Grit corruption eclipsed by Tory gaffes
Calgary Sun ^ | June 29, 2004 | Licia Corbella

This election SHOULD have been about three things: Corruption, corruption and corruption.

Alas, moronic Conservatives -- and that particularly includes Alberta Premier Ralph Klein -- made sure that the anger Canadian voters were feeling about the Liberal government was eclipsed by their fear of -- say it now: "The Conservatives' Hidden Agenda."

Essentially, Liberal corruption won yesterday.

As one gleeful e-mail writer, who signed his name only as Little Jake ('cause he doesn't have the cojones to sign his name to his opinions) crowed, "Canadians prefer outright crooks to the hidden agenda of the right-wing loonies."

Bingo!

Hopefully, that will teach the Cheryl Gallants, the Randy Whites, the Frank Luellaus and the Scott Reids of the Conservative Party once and for all to either shut up or get out of politics.

Hopefully, it will also teach the moron who wrote that press release that Paul Martin is in favour of child pornography to hang up his or her political adviser's shingle.

These people have proven that they don't understand politics and what it takes to win.

Yesterday, Calgary Wild Rose MP Myron Thompson asked rhetorically: "What will it take?"

After all, the last 11 years of Liberal rule were the most corrupt in the history of this country and hard-working tax-paying Canadians were furious at the Liberals.

The answer, Myron? Discipline and a lack of the "scary" stuff from people within your own party.

Yes, corruption won.

So, too, to did distortion and lies.

We can all look forward to negative election campaigns in the future.

Clearly they work as the Liberals have used them successfully this time and in 2000 as well.

But let's not paint too bleak a picture.

As Jim Prentice, who won Calgary North said at the Roundup Centre last night, the Conservatives did remarkably well when you consider how things looked just six short months ago when the Alliance and the Progressive Conservatives were fighting each other rather than the corrupt Liberals.

"Just half a year ago when we were splitting the vote, this election was going to be the 'Paul Martin juggernaut' -- a massive majority government," said Prentice.

Now, instead, we have very left-wing government made up of a minority Liberal government propped up by a swooning and heady New Democratic Party.

So after 11 years of Liberals promising to deliver a national day-care program, we will at long last get one.

I wonder how many billions of dollars will disappear into Liberal pockets with that enormous boondoggle?

When Liberal Leader Paul Martin declared during the leaders' debate that he "could have swept the sponsorship scandal under the carpet," now he can.

Liberals who feared they were heading for jail are undoubtedly clicking their heels together in glee today.

Sure there will be a judicial inquiry, but people will be less forthcoming with a dictatorial, vindictive Liberal in the PMO.

Nevertheless, while a Conservative majority would have been the best scenario for everyone in this country (including for those who fear them) the worst scenario would have been a Conservative minority government. Let me explain.

Had Stephen Harper's Conservatives won a minority government, their chances of winning a majority in the subsequent election, that will come earlier rather than later, would have been slim.

Why?

Because Canadians would have viewed the Conservatives as ineffective, unable to deliver on any but the most obscure of their election promises and certainly unable to bring down a budget.

Also, as Calgary Ald. Craig Burrows predicted, last night's results mark the end of Martin.

"I think we're still going to see some infighting in the Liberal party and Paul Martin will be destroyed within two years."

But as Calgary Nose-Hill MP Diane Ablonczy said: "I think many in our party are going to have to do some soul searching as to why they got off topic."

So what's the topic? It's corruption, stupids.

I watched your elections on the CBC and am amazed that anyone in Canada votes at all. I thought American politics were a mess but I stand corrected.

BTW does the CBC allways declare a winner at 10:28 PM?

Yep, they usually do so after every other network has called it. CTV called it by about 10pm.

I can hardly wait for the logrolling on National Child Care between the Reds, the Redders, and the Reddest.

The War on Children is an essential part of making Canada dumber.

I am waaaay dyspeptic this AM!

I'm Glad you can stomach the CBC. I can't. It's clear to me that Ontario prefers OUTRIGHT CORRUPTION. Unless and until there is proportional representation in this Country there is NO point in voting, you are most correct. I, being from B.C. would separate in a moment. I DON'T even wish to be associated with what RULES this Country. I actually feel sick today.

The CBC is the only Canadian channel i get here in Michigan. You might want to point out to your liberal countrymen that we didn't boo your national anthem at Michigan International Speedway though.

Take heart you still have friends and defenders here in the states.

heads, I did my part against that nonsense, man. A few of us went to all the debates and made nuisances of ourselves for Liberal scumbags to try to make them lose their tempers.

I went to a Women's Issues All Candidates forum for the three London-area riding. I was so sick of the audience inviting and eating up their idiotic claptrap about "children and the environment" "the environment and children".

I thought, Let's make these idiots choose BETWEEN children and the environment. Totally deadpan:

"My question is for Joe Fontana of the Liberal Party. Your party proposes a 6 billion dollar government child care program. Yet, having a child is one of the most environmentally destructive choices a person can make. A new life is far more ecologically destructive than a new SUV. Your program will provide an incentive for more people to have more children, thus harming our environment. So my question for you is, Which comes first -- the environment? Or -- Children?"

My cohorts (who were also prepared with Lib-harassing questions and performed admirably) said Fontana's face FELL and it was priceless. He flipped out ;-)

You might say I was castigated in response ;-)

"HAVE SOME RESPECT!!!"

Another funny part was the Green organizer who came up to me later -- "Ooo, a lot of us agree with your question (sic) but if you phrase it like that it turns people right off."

I played dumb and got her to say some rather mounds-o'-skulls things...

Way to go, jodo!

Isn't it odd the way all of these 'socially progressive' ideas start out with the shining eyes of youthful idealists and students, and end with the blank, staring eyes of corpses in ditches?

I should make an art movie. ;^)
