Update:

IRAQ HANDOVER 'TODAY'

The handover of power in Iraq is to be brought forward to today.

A formal announcement will be made later today, Tony Blair said.

The informal announcement was made by Iraq's foreign minister Hoshyar Zebari.

The handover of power to an interim Iraqi government was supposed to take place on June 30.

Mr Zebari said the deteriorating security situation in the country was one of the reasons why the date had been brought forward.

"We will challenge these elements in Iraq, the anti-democratic elements, by even bringing the handover of sovereignty before June 30 as a sign we are ready for it," he said.

He added: "We have made some very good progress in terms of the new security council (in Iraq) and the return of sovereignty to the Iraqi people to take away the level of occupation we have suffered a great deal from.

"There are many Iraqis who are standing up to the challenge. We are here to seek more help and assistance, training and equipment."

BTW, doesn't this handover mean that Iraq intelligence agencies now have discretion on whatever 'interrogation techniques' they choose to employ? Might come in handy in dealing with the incidents so many expect to occur in the next few days and weeks.

Ooooooh myyyyyy! Slick move!! WOOOOHOOOOO!

There's no telling how this is going to play out in the days and weeks to come but I can't help but say I like it.
Prayers strong for the U.S. and Coalition troops right now. And for Allawi. I haven't forgotten Zarqawi's threat to him.

I'd planned on getting a decent night's sleep tonight but NO WAY now. LOL!!!

Iraq Handover Brought Forward to Monday - Source

7 minutes ago Add Top Stories - Reuters to My Yahoo!

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - The formal handover of sovereignty to an interim Iraqi government has been brought forward two days to Monday, a coalition source said.

The U.S.-led coalition had initially been expected to hand over to an interim Iraqi government on June 30.

In Istanbul, Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshiyar Zebari confirmed there were plans to bring the handover forward.

"I believe that we will challenge these terrorists, criminals, Saddamists and anti-democratic forces by bringing even the date of the handover forward," Zebari told reporters after meeting British Prime Minister Tony Blair (news - web sites).

A diplomatic source at the NATO (news - web sites) summit in Turkey, which Blair is attending, also told Reuters the handover could take place "as soon as today."
