'll avoid WWII this year?

Blessings,

Iraqi group criticizes al-Zarqawi's insurgency tactics, threats to kill him

By TAREK EL-TABLAWY

BAGHDAD (AP) - A group of armed, masked Iraqi men threatened Tuesday to kill Jordanian militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi if he does not immediately leave the country, accusing him of murdering innocent Iraqis and defiling the Muslim religion.

In a videotape sent to the al-Arabiya television station, a group calling itself the "Salvation Movement," questioned how al-Zarqawi could use Islam to justify the killing of innocent civilians, the targeting of government officials and the kidnapping and beheading of foreigners.

"He must leave Iraq immediately, he and his followers and everyone who gives shelter to him and his criminal actions," said a man on the video.

There was no way of telling whether those in the videotape were actual insurgents themselves or supporters of the U.S.-backed interim Iraqi government. The video marked the first time that an Iraqi group has made such a public threat against al-Zarqawi.

Meanwhile, a car bomb exploded in the town of Khalis near the city of Baqouba, 55 kilometres northeast of Baghdad on Tuesday, reportedly killing 13 people attending a wake for the victims of a previous attack.

The attack occurred two days after gunmen fired at a building belonging to a city council official, killing two people and wounding two.

"So far, we've received five of the dead," said Dr. Nasser Jawad Kadhim, the head of the morgue at Baqouba General Hospital. "Thirty-five of the injured have been hospitalized."

Another hospital official said 13 people had been killed.

The threat against al-Zarqawi was issued a day after U.S.-led coalition forces, who have been targeting al-Zarqawi, launched an air strike in the restive city of Fallujah on a suspected safe house used by his followers. The attack reportedly killed 15 people, a dozen of them children, witnesses said.

In the video threat against al-Zarqawi, three men, their faces covered with Arab headscarves, were flanked by rocket propelled grenades and an Iraqi flag. The man speaking had a clear Iraqi accent.

"We swear to Allah that we have started preparing . . . to capture him and his allies or kill them and present them as gift to our people." the man said. "This is the last warning. If you don't stop, we will do to you what the coalition forces have failed to do."

Al-Zarqawi, said to be connected to al-Qaida, is believed to be behind a series of co-ordinated attacks on police and security forces that killed 100 people only days before U.S. forces handed over power to Iraq's interim government.

His followers have also claimed responsibility for the beheading of American businessman Nicholas Berg and South Korean translator Kim Sun-il.

The attacks have led to fears that religious zealots and loyalists of deposed president Saddam Hussein may be joining forces to fight both the multinational force and the new Iraqi government, increasing violence that has racked the country since the U.S.-led invasion toppled Saddam 14 months ago.

In other developments Tuesday, the U.S.

military announced that three U.S. marines assigned to the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force were killed while on duty in western Iraq. Two died in action Monday in Anbar province, while a third died of his wounds later Monday.

In the town of Latifiya, 40 kilometres south of Baghdad, two police officers were seriously injured Tuesday when gunmen opened fire on their patrol car before fleeing, said police Lt. Hazim Abdul-Kadhim.

In the town of Yayieji, about 30 kilometres southwest of the northern city of Kirkuk, a roadside bomb exploded, just missing an Iraqi police car, but severely injuring a bystander, according to Col. Sarhat Qadir from the Kirkuk police force.

In Baghdad, the U.S. military said Tuesday that troops had fired on a car that failed to heed warnings to stop at a checkpoint, killing one child and wounding a second.

NATO officials met Tuesday with Iraqi Defence Minister Hazem Shaalan as part of a fact-finding mission to carve out a possible future role for the alliance in the country.

On Monday, U.S forces dropped two tonnes of bombs on a purported militant safe house in Fallujah, killing 15 members of one family, according to witnesses, and turning the building into a nine-metre-deep pit of sand and rubble.

Yasser Abed, 17, said 15 members of his family, including 12 children, were killed in the air strike. Abed, his father and a brother were out of the house at the time of the attack, he said. Hospital officials said at least 10 people were killed. Previous U.S. air strikes in Fallujah have killed dozens.

Interim Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi issued an unprecedented statement saying his government provided intelligence for the location of the al-Zarqawi safe house so the strike could "terminate those terrorists, whose booby-trapped cars and explosive belts have harvested the souls of innocent Iraqis without discrimination, destroying Iraqi schools, hospitals and police stations."
