Canadian Election--6/28 Live Thread
Various | 6/28/04 | Free Republic

Posted on 06/28/2004 2:51:25 AM PDT by conservative in nyc

The Canadian election is today. If the most recent polls are correct, the Conservative Party of Canada may win more seats in Canada's House of Commons, setting the stage for a Conservative minority government. A new day may be dawning in Canada. But the election is going to be close.

Please use this thread for any early election articles that pop-up over the course of the day, predictions and news analysis, and, of course, the actual results as they come in.

Also, please post links to Canadian elections result sites here.

To all right-minded Candians on FR (double entendre intended), you have my condolences.

To all lurking Canadian left-wingers, enjoy your new hell.

What's the chances of the west getting fed up enough to finally allow Quebec to go independent? Wouldn't that tick off Ontario, which might bring the best result of all, a 3 way split of Canada resulting in a conservative West country? Its not like we care how many seats the left would gain in the UN..

Alberta joining the US, I wouldn't mind, but I read an article maybe a decade ago, I think in the WSJ, saying that the maritime provinces should join the US if Quebec seceded.

No freaking way.

Better yet would have been to preemptively attack and to set the agenda. The Tories ought have been loudly proclaiming what is good about Christian beliefs, gun rights, friendship with the US and UK, etc. By setting the stage and defining all of this, when the Left counterattacked, the Right could have labelled them traitors, Jihad lovers, Communists and all sorts of negative things. Instead, the Tories took the high road and had to respond to the initial volley, and when they did, they got called Fascists and wackos. First strike wins.

Elections have not been kind to conservatives anywhere this year. I hope W can buck the trend.

This is nutty. In Australia the Australian Labor Party Left together with Australian Democrats and Greens can't get something like 55% of the popular vote!

Perish the thought... but they just might. Depends on what happens between now and the election here...

Ooooh, holy dog poop!'

NDP will exact a high price, however.

I hope you all fare better in your elections then we just did in ours. I don't know if I can stand even one more year of the Liberals.

This leader of the NDP takes basically every position opposite of the US. If he wields any sort of power in the new government, there will be no thaw in the US/Canada relationship.

The NDP wants two things: PR so they can expand their power at the expense of the Liberals and more spending. My thinking is the Liberals will accomodate them on the latter and try to hold them off on PR right up til the next election.
