The Green Party nominated Texas attorney David Cobb as its candidate for president Saturday, dealing a blow to independent Ralph Nader's campaign.
Nader, the party's candidate in 1996 and 2000, had hoped for the party's endorsement and access to the ballot Greens have in 22 states and Washington, D.C. Instead, he will have to find another way to get on the ballot in those states, including Wisconsin and California.
CBS News Senior Political Editor Dotty Lynch says the development is sure to make Democrats smile, since they're convinced Nader would take more votes from presumptive nominee John Kerry than from President Bush in November.
Nader told party officials months ago he would not accept the party's nomination for president, openly courting their formal endorsement instead.

Democrat party conspiracy
This is an unwelcome surprise. Won't he still be able to get on the ballot in most states by having voters sign petitions? I know I'd turn out with a few of my friends to sign it for him :)
Who cares who they vote for as long as it is not Kerry.
We lost a lot of elections because of the losertarians.
It only takes a few thousand votes.
What is a losertarian?
Nader was the BEST thing going for the Greens, whatever that is.
I agree which makes me wonder what offer Kerry made them.
Tree-hugger ping.
Ahhhh okay I thought that's what it meant. thanks!
I think I will take your advice and sign a petition too!
Who knows, it means one more name on the ballot. Maybe it will be too long again for the brainiacs of parts of Jacksonville, Palm Beach County and other similar Dim strongholds .......
Well!
This could actually be better news for the Republicans if Nader can get on the ballot as an Independent in some swing states. It splits another way with the name "Green Party" and Nader separate.
