STRIKE OPERATIONS AGAINST THE ZARQAWI NETWORK
BAGHDAD, Iraq - Statement by BG Mark Kimmitt, Deputy Director for Coalition Operations
Today, Coalition forces conducted another strike on a known Zarqawi network safe house in southeastern Fallujah, based on multiple confirmations of Iraqi and Coalition intelligence.
This operation employed precision weapons to target and destroy the safe house and underscores the Coalition's continuing resolve, in partnership with the Iraqi Security Forces, to defeat and destroy terrorist networks within Iraq.
Wherever and whenever we find elements of the Zarqawi network, we will attack them.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MOSQUES IN SADR CITY CALL FOR CALM
BAGHDAD, Iraq - Mosques throughout Sadr City called for a cessation of attacks against Coalition forces June 24.
The message, broadcast over mosques' public address systems, addressed insurgent fighters affiliated with Muqtada al-Sadr and Sadr City's general populace.
Col. Robert Abrams, commander of the 1st Cavalry Division's 1st Brigade Combat Team, called the announcement a positive sign. He said Coalition forces will continue to protect key infrastructure and government buildings in the area, as well as train and integrate Iraqi Police, Force Protection Services and the Iraqi National Guard.
"We will continue to strive to bring essential services to the people of Sadr City," he said. "The announcement by the mosques is definitely a step in the right direction."

Two mini-CENTCOM releases.
Re. 'Sadr City' and Col. Robert "Abe" Abrams, commander of the 1st Cavalry Division's 1st Brigade Combat Team:
Thanks, mark502inf!
"The youngest son of General Creighton Abrams, former Chief of Staff of the Army. In WWII, Creighton was know as Patton's favorite tank commander--led his battalion from the front and leaning out of his always-open hatch, chomping a cigar as he attacked from Normandy all the way across Germany into Czechoslavakia, to include breaking through to the 101st when they were surrounded at Bastogne.
Rob Abrams is in a different war, but serving his country just like his dad. A great American family."

Musab al Zarqawi and his hotheads by killing Shiites, have doomed their insurgency. There is no way they can take over the country except by killing every Shiite and Kurd in it. The Al-Qaeda branch in Iraq signed its own death warrant.

... I've been fearful that Iraq will be soon engulfed in civil war. I'm comforted that Iraq will no longer be a threat to this nation...

You are correct. The ONLY way that an insurgency is successful is by gaining POPULAR support.
This will not happen in Iraq. In the not too distant future President Bush and all those who saw this through will be vindicated.

President Bush and all those who saw this through will be vindicated. OK, but if I got my panties in a bunch following the Kay report, and took a few weeks to recover ( I DID recover) I call I am still vindicated :-)

Hard to have a popular uprising if you're not popular. Also hard to start a civil war if you don't have the support of your own side.

Fortunately our son is home on leave while the handover happens. It was a great father's day for me. He came home last Tuesday morning. He'll be here for two weeks.
Also the North Carolina House and Senate paid a tremendous tribute to him this past Wednesday. The Senate leader actually asked him to address that chamber from the floor. In the House he received a roaring applause with chants when he was introduced. Many of the lawmakers have been keeping track of my son through me and my work at the legislature.

That is very good news!
Please tell your son thanks from this grateful civilian, and let him know how proud we are, and tell him we're keeping him and his fellow Soldiers in prayer.
Thank you for raising him up right, cavdad.
